MY SUN DAY NEWS
On July 17, the Village of Huntley completed a decades-long process to open some doors to its future. It took the longest ribbon in the community’s ribbon-cutting history to get it done.
Do you find yourself biting your fingernails? Does your skin break out into an occasional rash for no known reason? You might be suffering from a few symptoms of daily stress. Wouldn’t it be great if your immune system could be stress-free and thus resist almost any illnesses, especially those mentioned in Part 3 of this series? In Part 4, I will discuss stress-busting techniques to help fight the debilitating mental and physical problems related to stress.
In 1955, Illinois passed the Use tax Act. A use tax (more commonly referred to as a sales tax) is imposed on the privilege of using, in this state, any kind of general merchandise, food, drugs, or medical appliances that are purchased anywhere at retail from a retailer.
In a previous column, I wrote about the man most responsible for the big band era, Benny Goodman. This week, it’s all about the man I consider the BG successor, bringing big band into the 21st century: Gordon Goodwin and his Big Phat Band.
I love Sun City. I get to play with kids my own age. I still like to see an occasional man without earrings, one who limps like me in the morning and has a keg not a six pack stomach. However, living among our own generation has its drawbacks. You have to stay hip and cool or your grandkids won’t understand you and you won’t understand them. So, here are a few tips for living in Sun City without becoming a dinosaur.
“We have to do something about this!” my son demanded as we got out of the car. “Do something about what?” I asked. “The grass,” he responded. “Look at this.” I looked down past his size 8 feet and noticed what he was looking at. His obscenely large Osiris shoes were walking on ugly brown grass as we approached our front door. “We will not do something about that” I exclaimed. “When it rains, it will come back!”
Taking statin drugs not only deprives your body of beneficial cholesterol for important body functions but plays havoc with numerous painful, debilitating side effects:
Q. I want to try water aerobics, but I have not stepped into a pool for years. I’ve heard so many good things about it from friends, but quite frankly, I am a little self-conscious about the whole thing.

A man goes to the doctor and tells him that he hasn’t been feeling well. The doctor examines him, leaves the room, and comes back with three different bottles of pills.
Perhaps “bone dry by the Fourth of July” is the better slogan when it comes to corn production this year. Though front lawn perfectionists and puddle jumpers surely loathe the lack of rain, farmers have it worse. This season’s drought has wreaked havoc on field corn production.
Do you know a reporter personally? Do they seem a little off to you in social situations or conversations? Are they bad at planning things in advance? Do they not react to positive news the same way you do? Don’t worry, the next line is not, “Ask your doctor if…” Instead, I’m here to clear the air and speak on behalf of reporters, editors, and anyone involved in the news business to explain why they are the way they are.
As seniors, you already are aware of the debilitating effects of stress. How many doctor visits have you made when your physician’s answer to your physical, mental, or perhaps emotional and psychological illness ends with the diagnosis of stress and its released hormones? There are some experts who think that most illnesses are stress-related, either causing the problem or aggravating it.
On Thursday, July 26 in Drendel Ballroom from 7-8:30 p.m., residents will be teleported back to their youth with radio legend Clark Weber. He worked at the WLS radio station first as a DJ and then as a talk show host. Later in his career, he ran a syndicated one-minute radio show called, “A Senior Moment.”
Edgewater seniors looking to hit the links and shoot a few holes can now do so for a little less, thanks in part to a partnership between the Elgin community and the Bowes Creek Country Club.
The City of Elgin, in collaboration with area community and business leaders, will hold its inaugural International Festival on September 1 at Festival Park in Elgin. Elgin’s International Festival, or iFest for short, will bring together dozens of the world’s cultures, reflecting the diversity of cultures in Elgin, Illinois.
The idea of taking your dog to a dog park sounds like such a great idea. What could be wrong with your friendly dog playing with other dogs? They can have fun while socializing, getting some exercise, and enjoying the outdoors.
General Electric dishwashers built between 1997 and 2001 were found to have a wiring problem that has caused fires. Many of these were installed in Del Webb houses built before 2003. In May of 2007, GE issued a recall on these dishwashers. The owner is given two options. Option 1 is a $150 rebate on a new dishwasher. Option 2 is a repair where they replace the wiring harness in the door of the dishwasher.
Bam! Crack! Dot! This is what you’ll hear coming from the sunroom if you happen to be at the Lodge on Tuesday mornings anytime between 10 a.m. and noon. Oh, and lots of tiles sliding across tables and laughter, plenty of laughter! It’s the Edgewater ladies playing Mah jongg.
Recently, I joined 15 of my neighbors and attended the N.33 Men’s Luncheon held at the Blackstone Golf Club in Marengo. The restaurant is located on Rt. 20 before entering Marengo. It’s about a 20-minute ride from Sun City.
Summer has embraced us in record-setting fashion. The Bulls found out one man was even more important than they thought, the Blackhawks got another dose of NHL parity, the Fire is good but probably not enough for glory, and the relentless heat just won’t leave us alone. Were our record-breaking temperatures another version of the hated Miami Heat?
Letters to the editor for the week of July 19.
“For tall projects only.” These four words nicely laminated and typed in black bold font are found taped to a green-lined shelf. Large figurines of rabbits and gnomes, some creatively colored, others bare white, stand in no specific order. A glance to the top left shelf uncovers a line of perfectly shaped ducks. A look to the right and a large orange-glazed pumpkin sits immobile situated near the front.
I am positive that if you had to contact the customer service departments of major corporations on a regular basis, you’d go insane real quick.
It caused once vibrant green grass to turn a parched brown. It almost dried up Huntley’s hopes of a proper Fourth of July celebration. It turned car interiors into torture chambers, and it seemed to have no mercy.
Fred Leznek took to the podium for the first time as new president of Sun City’s Current Events Charter Club on July 3.

Alan Boyle didn’t bike at all until he joined CyclePaths. When he first started, it took a while to pick up on biking. “He was in the back and couldn’t keep up with anybody,” said Bob Kling, current president of CyclePaths. “Now he’s way ahead of everybody.”
It’s been two weeks since the Supreme Court upheld the majority of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), and responses from both sides are continuing to voice their approval or concerns with the passage.
