Laughter by Paul: November 4, 2010

A small farm boy was milking his cow when all of a sudden a bull came charging toward him. As horrified workers nearby watched, the boy calmly continued his milking.

Have you started your Holiday shopping yet?

It won’t be long before the stores will be playing “Jingle Bells” and “Here comes Santa Claus.” Yes, the season is upon us. The traffic will be picking up, parking lots will be full, waiting lines at check-outs will be getting longer, and store hours will extend for the holiday shopping sprees. But there is an alternative.

Hang Your Hat: November 4, 2010

As the Sun City Board of Directors faced what was probably the largest crowd ever for a monthly meeting, two things became quite obvious.

Part 2: The ‘Ides’ march into Sun City for a smash-hit performance

Sun Day music columnist Moonlight Mojo Man continues his conversation with band members.

Friend, mentor, community leader remembered

When I learned that Jim Roberts passed away, it was like a scene from 23 years ago. I was in my parents’ kitchen, talking to my mother while digging around their refrigerator for a rod of string cheese. My mother was on the phone with my father doing the thing that women do so well: swinging two conversations at once (me here, him there).

And who said you can’t buy your happiness? I can

If there was one way (among the many, I assure you) that I was a strange child, it was that I didn’t like candy or sweets of almost any sort. Imagine that: a child who does not like sugar!

Friends in Sun City, Huntley, Thank You!

The greatest inspiration and encouragement Jim received during his 145-day hospitalization were the wonderful messages received from you, his friends and associates in the Community.

John Sterling remembers Jim Roberts

I knew of Jim and Pam Roberts even before we moved to Sun City. Jim and Pam moved in the summer of 2001, and we moved in the fall of 2001. Each of us moved from the east coast—the Roberts from New Jersey and the Sterlings from Rhode Island.

Roberts a cherished member of the Woodchucks

When I moved to Del Webb in 2000, I thought I was in Disney World. After getting settled, I heard they were planning on building a woodshop; then I knew I had died and gone to heaven.

Fred Teeman remembers Jim Roberts

I knew Jim Roberts more by what he did than who he was. I regret that because I sensed he was a man who did a lot of living and had a lot to share with others.

What’s he wearing under his kilt!?

The Sun City Celtic Club celebrated their 9th anniversary on September 2nd in Drendel Ballroom. As always, the crowd arrived in rare form—some wearing Hawaiian Shirts, and some wearing Kilts. No matter what their choice of attire was, they were determined to have a great time.

Culture, beauty, and dance

From 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, November 13, the Drendel Ballroom will light up with the culture and beauty of Korea, when the ADL Korean Dance Institute graces the stage for a once-in-a-lifetime evening experience.

If you’re going to cause some racket, take it inside

At Sun City, tennis is a year-round sport. The hardy tennis enthusiasts who hang around Huntley when cold weather comes stay active with the serves and volleys at welcoming indoor venues in the Huntley area.

Grandma, Grandpa & Me Club Halloween party treats tricksters

The time of ghosts and goblins is upon us once again. This Sunday, October 24, Sun City will be inundated with pirates, ninjas, ballerinas, and lady bugs when The Grandma, Grandpa and Me Club has their Halloween Party.

The Bird Lady

Jess Chipkin (N.22) is known in her neighborhood as “the bird lady.” When her neighborhood had its own newspaper, she contributed a Q & A on birds. Her corner-lot home is replete with an array of sparrows, doves, finches, blue jays, robins, cardinals, and woodpeckers that come to snack at her birdfeeders.

Golf cart winter storage

In the last issue, we wrote about how to prepare your house when you are going to be away so there are no preventable problems when you return. Many of you also have a golf cart which needs attention when you put it away for the winter whether you are home or not. Jim Johnson of Beaver Creek Golf Carts provides these helpful suggestions in the following checklist.

Laughter by Paul: October 21, 2010

A man was sitting quietly reading his paper when his wife walked up behind him and whacked him on the head with a magazine. “What’s that for?” he asked.

Why don’t credit card cash advances have grace periods?

I must get at least two invitations per week to sign up for another credit card. With the current economy, the financial institutions are getting pretty aggressive in their offers for new accounts. They really want your business.

The ‘Ides’ march into Sun City for a smash-hit performance

Sun Day music columnist Moonlight Mojo Man sits down with band members for a little Q&A.

Writer’s Corner: Heart Trouble

Margo Coeur was shopping at the supermarket one morning when she experienced a small but significant incident.

Geezer Moments: October 21, 2010

I’m starting today’s column with one from my travel senior softball days, when we would hold fundraisers to pay for our tournament entry fees.

Do you volunteer?

Do you volunteer? Or have you thought about starting to volunteer? If so, the benefits of volunteering may be bigger and better then you thought!

SunCPAC Q’s & A’s: October 21, 2010

Where does Sun City Property Assessment Council get all of its information?

Little sticks

When most people see a toothpick, its obvious uses come to mind. But when Cesar Vega of Neighborhood 31 looks at a toothpick, he sees the Eifel Tower, a Model T Ford, a stagecoach, or perhaps a working trolley car, among many other wonders of mechanics and structure.

Tooth and nail

There are no colorful props—no appropriate storefronts, houses, staircases, ships, merry-go-rounds, city streets, parks—nothing to lend visual authenticity to the production. In the Sound of Music, where’s the abbey? Or a staircase with seven charming children singing goodnight to party guests? In Some Like it Hot, where is the mysterious cabaret? Or a train car? In Brigadoon, where are the landscapes symbolizing Scottish moors? In Fiddler on the Roof, where are the rooftops?

Art & Alma’s, the story as it is told

BURLINGTON – It may be decades since the last person used a hitching post at Art & Alma’s restaurant rather than a parking space, but the history of that Great American Era still remains in this fine-dining establishment.

I’m sorry, I have no more cars to give to the gods

Have you ever thought that you’d rather actually go insane than have car troubles (although, those two usually go hand-in-hand, don’t they)? Of course, going insane would be worse than having car troubles, but I’ve never liked the saying “It could be worse,” because where does that forward-thinking end? Has anyone said that to you, and you said, “Fine, explain”?
