MY SUN DAY NEWS
When Chuck Salvo was growing up, he had no idea his life would revolve around comedy. Sure, he was witty in school, but he wouldn’t consider himself the “class clown.”
In spite of frigid air outside the morning of Jan. 8, volunteers at Sweet Repeats Thrift Shoppe were shuffling about to stock the store’s shelves with spring and summer merchandise.
In July 2013, the Illinois General Assembly approved legislation that permits concealed carry of handguns in specified locations after receipt of a state permit. It went into effect Jan. 1. Rule-making is now underway to define how and where the law will be applied and enforced.
My four part series on Multiple Sclerosis has illustrated the bravery shown by Sun City’s seniors who have struggled with the disorder’s varying symptoms through a large segment of their lives. Resident Carol Schaefer has a phenomenal story to tell about her struggle to maintain physical strength.
I’m blond with brown eyes, cute, energetic and two years old. I am Regina the new female yellow Labrador guide dog for Sun City resident Mary Kozy, and I’d like to tell you a little about myself.
My wife suffered a stroke, and I am her caregiver. I hate to admit that I am emotionally spent, and I don’t have any relief in sight. What is available in my community for help?
Paul Bunyan had a Blue Ox named Babe but what exactly is a Red Ox, you ask? Turns out, it’s a restaurant in Hampshire. Many years ago, the owner’s father had an establishment in Elgin called the Blue Ox Restaurant, so the Red Ox is actually the son of the Blue Ox. Got it? I’m glad you do…
A $6,000 donation was made to the Northern Illinois Food Bank from the ACBL (American Contract Bridge League) unit 239, and in addition, $2,100 was donated to the Grafton Food Pantry collected through the Sun City Bridge Club by our club member Mary Belcher.
A new state law took effect Jan. 1, 2014 that bans the use of hand-held devices while driving in Illinois. Motorists still can chat and drive but only if they use hands-free technology, such as a Bluetooth device, earpiece, headset, or speakerphone.
The holidays are now over and many are fighting unwanted pounds, clothes that don’t fit, and New Year’s resolutions that include dieting. The word “diet” is a set course of eating and drinking in which the kinds and amounts of food one should eat are planned in order to achieve weight loss.
I took a stroll down Main Street in Spamville early this morning. I was lucky enough to make it back home, but I’m still trying to regain my balance.
If you’ve read Happy Trails since January of 2011, you’ll know I’m not a fan of New Year’s resolutions. I’m actually a big proponent of resolutions, (reinvention is a powerful fulcrum, after all) but for me, the New Year presents too much pressure to go for the gold, which is why I withhold my resolutions for less “new” times of the year. For example, May is a nice odd month for change.
Judy had just moved from an apartment to a house in the same small town. One day at the grocery store, she used the last of her personalized checks, bearing her old address.
Question: When the temperatures get below zero, we have loud banging noises coming from the attic. The noise occurs all over the house. Sometimes it sounds like the rafters are cracking. Sometimes the noise is so loud it frightens me.
When the snow is falling and chilly winds blow, there’s nothing like curling up with a good book to stir your inner warmth. From the time we opened our very first books, many of us began a love of reading that transported us to wondrous worlds of knowledge, entertainment, and adventure.

Santa Claus is one of the world’s most traditional and unchanging figures. You know the imagery: ho-ho-hos, red suit, plump belly, big white beard, loves kids no matter what, Rudolph and the gang, elves, North Pole, etc. Santa today is the same jolly old guy we’ve known for generations.
With the Illinois Family and Personal Protection Act set to take effect in January, Illinois citizens can apply for concealed carry permits next month. Those trained and qualified should be able to obtain permits by April.

We have been living in Sun City since 2001. I have been decorating ever since I moved here. Even before coming to Sun City, I would decorate for Christmas every year.
The holiday time is now upon us. It’s a time for awkward family dinners where verbal jabs are passed around like a bad green-bean casserole.
As a skeptical kid whose faith in Santa was fading, it was a barcode that hammered the final nail into my coffin of innocence one fateful Christmas night.
Before we end our discussion on fats, we need to include another tropical oil with benefits. Used primarily in Southeast Asia and West Africa, palm oil is the main source of dietary fat for millions of people and as much a part of their diet as olive oil is in the Mediterranean.
I am sorry to admit I don’t have a will or trust and was told this is very important. I spoke to a friend who seems to have it all “together,” and I feel so behind in this area. Where do I begin? I am 75 years old.
There is still time for taking action prior to year end to save yourself some income tax dollars, especially if you will have income above $200,000 for the year.
