MY SUN DAY NEWS
The next monthly meeting of the Huntley-Elgin area Ostomy Support Group will 2-3 p.m. Wednesday, December 10.
Ushering in the sounds of the season, the Sun City Prairie Singers are set to perform their annual holiday concert this December, complete with standard classics and new twists.
I was in my early 20s, working as a manager in a restaurant, when I first heard the concept “perceiving is believing” or said differently “perception is reality.” It was part of our management training booklet, in a section that discussed quality of service. Although the concept was new to me and had its appeal, I, forever the idealist, sort of rejected it because there’s always an impregnable truth.
So you don’t want to develop those annoying flu symptoms (fever, sore throat, muscle aches, cough, runny or stuffy nose) that can spread to family and acquaintances. I, myself, was almost too late to receive the long-term effectiveness of this season’s influenza immunization. But after a recent interview with Beth, one of our neighborhood Walgreen pharmacists, I was convinced.
A lot of local folks are asking, “How is the Huntley Outlet Center doing?” As they say in the famous song, “The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind.”
Variety is the spice of life – and soon it will be the spice of Sun City. MC Glamour, an energetic, two-woman variety act, will hit The Cosman Theater in Huntley this holiday season with its new show, “A Smile For Christmas.”
Author Washington Irving once said of Christmas that it is a “season for kindling the fire for hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart.” And on December 4, members of the Sunflower Garden Club of Sun City will do just that, as the group hosts its fifth annual Holiday House Walk from 3 to 7 p.m. and five Sun City residents open their doors to the anticipated 300 eventgoers.
Another break-in occurred in Sun City the second week of November. This time, the offenders took advantage of the fact that the house backed up to open space and allowed them lots of privacy.
Those elves are at it again! The Sun City Woodchucks are hard at work crafting toys to put under the tree. It may not be the North Pole (although the temperatures feel like it!), but the Woodshop is bustling with activity this holiday season.
I was not the only person grumbling on the way out of the theater after seeing this disappointing production. There is a lot of hullabaloo about this movie, the trailers presenting an exciting and potentially rewarding science fiction thriller, an opinion shared by many of the big-time movie critics. Don’t get your hopes too high.
We’re always trying to improve our broadcasting services, and we’ve just revised our daily programming schedule, gearing it to reflect all ages and interests. Beginning immediately, programming is now aligned as follows.
Could you please have a column on the yearly maintenance of water heaters? I have a Bradford White water heater that was installed by Pulte in 2006. I have been draining the tank for about 3 to 4 minutes each month. Should I drain the entire tank yearly, and if so, what is the proper way to do that?
This is the first of two reports on the Sun City community association’s 2015 financial activities, including the operating and reserve budgets.
NASCAR claims the second-largest viewing audience in America, right after pornography. And probably for the same reason: Sooner or later, somebody’s going to spin out and slam into the wall. I’ll never understand the appeal, because what’s the point of watching somebody on TV doing something you do every day?
After a busy Saturday morning running errands, Miss Nancy and Marshall Jim decided to mosey on over at high noon to a new local saloon for a shot of “Red Eye and Vittles.” This new watering hole is Niko’s Pointers Saloon in Marengo. It’s easy to find, just look for the nice rack of antlers on the shingle over the door.
This is the fifth column on building a Roadmap for your executor/heirs in the event you are incapacitated or no longer here. I encourage you to consider these kinds of preparations if you haven’t already.
Q: The news about frightening diseases scares me. Catching a simple cold can stop me in my tracks. There’s a lot of talk about Ebola, but I’ve not heard about precautions to take.
Attending the Sun City Art and Craft Faire is a highlight for my daughter Mary and I. We each thoroughly enjoy shopping for the upcoming holidays in this relaxing environment. Each of the gifts we purchase are handmade, reasonably priced, and absolutely beautiful.
The Lions of Sun City – Huntley will hold their eleventh annual tradition of lighting up Del Webb neighborhoods with luminaries on Christmas Eve.
The following are corrections to articles in the Nov. 6 edition of the Sun Day.
A man in Phoenix calls his son in New York the day before Thanksgiving and says, “I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough.”
Suzy Phillips Anderle of Sun City was seven months old in September, 1944, when her father, Joseph L. Phillips, was killed in action in World War II. For the past year, she has worked to enhance his legacy of service with her own historical research and travels. On this Veterans Day of 2014, this is her story: Joe Phillips had his future planned out in September 1944, despite the turmoil of war and conflict throughout the world, and World War II raging throughout Europe.

I am completely unprepared for it to be cold. I mean, I know it’s going to happen. It’s Illinois and it’s November, but I still want to hold on to what warm weather we have. I am a winter baby and do look forward to the season every year, but for some strange reason, I just don’t want it to come. At least not yet.
Fortunate Sons will be coming to Sun City for the second time Thursday, Nov. 20 at the Drendel Ballroom. The band formed in 2009 and strives to emulate Creedence Clearwater Revival, a rock band that reached peak popularity in the 1960s and 70s.
The Sun City association board of directors is using an unusual method to out-source some accounting operations.
Although discussions about the Ebola virus run rampant everywhere from newspapers to neighborhood chatter, the truth about the virus is hard to find. Common misconceptions about the virus, ranging from potential symptoms to the virus’s continental spread, have further added to the confusion.
I was able to secure a front row seat for a Floral Spectacular on October 29 at Huntley High School. This event was the brain-child of Lions Club President Helen Anderson.
For more than 13 years, the “card room” in Prairie Lodge has given new meaning to the term, “multi-purpose.” Get ready, Sun City, this popular room is going to get a facelift, starting either this December or early in 2015.
In the last few weeks since my Part 2 publication on this topic, a Sun City resident, Ed McFarland, admonished me for not including NAMI’s Suicide Crisis Intervention Suggestions in my column. You see NAMI or the National Alliance on Mental Illness, our nation’s largest non-profit organization, is the final definitive source of info on preventing an unnecessary death for someone in the throes of mental illness.
