MY SUN DAY NEWS
By the time you read this, many of you will already be familiar with the latest digital gaming craze. Maybe you’ll have heard about it from the news, or from the grandkids, or the internet. Or maybe you’ll have caught a few Pikachus yourselves.
August 8 marks the 14th anniversary of the annual National Night Out that Sun City will be participating in with the help of the Neighborhood Watch and Neighbors Helping Neighbors.
My previous H&W Column discussed “SAFETY FROM SUMMER BUGS!” The topic’s last sentence related Ben Franklin’s quote, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!” Apparently, even yours truly wasn’t adhering to our great statesman’s words of caution when I, for the past 6 to 7 weeks, walked 3 days weekly with 2 to 3 friends on the edge of the inside path by Wildflower Lake, frequently brushing along the high weeds growing there.
It’s tough to be a cop these days, no matter how far or close you are to the front lines. What does this mean for local police officers, closer to home? The Sun Day asked this question to Chief Robert Porter, Deputy Chiefs Todd Fulton and Michael Klunk, and Officer Megan Racial.
It’s never comfortable standing in a long checkout line, but this one was more uncomfortable than most.
Letters for the week of July 28.
If you like action galore, sensational special and visual effects, and an enduring story line, this movie is for you.
It’s been quiet around the Fountainview Amphitheater lately, but all that’s about to end when Sun City’s own classic rock band, OLD’S COOL, takes the stage next Thursday, August 4, from 6-7:30 pm.
For most people, going to a courthouse ranks right up there with getting a colonoscopy or having a root canal. Fortunately, the Woodstock Courthouse has been transformed and the lower portion is now a restaurant called the Public House of Woodstock.
My once vibrant husband has been showing increased signs of memory loss. I am heartbroken, and sometimes feel guilty because my patience wears thin, especially when he repeats the same questions. How can I deal with the repetitive behavior calmly?
There is photocell at the bottom of your garage door to protect your grandchildren from being hit by a closing garage door. Whenever you actuate the garage door opener to close your garage door, a small light mounted on the track about four inches from the floor turns on and shines across the door opening toward a photocell mounted on the track on the opposite side at the same height. If something blocks the light from hitting the photocell, the door opener immediately stops.
Six thousand, five hundred, and seventy days have passed with only 28 more to go. The questions creep into my mind at all hours of the day and night. They range from the somewhat inconsequential in today’s society, (‘Does she know how to iron?’) to the abstract (‘How will our family structure be affected as we all feel the loss?’), to the very serious, (‘Have I emphasized strongly enough that she needs to guard her drink at social events?’).

For the second straight year, there will be no competition in the 2016 Sun City board of directors election.
Sun Citians have probably been wondering when, or if, that former Del Webb administration building on Farm Hill Road, which has been vacant for almost eight years, will be revitalized or torn down. Well, it’s coming back, as a multi-faceted office building.
Helen Hays likes to tell people her birthday is “Christmas in July,” better known as July 25. This year, Hays turns 99; she’ll celebrate with a family gathering, but she knows she’ll have a little celebration with her friends from her Bridge Club, too.
What makes conspiracy theories so darn interesting is that there’s always a kernel of truth in them. Cases always make sense to a point, and then the math fails and things don’t add up, leaving everyone searching for that damning link that probably isn’t there. I’ve come to learn that exactly how long a woman is pregnant is exactly like that. A good conspiracy theory. It keeps you guessing and counting. And nothing ever adds up.

The Sun City Theater Company will be taking the stage again this summer with their upcoming performance of “’Til Beth do us Part.”
It was a few minutes past two in the afternoon when the smoke alarm went off. And then the next alarm, and the next, until all five alarms in the house were screaming. I leaped to my feet and almost stepped on the dog, who was also leaping to her feet at the time. She looked at me with an accusatory glance, as if all the noise was my fault. But I knew better.

Sun City’s Board of Directors held another discussion July 7 about the problems at the Wildflower Lake shoreline, and they came closer to making a decision on what to do about them.
This is a story about one of Sun City’s biggest controversies, which is now ending on a positive note. This issue is also playing a major role in the launching of one of the most significant new initiatives in the community’s governance history.

Summer annually brings warnings for Americans to be vigilant of bugs that can bite and cause harmful consequences to their victims. This year’s newest villain is the mosquito spreading the Zika virus in South and Central America.
Since 2002 Sun City, Huntley, under the sponsorship and direction of the Neighborhood Watch/Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NW/NHN) Committee, has participated in National Night Out (NNO) and is proud to again be part of this effort, our 14th year.
Letters for the week of July 14.
It is important to use a variety of animal repellent products. What works in someone else’s yard, may not work in yours. What works in your yard for a while, may stop working if the rabbits get used to it.
On the NEW bookshelves is a non-fiction item that appeals to me because it has (as you can tell from the title) many pictures and not too much text. I used to tell my high school students that an easy way to keep up with current events, so as not to appear totally ignorant, was to browse through a weekly news magazine and look at the pictures, and read the captions.
We’ve all seen multiple pictures of the various wonders of China, but visiting and seeing it for yourself is different; the “touch and feel” makes it a definite lasting memory.
The plating on the door handles on several of the doors in my house has worn off and they look bad. It is worst on the outside of the room. I would like to take the new looking ones on the inside of the closet doors and swap them with the worn ones, but I don’t know how to do this.
