From sojourns to soup making

For several hours a week, I work at the Huntley Library re-shelving items. During this process, opportunity presents itself for me to peruse materials I’d not see while looking on my own. Very often I say to myself, oh, that looks interesting … and then I keep it or jot down the info. I’ll share some with you that pique my interest.

HCR gives thanks for success and staff

Thanksgiving is coming – Thursday, November 26. The fourth Thursday in November, to be exact. It’s defined as a time for giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and the preceding year. Well, most of us don’t have a “harvest,” but we at Huntley Community Radio give thanks for the preceding year and the start-up years.

Continuation of alternative approach to cancer

Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size; however prolonged therapy will not reduce the size. Instead, toxins will build up in the system, and one can succumb to various complications and infections. Because the immune system is compromised, often year later, cancer will spread to other parts of the body. Surgery can also cause the cancer to spread.

It’s a Jeep thing

Sun City residents tool around the community in sedans, SUVs, RVs, golf carts, three-wheel bikes, and regular bikes. Occasionally they follow grandchildren who ride around on roller blades or scooters. But have you ever seen any resident driving a 63-year-old U.S. Army jeep like the ones used in the Korean Conflict? It looks like it just came off the assembly line, because it’s been restored and rebuilt by a Sun City resident and his friends at a Hampshire auto dealership.

When Sun City resident Joyce Zemba taught at St. Philomena’s grade school in Chicago in the late 1960s, it seemed unlikely that any of her students would be able to stand out. “I taught a class of 49 sixth graders and they were a handful,” said Zemba, who was a nun and educator forfourth, fifth, and sixth graders. Despite this, sixth grader Guido Lavorata managed to stay on Zemba’s radar.

Sun City Board cuts off communication with Sun Day

For the Sun Day PERSONALLY, the board’s unwillingness to communicate is of very little consequence. It will not negatively impact the paper’s performance. October tricks and treats: website woes and wonderful volunteers

Halloween is still going to be October 31, but October 24 is TRICK OR TREAT TIME FOR SUN CITY. So be ready when your doorbell rings and little Munchkins say “trick or treat.” It happens from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday. And then, the best part: after 3 p.m. and it’s done, you eat the leftovers.
