MY SUN DAY NEWS
Don’t drive at all if you can avoid it. If you must go out, wait until the snow plows have had a chance to do their work.
In the old days, TVs had a large glass picture tube. Cleaning it was easy: just spray on a little Windex and wipe away the dirt. Modern flat screen TVs are bigger, and the surface of the screen is much more fragile.
Note: First, thanks to all the residents that responded to our survey. I must admit that I was amazed and surprised to read some of the responses for a variety of reasons, especially by the large number of restaurants mentioned.
No mode of transportation has fascinated modern man as much as trains. Trains…trains…trains. They transformed the wild west into the noisy west. They spawned songs, musicals, poems, and story after story.
Tomorrow, December 21, is a big day. First, it’s the winter solstice and, therefore, the shortest day of the year, which is a big deal for the vampire I am. I love the dark (and almost hate the sun). Second, it’s my wife’s birthday! Third, and this one may trump 1 and 2, according to the Mayan Calendar, it may be the end of the world. (Doomsday? Darkness? Yes, the jokes abound about my wife’s birthday being the darkest day of the year and possibly the end of the world to boot!)
In six years, Holiday Magic has established itself as not only the largest holiday event in Edgewater, but the largest event the community hosts all year. This year’s edition, held Dec. 9 at the Seville in Streamwood, drew about 300 residents to a brunch and dessert served both to tables and buffet-style.
Come January, Sun City may be awash in snow, but there will be an oasis for frozen residents: Drendel Hall.
Euchre players really know how to party. When they pay their $5 annual dues, they are promised a regular weekly schedule of opportunities to play their favorite card game. They also are informed that every four to six weeks, they will have a party featuring an impressive array of food and beverage options.
If you still feel stuffed from your Thanksgiving dinner, you might not like this fact: the average person consumed 3000 calories on that particular holiday. You would have to run for four straight hours, walk for 12 hours, or play tennis for six hours to burn off those calories.
More than 14 years after it was started, and more than four years later than planned, the Sun City build-out is nearly complete. All of the community’s home sites now have homes on them, but three of them remained to be sold, as of Dec. 10.
Residents of Neighborhood 35 in far south Sun City knew they would be close to the Jane Addams I-90 Tollway when they bought their homes. Until this past summer, the audible traffic noise didn’t bother them.
My mother-in-law, Mimi, was visiting us for the holidays, and she had a taste for an Italian meal prepared the Italian way. She was born and raised in Italy, travels to visit yearly, and knows her Italian dishes. So Roland and I took her to Café Roma, a true “hidden gem” at the end of Point Boulevard in Elgin, behind and to the right of Country Inn Suites.
Our editorial manager, Mason Souza, has been telling me about a place in Algonquin that he says makes the best subs around. I’ve always been a big fan of Bubs Subs, so I said we need to have a run off to see which shop comes out on top. So, it’s Bubs Subs vs. The Algonquin Sub Shop, affectionately known as A.S.S.
A resident wrote to us a few months back about a problem she had with her oven. She is a self-described baker and had noticed in the past year that cookies and cakes were not baking through like they used to. We answered her question and just received a follow up confirming that our advice fixed her problem.
I cut my hair this morning. When I say “I cut my hair,” I mean that my hair was cut by me. It was a self-inflicted haircut, as all my haircuts have been for years and years.
If you are looking to have a smooth holiday with your four-legged friend, you may want to sit him down and tell him the rules and guidelines below that will need to be followed. I would make him sign it so there are no misunderstandings! Have a happy holiday season, everyone!
This week’s recipe is from a regular contributor to this column, Chuck Maniscalco of N-33. I have to admit it; this guy is my cooking god. He even makes his own Italian sausage that beats anything offered in stores. Here’s a great and very unique soup recipe perfect for the coming winter months. Thanks, Chuck.
Letters for the week of December 20
It’s difficult to keep up with the cousins as they deftly fold, cut, fill, bake, glaze and sprinkle each and every cookie. When the behind-the-scenes work of making the dough and filling is taken into account, the whole process seems even more intimidating.
To spare our readers the chore of driving all over Sun City in search of Christmas spirit, the Sun Day contacted various neighborhoods to find out the hotspots and best areas to check out this season.
For close to three decades now, the Fay’s pork chop and chicken BBQ dinner has graced the grounds of the St. John’s United Church of Christ in Huntley. The annual dinner, held toward summer’s end, is the church’s largest fundraising effort.
My class members, many of whom are on 10 to 15 meds each, tell me that when they go to their doctors and ask them to take them off some of their prescriptions, especially statins, that the doctors reply they need them; many for life.
After writing my two-part story on SAD, it recently occurred to me that there are many Sun Citians truly sad during the holidays due to the loss of loved ones who have died at this time of year, in the past year, or in recent years. At a time when people are expected to be “jolly” at holiday parties, December becomes a most difficult period especially for those grieving.
Whether snowflakes bring to mind memories of sledding and skating or aggravation at the thought of shovels and standstills, one fact is sure: winter calls for a change of driving habits.
Camille and Kennerly Kitt are the world’s only known identical twin professional harp players. They were trained classically but have arranged modern day songs to be played on the harp.
On Saturday, Dec. 1 at approximately 2:04 p.m., the Huntley Police Department responded to a single vehicle crash near the intersection of Del Webb Boulevard and Sumer Ridge Lane involving a motorcycle.
For years, I’ve enjoyed hosting our annual holiday gatherings. I’ve done it all, and the kids have loved it. Earlier this year, my health has suffered, and now I don’t think I can make it all happen like I used to. None of my children have offered to take over, so I am wondering how to host the holidays considering my limitations.
Don’t make it easy for “smash & grab” auto thieves. Keep wallets, purses, cell phones, keys, and other tempting items out of sight, if you must leave them in your car. If you’ll need to store valuables in your trunk while you shop, put them there before getting to your destination. Don’t let a thief observe you putting valuables into the trunk.
Letters for the week of December 13.
This holiday season, we seem to be struggling to get into the holiday spirit. The concerns over the economy, the fiscal cliff, unemployment, rising costs of living, and no hockey have us all stressed out. Not even the early Black Friday (that started on Thanksgiving), nor cyber Monday seemed to get us in holiday gear.
