MY SUN DAY NEWS
The following report is a chronological timetable of Sun City’s 9/11 tribute to the 2977 lives lost on that day ten years ago to terrorists’ attacks in New York City, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia.
Some days are memorable but a few days will be etched into our memories as long as we live. Those memories are reinforced by national anniversaries, pictures, TV/Radio, and re-telling of the events.
Meet your Sun City Board of Directors 2011 candidates.
If you are among the many lucky Sun Citians who have seen Otto Volkmann jogging around the bike paths, be advised that you are not just watching any ordinary fitness buff.
T2D A.K.A. Type 2 Diabetes A.K.A. Metabolic Syndrome. No matter how it’s referred to, this disease is a serious concern and health risk for the aging individual, especially those over 60.
Claudia Anderson of N-11 is the big winner this week, as she sent in not one, but TWO of her “moments.” Thanks for your contributions, Claudia.
About nine years ago, Sandy Oldham (N. 12) started a dance group that today has grown to 77-80 Sun City residents. They are known as the Hoofers and Hunks and will present their 9th Annual Show at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday, October 2 and 7 p.m. Monday, October 3 in Drendel Ballroom.
You have two or more sillcocks on your house even if you don’t know the name sillcock. They are the outside faucets where you connect garden hoses, and they often leak. If a sillcock leaks when the water is on, you are in luck, as the fix is relatively easy. This leak is caused by a loose packing nut.
My recent column entitled, “Have you been declared prematurely dead?” reported that the Social Security Administration erroneously includes in its Death Index database approximately 14,000 persons annually who, in fact, are not dead.
Q: Sometimes I feel rushed during my doctor visits, and I forget to discuss important things with him. I actually get a little nervous. How do I relax so that I don’t miss talking about what is on my mind?
This week, we chose to go to a local event at the Café 20 restaurant in Marengo. Our neighbors, Mike and Emma, joined us for the weekend activities under a large tent, a first for all of us at this restaurant. I will depart somewhat from my usual review format because this was a unique venue. This will also be a very brief review, featuring the highlights and lowlights of our evening.
Letters to the editor for the week of September 22, 2011.
The September 13 meeting of the Current Events Club was held at Meadow View Lodge. Praise was given to the six residents who organized the 9/11 commemoration at the Pavilion. A comment was made that the absence of any terrorist activity in the USA that day shows either that Al Qaeda is quite weak now, or our security people did a great job, or some combination thereof.

On the 10-year anniversary of that awful day, N.18 included in its commemoration the placing of an American flag by each house.

An elderly woman walked into the local church. The friendly usher greeted her at the door and helped her up a flight of steps.
Nick Koplos’ 75th Birthday Party, given by his wife, Joanie, was attended by 50 family members and friends on Sunday, August 14.
“I have a very intimate connection with it. I’m an American.” Whether you were right across the street or on the other side of the continent, all Americans can relate to Neighborhood 29 resident Peg Mulhall’s words about 9/11.
“Where were you … ?” Without it being said, we all know what follows the beginning of that question because those three words is all it takes for any American to transport themselves back to the morning of September 11, 2001, when nearly 3,000 Americans lost their lives to the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania.
Normally an encore is a short set that happens after the main show, when the crowd cheers for more. But in Sun City, an encore is an entire show itself and an evening of unforgettable performances. It’s also, some say, the “hottest ticket in Del Webb.”
“You’re not alone” is a familiar phrase, but to the Breast Cancer Support Group in the Del Webb community, it means a whole lot to several people, both women and men.
Convenience is something that most people tend to take for granted. Most days we can hop in our car and, in ten minutes, are surrounded by big-box stores that sell just about anything that we could ever need. So that begs the question of what folks are supposed to do when they find themselves awash in a sea of houses with nary a store in sight?
Among the many leads that Huntley Police are checking regarding five burglaries that have occurred in Sun City in the last five months, one potentially significant, “long-shot” pattern has emerged.
Letters to the editor.
This week, we chose to go to a Woodfield Mall restaurant that neither we nor our friends Tom and Marlene had ever been to for dinner. Somehow, we just never got around to trying one of The Cheesecake Factory chain establishments. This turned out to be one of the best decisions we’ve made as far as the many choices of restaurants we have to review.
The last foot of a number of blacktop driveways in Sun City are becoming cracked and are sinking. They will soon need to be replaced unless some required maintenance is done. To see if you have neglected your driveway enough to have this problem, inspect the last foot of your driveway where it interfaces with the concrete sidewalk and where it interfaces with the concrete apron in front of your garage.
The Stingrays’ second swim meet of the summer took place on Tuesday, August 23, at Homewood-Flossmoor’s Park District’s “Senior Fun Day,” located at their Lion’s Park.
You’re standing on an artificial turf court, about 50 feet long. You roll a little red target ball, called a pallino, in the same way you roll a bowling roll down the alley, only much slower. Then you take a bocce ball, about the size of a softball, but much heavier, and try to roll it as close to the pallino as you can.
Q: The current events of our time are making me feel overwhelmed and depressed. How can I fight the down feelings I have?
