Election ballot overview: what you need to know

Rutland Township’s leadership group has been lively in recent months, and the April 4 election of officers will reflect that.

Just a little taste of truthiness in a factish world

I had an interesting post-factual encounter the other day. You’ve probably heard the term “post-factual” recently. After all, we just came through a whole slew of the most fact-challenged election campaigns in history.

Moen faucets

We told you about the manufacturer’s warranty on the windows in your house but did you know that if you have Moen faucets they are also warranted? Moen has a lifetime warranty on their faucets to the original owner, and not just in senior communities.

A Winter Island Getaway

The winter doldrums are in full swing. Jack Frost is nipping at your nose, and Nancy and I are nipping at each other due to a bad case of “Cabin Fever.” Before we bite each other’s heads off, we decided to try a little island getaway at the Bahama Breeze Island Grill in Schaumburg.

Ask an Angel: February 9, 2017

The recent events in our world have made me very suspicious about so many things. I hear about scams and wonder if there are things seniors should be aware of in our community.

This title made me think of my brother’s dining room table spread full with 50 years’ worth of family pictures. He, too, wonders about some unidentified people as does a character in this novel.

Sun City resident takes aim at domestic violence in the workplace

While sitting in the break room, a co-worker confides in you that she is being beaten at home by her boyfriend. Even worse, he may show up at her job, and she is scared.

Here’s what you can do while waiting for the chip reader

What did we do with all of our free time before the advent of the chip reader? Those extra thirty seconds of wait time while the machine reads the chip in your debit or credit card can seem endless.

Controversy surrounds leadership in Rutland

This is the first of two Sun Day reports on a leadership controversy in Rutland Township, which is located in Kane County. Nearly two-thirds of Sun City (the southern section) is located in Rutland, which is one of 16 townships in the county.

911 locator light switch

My neighbor’s porch and exterior garage lights won’t turn off (the emergency flasher is not engaged). Ace Hardware said they’ve had a number of requests for replacement switches, but can’t help.

We’ll be back right after these soul-searching messages

Plato said: “Know thyself.” Socrates said it, too. So did Aeschylus. And although those guys were a few graduation classes ahead of me, I always believed they were talking about me when they said it.

Because I always thought I knew myself.

Visiting your doctor as your own best patient advocate

As we age, office visits to our health providers will inevitably become more numerous. With today’s average of 15-20 minutes allotted for doctor visits, it behooves us to become our own best patient advocates.

Hidden Figures and The Man Who Knew Infinity – two tremendous stories

As of this writing Hidden Figures is number one in box office receipts over the past several weeks. Deservedly so.

Wainscott fills vacant seat on board, O’Leary reelcted as president

Sun City’s board of directors filled a vacancy in its ranks, appointed its 2017 officers, and appointed liaisons to nine advisory and support committees and councils in its organizational meeting on January 11.

Next time a snowstorm heads our way, get this hefty book for your days inside. It’s not about a lawyer, but if you grew up in Chicago or are interested in contemporary history and/or in the history of the print journalism, this might be just for you.

Docked for brunch in a friendly port

If you’ve lived in the Northwest Suburbs for any length of time, you probably know of the Port Edward Restaurant in Algonquin. This has been a landmark in the community for 53 years and counting.

Donations warm more than the heart

Willowcreek Huntley members and Sun City residents (right to left) Jacque Johnson, Ken Stumpf, Chad Johnson, and Nancy Stumpf prepare the 392 new children’s coats,110 pairs of gloves and 41 hats collected by Willowcreek Huntley to donate to Grafton Food Pantry.

...

I am recently widowed and I am realizing that I just can’t do things as easily as I once could do. I want to retain my independence, but with so many scams in the world, I am skeptical about asking for outside help.

Fight or Flight

On December 1, Delta Airlines announced that it is resuming flights to Havana, Cuba, as part of the thawing of relations between the United States and its close Caribbean neighbor.

What does this have to do with anything in Sun City?

It is the final chapter in a story that started for a Sun City resident in 1984.

And this is why I don’t talk to strangers

Shortly before my son was born, it really sank in that my wife and I were going to be his primary role models for a number of years (and hopefully someone he bounces things off for the rest of our lives). The insight made me take stock of myself. I’ve done this before for numerous reasons, and it’s always an uncomfortable process, but unlike other times, I knew this time someone was going to be learning from me. Certain changes had to be made.

Woodchucks build, donate prayer boxes to local hospital

Sun City Woodchuck member Bill Ziletti was contacted in August, 2016 by Justin Searles (chaplain at the new Centegra Huntley Hospital) to see if the Woodchucks would be interested in building prayer boxes for the new hospital. Bill met with Justin to discuss the design and review the pictures of the current boxes.

‘Twas the season to go MIA with a TIA

The first hint of trouble came as I got out of bed the day after Christmas at 6:30 a.m. I stumbled because I had gone all weenie-legged on the right side.

“Well, that’s strange,” I thought. “Must have slept funny.” I flippered off to the bathroom.

Gratitude is an attitude that can continue to make us happy

Chuck Swindoll, an 82-year-old Evangelical Christian pastor and author of 70 self-help books, is also a radio and audio preacher who gives people, especially seniors, insight for living daily with difficult situations. Here is one of Swindoll’s outstanding poems to help guide us through life under situations that we wish were different.

With the correct attitude, you can still be in control of your happiness!

La La Land – a musical treat & Passengers – first class adventure

Our publication schedule precluded writing about these on a timely basis, but nonetheless, it’s rare that I see two films in a row I can actually recommend. It’s possible by now you’ve seen these; if not catch them while you can.

Everybody loves a Bimbo…

A surefire indicator of success is when you have a namesake restaurant. There is Harry Caray’s, Wolfgang Puck’s, and Wendy’s, just to name a few. I couldn’t wait to tell Nancy she had achieved this great honor when I discovered Bimbo’s Italian Restaurant in McHenry. Note to all males, don’t do this, it will not end well…
