Coffee talk

Being a writer, I’m always on the hunt for creative inspiration. Being a latte-loving writer, I’m always at a coffee shop listening to what I hear going on around me, whether I want to or not.

New developments on the rise for seniors

The love affair between Huntley and the retirement, senior living, and hospital industries seems to have no end.

This is a book I went looking for since I heard the author interviewed on NPR. The main character is diabetic, which has nothing do to with the plot; he simply thought it would be interesting to give her this attribute.

Don’t just stand there, plant something, Part II

There are documented health benefits from gardening. Can you give us a few examples?

Happy When I’m Dancing

The Hoofers, Hunks, and the newly added “Hunkettes” group are getting ready for their annual show.

Sully – run, don’t walk

Director Clint Eastwood had me stymied for a bit as this movie began. The story starts out a little slow; not what I expected. But the man is a genius, give him his due, and just at the right moment, BAM, he launches the sequence of 208 seconds that will live forever in the annals of twenty first century heroics.

ALI – ALI – ANO’S

One Saturday night, Jim and I realized that we had a couple of restaurant reviews in que. This allowed us a rare opportunity to have a leisurely date night at one of our favorite Italian restaurants and be “off the clock” for a change.

Sincerely yours

As a young woman, Marion Matthews left home and began working at her first job, about 30 miles from her hometown. It was just far away enough to feel homesick.

“It was before you could call long distance,” she remembers. “I had to write my parents a letter during the week! We did a lot of letter-writing back then.”

Quotes from a first-time pregnant woman, Part II

The following are quotes from my wife, who is pregnant for the first time. The quotes are not labeled by week, but they do run in chronological order from just days after we found out she was pregnant to present day at 27 weeks along.

In remembrance of Sargent Marak

Sgt. Leonard (LJ) Marak was Sun City’s special cop.

2016 Sun City 9/11 American Flag Memorial

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, and Sun City will honor each of the 2,976 victims with the placement of one American flag as part of its 9/11 Memorial. Following is the program agenda.

Retire from work, not life

“Retire from work, not life,” was the mantra at Sun City when the community was filling up with residents.

Many Sun Citians left jobs and careers behind, and embraced social activities, recreation, and volunteerism. But that wasn’t true of all of us.

An early morning walk out where the sidewalk ends

I took a walk this morning out where the sidewalk ends.

Ask any city kid how to get to the end of the sidewalk, and he will thumb his nose at you, because any city kid knows that the sidewalk has no end.

Huntley High School parking problem comes to a halt

A long-range solution to the issue of student parking on Sun City streets will be a reality later this month.

Here are an abundance of health tips (AARP Magazine June/July 2016) to help you survive Huntley’s late summer Dog Days.

Bocce Ball’s Best of 2016

The 2016 Summer Olympics are over, but the thrill of competition is alive and well in the Sun City Bocce Ball Club.

A homestyle ‘Heritage House’

Jim’s grandparents emigrated from Bremerhaven, Germany. When Okoberfest draws near, this old man’s fancy turns to thoughts of Sauerbraten and Sauerkraut. Being the ever-vigilant food critics who anticipate our readers’ needs, we wanted to celebrate early so that you won’t miss out on this artery clogging festival.

Don’t just stand there, plant something

I called my husband last Thursday afternoon and vented about a pattern of behavior that I had noticed in our son. While our son is innately the most caring, kind, and funny person I know (except his father of course), he had developed a pattern of behavior that needed to be addressed.

Ask an Angel: September 8, 2016

My sister and I disagree on how to care for mom. She lives out of state, and I am here, and involved in her day-to-day care. Since the care falls on my shoulders most of the time, I find myself feeling overwhelmed and resentful.

Hang Your Hat: September 8, 2016

Letters for the week of September 8.

Fix a Leaky Sillcock

The hose faucet in the garage leaks and leaves water puddles on the garage floor. Is there any easy way to fix it or do I have to call a plumber?

Check These Out: September 8, 2016

As previously mentioned, the Huntley Library has hundreds of cookbooks. This one, from the NEW shelf, caught my eye because of the colorful cover, its Sports Illustrated connection, plus a mixture of simple recipes with short, interesting ballpark factoids.

Acting superb in The Light Between Oceans but movie fails to shine

To begin, kudos to Casting Directors Nikki Barrett and Francine Maisler for gathering together a superb cast. The movie stars two-time Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender, Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), and Oscar winner Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardner), all of whom lived up to their reputations.
