In the Sound of Music, where’s the abbey? Or a staircase with seven charming children singing goodnight to party guests? In Some Like it Hot, where is the mysterious cabaret? Or a train car? In Brigadoon, where are the landscapes symbolizing Scottish moors? In Fiddler on the Roof, where are the rooftops?

As the 2010-2011 flu season approaches, it’s once again time to think about getting a flu vaccination. Because the Center for Disease Control recommends that just about everyone over age 6 months gets the flu vaccine this year, it lends to people asking some of the following questions:
Jim Roberts, born March 12, 1941, passed peacefully at home on September 29, 2010, in Huntley, IL. Husband 47 years to Pamela; father to Suzanne (Steve) Cox and Kathleen Anne Roberts; Brother to William (Debbie) Roberts and Thomas (Jeannette) Roberts; Grandfather to Arthur, Brandon and Robin Cox; and Brother-in-law to James (Kay) Pung.
My buddy Bill and I are fraternity brothers of sorts, as we both marched in the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps as drummers. Bill likes to play golf and sent me this “moment” about himself:
Sun City’s Pickleball Club completed its 2010 outdoor season in September with a three-part tournament involving doubles teams. A double-elimination playoff was held in three categories: men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles.
As has been the case at other participating libraries, the Huntley Area Public Library has seen brisk use of its free Museum Adventure Passes.
In two days, Sun City will go to the dogs, literally. Pampered pooches and coddled kitties will be dressed up in their best, or maybe funniest, costumes, depending on the creative talents of their owners. They will be the center of attention at an expo, and they will be ogled, petted, admired, and not yelled at for four hours.
With the approaching production of Rogers and Hammerstein’s Carousel, it’s business as usual for the Theatre Company of Sun City. And when each show’s production consists of thousands of man hours and managing fiscal responsibilities, the Theatre Company of Sun City operates very much like a business, a not so small one at that.
Alternative fitness programs are more popular and are becoming more a regular part of a balanced health and wellness regiment these days. One of the longest running and most popular of these alternative programs is the practice of Yoga. The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word yuj, meaning to yoke or bind, and is often interpreted as “union” or a method of discipline.

Let’s start this week’s column off with this anonymous one about an 83-year-old woman who was stopped for speeding. When asked by the patrol officer, “Did you know you were speeding?” she talked herself out of a ticket by stating: “Yes, Officer … I was trying to get there before I forgot where I was going!” Makes perfect sense to me.
Prior to July 29th 2009, our Grandaughter, Hope Fuller, was a normal, beautiful, active, 12-year-old little girl. This was the day she was diagnosed with Difuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a tumor located in the brainstem and inoperable.

Lights, camera, action! When six Sun City Stingrays arrived at their second summer swim meet held in Homewood, Il on Tuesday, August 24, they were greeted by a WGN television reporter, microphone held in his hand, and by his accompanying WGN camera lady.
Whoever said art needs to hang on walls? Why not in a garden? This is just what you’ll find 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday, September 18, at the Art Show in My Secret Garden, where the Sun City Pencil & Pallet Club will display their original fine art at the Gardens of Woodstock.
In 2007, after nearly a 30-year hiatus from his tenor sax, Frank Ardito of N. 30 picked up his instrument to get back into the swing of things. He bought a new case and had his sax reconditioned and started performing again and loved every minute of it. Then doctors diagnosed Ardito with an aggressive form of stomach cancer, and once again, he had to put down his music.
Henry Fransen got a strange phone call a couple of weeks ago, and the person that called was about to give him an opportunity that he would remember forever. Henry and his friend, Fritz Mazuer, both WWII Marianne Corp. Veterans, and members of the Sun City Marine Corp. Group, wrote over a year ago to a company called The Honor Flight Chicago Group, letting them know that they would be interested in finding out more information about what the group was about. They never got any response until a few weeks ago.

Among the hundreds of softball players in the Sun City Softball League, there are many of exceptional talent who have played on prominent championship teams. Some of them have won distinguished individual awards.

America is the nation where you are promised “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Many of us have what we need to be happy. But others have come upon hard times and have little—little money, food, shelter, or clothing.
There are numerous reasons why people walk: for exercise, to relax, for transportation (the most basic of reasons, of course), or, at 8 a.m. Saturday, September 25, at St. Catherine of Sienna in West Dundee, people will walk for the poor.
Eight members of Sun City’s Stingrays’ Swim Club annihilated their competition at this summer’s Park Ridge Six County Senior Olympics held on July 22. A total of 27 medals, 10 gold, 13 silver, and 4 bronze, were earned by the Stingrays present. All competition is judged in five-year age increments.
Lesley Cowles believes in creditability, reliability, and good customer service. With this formula, her home-based business, The Balloon Cottage, has gone “sky high” in sales. It’s a business that she considers an unexpected gift.
It’s that time of year again. Kids everywhere are heading back to school, toting a backpack full of fresh supplies. With McHenry County College’s RAP Program, so are many adults 50 and older. Only with MCC’s RAP Program, it is with the ease of a no-pressure, test-free atmosphere, where adults 55 and older may “Rediscover the joy of learning through active participation with like-minded peers.”
Phyllis and Dan Witt of N. 22 are extremely proud of their grandson, Erik Franzen. Erik, who is 28 years old, received his Bachelors Degree in both Journalism and Spanish while attended Carthage College in Wisconsin and received a Master’s Degree in Social Work at Aurora University in Il. What makes Erik unique, though, is that his education and passion for helping people have been stepping stones for what he is about to embark on for the next 27 months.
