Hang Your Hat: December 10, 2015

Letters for the week of December 10.

Land of the rising yum

Remember all those science fiction movies where the monster Gyoza tramples the Japanese city of Kyoto? No? Maybe it was the monster Godzilla trampling the city of Tokyo…Oh well, whatever it was, Gyoza is an appetizer and Kyoto Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar is a restaurant in Crystal Lake.

Ask an Angel: December 10, 2015

I completely overdid it during Thanksgiving. I over ate and felt horrible for days. I want to stay healthy and my doctor has instructed me to stay healthy as well. Any tips to gain self-control?

The Huntley Community Radio holiday playlist

Hope your Thanksgiving was great. Now we’re looking forward to the holiday season – Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, and New Years. It’s a very exciting time with shopping for gifts, baking special treats, and visiting friends and family.

Spotlight shines with Oscar-winning potential

In January 2002, the Boston Globe published a blockbuster story detailing the massive scandal of child molestation and cover up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, shaking the entire Catholic Church to its core. Spotlight is the story of the five newspaper reporters who brought this to fruition.

Ask the Woodchucks: December 10, 2015

We live in a Pulte-built house that is now almost ten years old. When we open the windows, there is a strip of white plastic hanging down under the window. It looks like the weather stripping is coming apart.

The Stingrays Do the Turkey Trot

With the memory of five Stingray Swim Club members having successfully completed September’s O’Hare Airport’s New Runway 5K Run/Walk, Stingray Nancy Cihlar felt motivated to initiate the club’s new event: a Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot. Thus, a new way of moving was begun for the swimmers!

Queen Mum

There is no sign of Kay Harlow slowing down. And that’s saying something, since the Sun City resident recently joined the centenarian club.

A moment of silence for the victims of Paris terrorist attacks

Like most of the world, I watched the events unfold in Paris with grief and horror.

Hang Your Hat: November 19, 2015

Letters for the week of November 19.

Resident seeks answers about budget

I’ve emailed the SCCAH Board on 11/2/15 and again on 11/5/15, hoping they would acknowledge and answer my four questions to our residence and therein avoid publishing this letter in the Sun Day, but they have not responded.

The road ahead for Sun City’s gatehouse

Sun City’s gatehouse may have a brighter, more colorful future.

Wi-Finally

New and expanded Wi-Fi is coming to Prairie Lodge.

Holiday health & nutrition, part 1

With my last two articles on the subject of microbes, I thought that I would issue a warning about those many food buffets that you will soon be exposed to during the holidays. Left out too long on the serving table or exposed to contamination during the preparation process, those delicious dishes might just make you and your relatives or friends very sick during the holidays!

Sammie and the Good Samaritan

When Edwin Lezniakand his dog, Sammie, stepped out for their routine walk through Neighborhood 12, the two didn’t know there was a buzz of danger in the air. Soon afterward, the pair was in trouble; Sammie had been stung by a wasp and couldn’t continue walking the several blocks home.

Déjà vu all over again

People often ask us if we will ever run out of restaurants to review. We don’t think so, and let us explain why. The very first restaurant we reviewed two and one half years ago was “A Touch of Italy” in McHenry. Unfortunately, they are no longer in business. That seems to be the fate of some of the establishments that we favorably reviewed. Coincidence? Hmmmm…

Spectre: Another 007 Triumph

This is the twenty-fourth James Bond movie – is it the last? We’ll see. Daniel Craig appears for the fourth time as agent 007, and, as usual, gives us a great performance. I thought his best was Skyfall, but this one is not far behind. As I have stated before, Sean Connery is a legend from his Bond movies, but Daniel Craig is the best ever.

Cruising Around Alaska

North to Alaska, North, the rush is on…

Avoiding the inevitable SNAFU when PDA meets NRA

You send your kids off to school every morning with a hug and a kiss, hopeful and trusting that they will get through the day without being assaulted by some sociopath in the hallways.

From sojourns to soup making

For several hours a week, I work at the Huntley Library re-shelving items. During this process, opportunity presents itself for me to peruse materials I’d not see while looking on my own. Very often I say to myself, oh, that looks interesting … and then I keep it or jot down the info. I’ll share some with you that pique my interest.

The importance of plant hydration in winter

I am not quite sure if we are correctly curing all that ails them, but a recent study from the Harvard School of Public Health reported more than half of children in the United States are not getting adequate hydration. Are our plants?

Ask an Angel: November 19, 2015

Our Ask An Angel correspondent is Arlene Petersen, Life Care Navigation Specialist in the area of senior home care. Q. I recently visited a friend who was babysitting her grandchild. The visit was wonderful, but her grandchild was obviously sick with a cold. How do I handle the upcoming cold and flu season when I …

HCR gives thanks for success and staff

Thanksgiving is coming – Thursday, November 26. The fourth Thursday in November, to be exact. It’s defined as a time for giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and the preceding year. Well, most of us don’t have a “harvest,” but we at Huntley Community Radio give thanks for the preceding year and the start-up years.

Continuation of alternative approach to cancer

Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size; however prolonged therapy will not reduce the size. Instead, toxins will build up in the system, and one can succumb to various complications and infections. Because the immune system is compromised, often year later, cancer will spread to other parts of the body. Surgery can also cause the cancer to spread.

Ask the Woodchucks: November 19, 2015

Can you tell me how to pull down the cover of the overhead exhaust fan/light in the commode area of the master bathroom? It should be simple, but am afraid I might break it. It needs a lightbulb replacement.

Sun City Veteran reveals details of his career

Jerry McClellan wanted to be an astronaut. He studied science and engineering, graduated at the top of his class in high school, got a college degree in physics, joined the Air Force, and became a pilot. Next stop, space, right? Well…no.

Sun Day responds to Loughran’s letter

After reading Executive Director Deanna Loughran’s letter to residents in regards to the issues between the board, the Sun Day, and Dwight Esau, there are really only two items worth responding to.

#OptOutside: Why I agree with REI’s Black Friday decision

With Halloween over, what’s the next holiday to which we can look forward? (Spoiler: Thanksgiving is the day before it). Oh, that’s right – Black Friday. Because what is a better way to conclude a day of being thankful than focusing on what you don’t have? One large retail chain might have the answer.
