Spelling out what TIF could mean for Huntley

Last December, the Village of Huntley approved a study to determine whether or not to designate downtown Huntley a tax increment financing district. The study will examine costs, risks, and feasibility of the process and will give village officials the information to decide whether or not to go through with the plan. The eventual goal for downtown Huntley is to attract new investment by renovating and redeveloping some of the older buildings.

Can senior volleyballers jump?

White men can’t jump – remember the Hollywood movie that tried to prove that point? Can Sun City seniors jump? Yes, they can. A member of the community’s Senior Volleyball League proved it the other day. During a match at the Cosman Center gym, he slammed the ball into the opponent’s court for a winner and exclaimed, “Hey, my left foot was all the way off the floor!”

Tips for Avoiding Scams

Recent scam: You receive a phone call or email from a person pretending to be your grandchild or a friend. This person states they are traveling in a foreign country and have been robbed or injured. They ask you to wire money to help them get home. Do not send money. Check with someone you know who will be able to confirm the wellbeing of this person.

The cure for primary fever: Thinking locally

For the last several months, we’ve all been overrun with talk, news articles, meetings, campaign telephone calls, and the like touting the presidential primary elections. Who is in the lead in the Republican Party? That is very important, but apparently not something that Sun City residents will have much effect upon. Illinois is the 31st state to hold a primary election or a party caucus. By March 20, the Presidential candidate issue will likely be pretty well decided.

Current Events January 31 meeting summary

A number of subjects in the news were discussed. The first was a consideration of the Steve Chapman column of the preceding Sunday’s Chicago Tribune. Chapman focused on whether the legal drop-out age should be increased to 18, as proposed by President Obama and Governor Quinn. Chapman targeted the negative consequences of forcing children who would otherwise drop out to stay in school.

In Woodstock, Illinois, there is more behind the groundhog than merely his shadow. Although the town has annually celebrated its “Groundhog Days” event for the past two decades, this year means something more. To mark the 20th anniversary of filming the movie “Groundhog Day,” which took place in Woodstock, the week-long celebration, starting January 29, will be its biggest yet.

Popular local music group Project 2 serenades Sun City

On January 10, Sun City had the pleasure of being serenaded by an amazing group of performers titled Project 2. This group is comprised of 15 Huntley High School students and was created by Dylan Ladd in 2007. The students sing and dance musical numbers from such grand performances as “The Jersey Boys,” “Mamma Mia,” and “Wicked.”

Husband remembers wife with those who remained by her side

Hanson donates salary to food pantry

On December 16, Huntley Village Trustee Nick Hanson donated $1,000 to the Grafton Township Food Pantry. The money was part of a total $4,000 donation to be paid out in $1,000 increments.

Sports clubs hibernate in winter? Not in Sun City

A neighbor of mine asked me recently if all Sun City sports groups “hibernated,” or canceled activities, during the winter. He assumed that clubs such as softball, tennis, bocce ball, biking, and anglers took the winter off, hunkered down to survive the winter storms and cold, and waited, perhaps impatiently, for spring.
