A great pumpkin tradition

The pumpkin is a rather grotesque-looking type of squash, so much so that it inspired a centuries’-old tradition of carving spooky illuminated faces into the rough orange hide. Today, some dedicated pumpkin growers hold contests to see who can grow the largest of these bumpy behemoths – some weighing over a ton.

Q. I have two neighbors who are homebound, and I worry about them. One has a caregiver that comes to help her, but my other neighbor does not have a support system in place. Her family is not in the area, either. How can I help without over-extending myself?

How the Count made great vocalists greater

Any study of the history of jazz music would be incomplete without the inclusion of another royal member: William “Count” Basie. Born in 1904, he lived for 80 years as one of the most revered American jazz pianists, bandleaders, and composers. His first piano lessons came from his mother, and he was performing in his teens.

How our lovely leaves get their colors

This afternoon, my daughter Mary and I will make our second trip to Milwaukee in three days. We will drive up there again next Wednesday. When the kids were younger, a drive in the car was peaceful. We would listen to books on tape (The Jungle Book was our favorite), Spanish music (to promote language learning), or if I needed some adult conversation, they would read books and I would listen to WGN Radio.

An important discovery

It was 1964 that I left the hospital field about ready to deliver my first child. In my heart I knew that I could never return to dietetics the way it was practiced. For a short time, I kept up my registration as a dietitian, going to all the required seminars. In 1959 I had become a “born again Christian,” accepting Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior.

Breast Cancer Support Hour gives back to local charities

We had our Breast Cancer Support Hour meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 3 and gave checks from the proceeds of our walk to the three Sun City Charities: Head Huggers, Project Linus and Baby Caps.

February 9, 1964 – Four young lads from Liverpool perform on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” paving the way for the British Invasion on American ears for years to follow. November 2009 – Four (admittedly older) men perform at the Ted O’Sullivan Show put on by the Celtic Club in Sun City. The band, Phlashbak, is part of a new wave of music coming from Sun City.
