Ask an Angel: July 30, 2015

My father is on several medications. How can I make sure any new prescriptions work properly with his current medications?

Seeking a heartbeat in a world of robot overlords

It happened at the grocery store the other day as I stood at the end of a long checkout line. And it happened last week when I went into the bank.

Shower door dilemnas

I own a 2004 Pulte Adler model home. The original shower stall track and sliding doors can no longer be effectively cleaned. I would like to replace the shower doors with the exact same shower door kit, brand, or model. I cannot find the brand name anywhere. Is the brand name somewhere on the track or sliding doors or do you know the brand?

Green thumbs are also for turning pages

We are in the middle of the wonderful part of the year with our children. Summer means hanging out with the neighborhood kids, groups outings, staying up a bit late and sleeping in even later, seasonal jobs, and no homework except the perfunctory one book report due the first day of school.

Healing Our Toxic Bodies: A Review as To Why We Are Toxic

We have spent the past seven weeks learning about what makes our bodies toxic. This toxicity often makes us feel miserable and leads to numerous disease and early death. Some of the reasons are processed and overly-cooked food, larger portions than we need at mealtime, stuffing ourselves between meals, and pesticides in our food, air and water.

Ant Man: a giant surprise

Frankly I was at a loss about which movie to report on for this edition. My editors crack the whip on deadlines, eliminating any hope of Mission Impossible, which will most likely be my next column. One of my neighbors said “well there is always Minions,” (I’d rather resign).

The New National Night Out

Can Sun City’s National Night Out be the largest gathering ever in the community’s history?

Turning my back on Facebook…again

I’ve decided to quit Facebook (again). I know I’ve said this before, and I know it sounds like breaking up with a significant other or quitting an addiction, and in many ways, it is.

Outsourcing Sun City finances proves a challenge

Outsourcing Sun City’s financial reporting and processing has proven to be a challenge for the community’s staff managers.

On the beach at Omaha

“We cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract.”

Abraham Lincoln enshrined these eloquent words into our minds and hearts when he dedicated the Gettysburg battlefield to history more than 150 years ago.

The fabulous flying Uno

Most of us here in Del Webb have a bucket list, and this is the story of one man’s quest to check off yet another item. While sitting in our screened in porch, Jim noticed a small plane flying overhead, towing a glider. He remarked that it would be cool to add flying in a glider to his bucket list.

Old’s Cool to return to Pub 47 on July 19

After their house-rocking show at Pub 47’s Grand Opening weekend on June 14, everyone in the house thought it would be a good idea to do have Old’s Cool do it again—and maybe again and again.

The Dreaded “C” Word, part 3

You probably have heard in recent decades that cancer has been linked with certain viruses. That is true.

Board drops to six members for remainder of 2015

The 2015 Sun City board of directors election may be one of the most interesting and exciting ever.

A late-blooming superhero reveals his Power of Stupid

Someone once said, “Knowledge is power,” but what little knowledge I possess can’t hold a candle to my newly discovered “Power of Stupid.”

Reel Time Extra: Looking at John Grisham films

John Grisham is one of the most prolific and popular authors of our time, his books to date have sold over 300 million copies, and he cranks out a new one every year or so. Most of his fans appreciate his exciting and sometimes mysterious plots and his adherence to detail. Some of us appreciate the fact that profanity and sex do not rear their ugly heads in his stories.

Washing machine hoses

The leading cause of water damage in most residences is failure of the flexible rubber hoses that connect the washing machine to the hot and cold water. These hoses become brittle over time and only have a useful life of about seven years.

Rain, rain go away, come back another day

For the Fourth of July holiday, my children Sarah and Christopher and I flew down to Texas. We try to carve out some family time each summer, and this time it was in conjunction with witnessing my cousin receiving a prestigious award from NASA, visiting with many friends and, of course, a college visit to Texas A & M University.

Do you know the UK?

When you hear someone says “United Kingdom” or “UK” what do you think it means? Most people think the phrase is only limited to England, but that’s not true. It also includes Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The UK almost lost Scotland recently, but the populous voted to retain the status quo.

Rustling up some real Texas BBQ

Right on the heels of the popular Food Network TV Show, “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” otherwise known as “Triple D,” we would like to present to you our version. This “Five D” review (Dining Duo’s Diners, Drive-In’s and Dives) will be on the Texan Bar-B-Q in Algonquin.

Ask an Angel: July 16, 2015

My husband and I need to get our legal matters in order. We know we have to get a power of attorney in place for each of us. I’ve heard there are two kinds: one for our finances and one for our health. What is the difference?

Are you ‘on fleek?’ No? Well that’s just peachy, neither am I

I was on the phone with Sun Day advertising representative Kurt Kuehnert the other day, discussing a client’s ad copy, and he said, “They want either red, white, or blue.” He immediately interrupted himself with, “Wait, that’s wrong. They want red, white, or blue….” Can you see the difference? Let’s clarify it.
