A little powwow about political correctness

The other day, I was writing a sentence in which I used the term “Indian style” to describe a way someone sat. I haven’t used the term in years. Then a little voice inside my head said, Wait a minute, Chris. You may want to go online and check this out, because things have changed since you were a boy. ‘Indian style’ may be offensive nowadays.

Village entertains idea of hotel development

In the past 18 years, the Village of Huntley has expanded its business and industrial base in many ways – foreign-owned and domestic manufacturing and warehousing facilities, shopping centers, restaurants and boutiques, educational facilities, medical and healthcare centers, banks, and a Walmart. And of course, the Midwest’s largest active adult community, Sun City.

Seven simple steps towards heart health

In 2010, the American Heart Association introduced “Life’s Simple Seven,” which were steps the public could take to reduce their risk of developing heart disease. A new study informs us that over the span of 11 years, people who met three or four of the heart health steps had a 55% lower risk of cardiac mortality than those who adhered to two or fewer of the criteria.

Potential retail development edges closer to Sun City borders

Additional details of a proposed large retail development immediately south of two Sun City neighborhoods are starting to emerge.

Taking time to see the moon and other miracles

As the full moon rose just after sunset a few weeks ago, I stared at it and wondered: “What if the moon happened only once? What if, in the deep black immenseness of the night sky, this pale beautiful face appeared only once, and this was the night that it happened?”

Rutland controversy continues to simmer

Acrimony and controversies continue to dominate Rutland Township.

Most of it involves township finances, accounting, and financial reporting practices. The factionalized board manages to carry out most functions in spite of, rather than because of, the differences among the elected officials.

Electronic Personal Assistants: Caveat Emptor

We’ve all heard the shocking news stories:

• Approximately one billion user accounts have been stolen from Yahoo, the company confirmed. The data breach is the largest from a single site in history.

Did I see the Oscars?

The answer is NO. I preferred not to listen to the political rhetoric that would surely surface, and decided that re-runs of Everybody Loves Raymond were a better choice, which proves that every now and then I can make a good decision.

Ask an Angel: March 9, 2017

My father has dementia and I’ve noticed that he gets more confused and agitated in the evening. His sleep has also been affected. Why does he change so drastically?

False advertising! But that’s just fine

When you go to a Kentucky Fried Chicken Restaurant you expect chicken. When you go to a Burger King Restaurant you expect burgers. When you go to a Hooter’s Restaurant you expect … er, maybe that’s not a good example, never mind.

A Chicago friend recommended this book, a combination biography, mystery, newspaper story, myth-buster. The author was 6 when his young, Chicago newspaper-man father died late one night of a heart attack, after work, after visiting friends in 1970.

Ask the Woodchucks: March 9, 2017

I am a new Del Webb resident and just read your article today on the Moen faucet warranty. In the article, you refer to the warranty for the windows in our homes here. I do not recall reading that article and would love to know about this warranty, and even what kind of windows are in our homes. Would you be so kind as to provide me with this information?

Huntley construction projects get the green light

Three Village of Huntley construction projects for 2017 will be especially significant for Sun City residents.

Goodnight, iPhone

Many of us are guilty of it.

Going to bed, but not really going to bed; there’s always that last-minute check on your phone or tablet, whether it’s to browse Facebook, check an email, or scan the news headlines one more time. And it never ends well.

Disconnect in Rutland heats up elections

In Rutland Township, the challenges and controversies seem endless.

Recalling the name of the famous you-know-who

I just opened my email, and the first message at the top of the list was for a brain strengthener that is “Proven to double your IQ.”

Well, that could be useful. As a writer, it would be nice to be smart enough to be able to spell IQ correctly.

2017 focuses on interior renovations for Sun City

In 2016, Sun City officials focused their maintenance efforts on exterior facilities – Prairie Lodge’s rear waterfall, Wildflower Lake and Park, and the retaining wall near Meadow View Lodge’s main entrance.

It’s healthy snack time!

Most of us engaged in big-time snack eating throughout the recent exciting Super Bowl football game. The question remains: Did we control the calories and nutrition level of what we devoured?

Such a title begs investigation. Which book matters most? By whose judgment? The story, according to the inside flap, involves a woman whose 25 year marriage has fallen apart who joins a book club to meet new people.

Size does matter

Cosmetic companies have very clever ways of enticing customers to buy their products. Several times a year they offer a “Bag O’ Free Stuff” if you purchase a certain amount from their make-up technicians that look like nurses. One Saturday during their “Bonus Time,” Nancy decided to stock up on her war paint.

Ask the Woodchucks: Door Closer Adjustment

The door to the garage on a Del Webb home is supposed to close by itself. Over time the springs on the hinges no longer work as they should. Is there any way to tighten these hinges or must one or more of them be replaced?

Ask an Angel: February 23, 2017

How is dementia different from Alzheimer’s? Aren’t they the same thing?

A river runs through it

Want to get away, but not too far? Try the Quad Cities (actually 5 towns now make up the Quads: Davenport and Bettendorf, IA, Rock Island, Moline and East Moline, IL). A short 21/2 hour drive by interstate and you’re on the Mississippi. We were there recently and took in the activities.

Social media is a popular way to keep up with friends and relatives, near and far. But while sharing photos and status updates and other information is a fun way to keep in touch on sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, the Huntley Police Department reminds residents to be mindful about the information you post online.

Sometimes the movie is better than the book

When it comes to books and movies, most people (who read) generally agree the “book is better than the movie.” That’s because it’s amazingly difficult to trim an 80,000-110,000-word novel down to a 90-120-page screenplay without losing the story’s oomph. And while I generally subscribe to the idea that books are better than their big-screen adaptations, I’ve found it’s not always the case.

Rutland controversy comes to a close

On December 30, Margaret Sanders, an 18-year Sun Citian, was charged with violating a state election regulation about her nominating petition for public office.

How to outsmart common computer repair scams

In the last six months, we have had a steady flow of members come into the computer club reporting that they have been the victim of a computer scam. In this scam, they receive a phone call or they get a pop-up on the computer screen telling you that a problem has been detected, and they should call the number they display.
