Huntley’s July 4 fireworks show has found a new home in Deicke Park.

Something To “Wine” About

How time flies when you’re having fun. This is our second anniversary writing for the Sun Day News. To celebrate this momentous occasion, we decided to spruce ourselves up, splurge a little, and go to the Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant in South Barrington’s Arboretum shopping complex.

Ask an Angel: July 2, 2015

My neighbor received a phone call from her grandson and it turned out to be a scam phone call. She couldn’t hear the caller very well, so she wound up hanging up. I can only imagine what the outcome could have been. What can we do to prevent being scammed?

Door Problems Resolved

Last week I opened the “inside” garage door to our house and heard a loud pop.  It sounded like a balloon burst. Now the door doesn’t close by itself. There are two large cylinder type hinges on this door.  Are these spring-loaded? Did one or both of them snap? How do I go about getting the door fixed?

You know you really want to — and now you probably should!

How many times do you have to catch them in a lie before you stop listening to them?

Hang Your Hat: July 2, 2015

Letters for the week of July 2.

Gardening Q&A

The wealth of gardening knowledge and experiences in the Sun City community is vast and varied. Each and every day we all have the privilege to enjoy the beautiful plants that are in individual’s yards and the common areas.

Inside Out: Another Disney/Pixar magical production

First things first, the little heroine in this movie is named Riley, and I have a fourteen year old Granddaughter with the same name. So, to my Riley, this review is dedicated to you. Love, Poppa.

Assessing the toxicity of our individual bodies

On each item give yourself a 1, 2, 3 or 4, being as honest with yourself as you can. When you finish, add up your score for the total. The higher the score, the least toxic you are.

From Rombas to Sun City: A story of connections

Many international and cross-cultural marriages and families began despite the difficulties of war. Men and women who never imagined a future thousands of miles from home reached across the differences of culture and the chasms of distance and connected with each other in a new global community. None of these relationships, however, was achieved quite like those among Margot Hoeffler of Rombas, France, and Americans Walter Sormane and George Kays.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Introverts

The other day, when I was browsing the Internet instead of sleeping, I came across a quote on a blog that goes like this: “Every introvert alive knows the exquisite pleasure of stepping from the clamor of a party into the bathroom and closing the door.” (Sophia Dembling). Boom.

Ground breaker

To Craig Culver, the success of any business enterprise is the people who work in it. At a ground-breaking ceremony on June 12 at the site of a new Huntley restaurant that will bear his name, he demonstrated his point dramatically.

Penny Flooring Just Makes Cents

When Chad Radtke moved his State Farm office to the west side of Highway 47, he did not know that it would be more than a business pursuit, but a creative one as well.

Vets Roll

Police escorts are generally saved for very important individuals, such as the president, certain celebrities, or foreign dignitaries. However, from May 17-20, a group of 200 veterans received police escorts as they traveled from Wisconsin to Washington, D.C., and even throughout the Capitol area.

The dreaded “C” word, part 1

The two leading causes of death by disease in the United States are cancer and heart disease. Together, they accounted for nearly half of all deaths in 2008, the latest year for which data was available, according to a Center for Disease Control (CDC) report. Med Page Today tells us that while heart disease was first with 25% of all deaths, cancer was second with 23% that year.

The faces behind the airwaves

How does the station get on the air? It isn’t by magic! I’d like to introduce you to our four engineer-volunteers who make it happen.

Rhodes Resigns

Eugene Rhodes has resigned from full-time service on the Sun City Community Association board of directors, a role to which he was elected for a two-year term last year.

Love & Mercy, a Beach Boys triumph of a different kind

If you are a member of the “Greatest Generation,” and many of you reading this are, the Beach Boys music is indelibly locked in your memory. Ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as the twelfth greatest band ever, and with sales of over 100 million records, how could we forget?

A Grade “A” Diner

As you drive on Route 20 heading west from Route 47, you will come to a fork in the road. This is where you will see a diner with a giant letter “A” on the roof. No, this is not Arnold’s from the TV show Happy Days, instead it is Allen’s Corner Diner in Hampshire.

More foods to avoid

Eggs (Commercial) Nutritious eggs, free of disease, are probably the most difficult to buy. One reason is all the terms on the cartons. Some of these are organic, cage free, free range, omega 3s, etc. What we want to avoid are buying eggs that come from caged chickens. While ones bought in grocery stores at …

Ask an Angel: June 18, 2015

I’ve fallen for the first time recently and it really scared me. Since this happened to me, my friends have told me to expect it to happen again. Is this true or am I just being too worried?

Ask the Woodchucks: June 18, 2015

New federal guidelines for home water heaters took effect in April. The heaters will now be larger than the existing models. Will they fit into Sun City homes that have no basement, or will the homeowners have to modify or rebuild their space?

Make way for the Monarch

Childhood memories can be deceiving. We might remember events slightly different than how they actually occurred or we might only remember bits and pieces of events. Sometimes touchstone moments bring clarity or intensity to a memory so that it is forever with us.

The way it should have been is just the way it was

Even if you’re not a fan of soccer—or of women’s sports in general—now that the Women’s World Cup is in the news again there’s no avoiding memories of that iconic photo of US soccer star Brandi Chastain on her knees, fists clenched, arms raised, mouth open in a joyous roar of celebration after scoring the winning penalty kick against China to capture the cup on July 10, 1999, in front of more than 90,000 stadium fans, and perhaps a billion more worldwide.

Hang Your Hat: June 18, 2015

Letters for the week of June 18.

Bumpy ride

None of them knew or expected that, in the next few minutes, their routine, peaceful day would turn into chaos, injury, and controversy. It began as a routine doctor visit, and ended up with an elderly man in a hospital and a physician in handcuffs in a police vehicle.

A game of shadows

The window was always there. He knew the window was there (it wasn’t covered by a dresser or armoire or even veiled behind a curtain for ages), and he saw it every day. But one day, he saw it differently. How a stranger might view it.

District 158 renovations set to update educational facilities

That huge addition going at Huntley High School next to Sun City is a lot more than just more space, bricks, and mortar.
