Fun and games

For one night this season, the Fun Nite Committee will put away their bingo cards and tumbler and roll out an evening of holiday entertainment with their first-ever Fun Nite Holiday Party.

Tip 8: Basic heat transfer

Heating and cooling your house is basic heat transfer. In the summer, you are collecting the heat in your house with the air conditioning evaporator located in your furnace. The heat is then pumped outside with the air conditioner refrigerant and dumped into the outside air through the condenser.

Laughter by Paul: December 2, 2010

One of my fourth graders asked my teacher’s assistant, “How old are you, Mrs. Glass?”

Geezer Moments: December 2, 2010

Softball buddy Jimmy Hayes starts this week’s column with this “moment”: My wife and I are watching the Late Show last week, and I find a piece of paper with several names on it. I don’t recognize any of them. I ask her who these people are. She says, “They are people that I voted for.” I said, “Oh, you mean obscure judges on the ballot?” She says, “Oh, no, they are people on “Dancing with the Stars.”

V is for volunteer of the year

“I want to give back,” Maureen Berg of Neighborhood 7 says. “I never dreamt I would get an opportunity like that.” Maureen, who has been blind since 1996, after she was severely injured in an auto accident in Woodstock, IL, has, for the last eight years, volunteered her time at school District 158 with CSO, Community Student Outreach, a program started by Sun City residents Bob Hurrie and Dick Evans to provide volunteers to D-158 for whatever support the school District, students, or teachers need.

What I’ll be thinking about around the Thanksgiving table

Whether my parents want to admit it or not, and no matter how much my mother tells me I was a welcomed addition to the family and loved all the same, I know that I was an oops baby … unless two people plan to have a child at 38 and 40 (mother and father respectively) and to separate their first batch of kids from their last child by 17-, 14-, and 10-and-half years.

No strings attached

Huntley High School students and Sun City residents have been creating exquisite music together for the past 3 years. Residents such as Sam Geati of N.33, who is a member of a men’s tap-dance group called “The Hunks,” the Tall Oaks Tennis Club, the “Travelers” softball team, the 51-piece Concert Band, the 18-piece Jazz Ensemble titled “Lets Dance,” and his own trio, “Blue Skies,” has been working with the students at Huntley High School for the past year.

100 voices plus 2 shows equals perfect harmony

One hundred voices talking all at once makes cacophony. But 100 voices all singing in harmony makes the 2010 Prairie Singers Christmas concert.

Moving ‘fjord-ward’

This past August, Nick and Joanie Koplos of Neighborhood 32B enjoyed a wonderful 16-day trip to France, England, and the Norwegian Fjords, located on the SW coast of Norway. While their experiences in France and England were strong in historic encounters, Norway provided the Sun City couple with daring physical challenges.

Lack of state funding jeopardizes interlibrary loan program

“I think everybody’s well aware the state is going through a financial crunch at the moment. And it has obligations that it’s not able to fill financially.”

Ask the Woodchucks: Windows

The windows in your house are double pane with an inert insulating gas sealed between the panes. Occasionally, this seal fails, and moisture will appear in the space between the two panes of glass. If this happens, the window must be replaced; however, you are in luck, as they are warranted by the manufacturer.

The little instrument that could

Quick now: What did Abraham Lincoln, Billy the Kid, and John Lennon all have in common?

Quick Notes: November 18, 2010

In the weeks since the Walleye Grill closed, the Sun Day has received dozens of emails and phone calls from Sun City residents asking if there’s anything the paper can do to help reopen the Walleye Grill.

SunCPAC Q&As: November 18, 2010

If my assessment appeal period has expired, what can I do about an inaccurate assessment?

Are you getting the lowest cost per mile with your vehicle?

The cost of fuel is rising again and just went over $3.00 per gallon. I can remember when I was in the army, I could buy gas on the base at $.25 per gallon. Oh, for those days again! The rising costs sure keep us looking for ways to reduce our fuel consumption and get the best cost per mile.

Geezer Moments: November 18, 2010

In this week’s column, I am departing from my usual format and instead am telling a true story, which, in a way, still is a “geezer moment” of sorts.

Laughter By Paul: November 18, 2010

“Mommy, Mommy, where are you?” cried the little boy standing outside a store in the shopping mall.

Chairs up

Sun City lost one of its best-known amenities as Walleye Grill hosted its last guests under Twelfth Night Catering and closed Sunday, October 17.

Crazy or ambitious? Is there a difference really?

If there’s one thing that could be said about my professional endeavors, it’s that I’m no coward … either that, or I’m completely crazy. I tend to think it’s a little of both.

Affairs of the Art

If you are looking to add some pizzazz into your day or even your home, the biannual Affair of the Arts art show offers entertainment, beauty, and fellowship in a wooded setting at The Shores of Turtle Creek in Spring Grove on Sunday, November 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Back home again

John Denver once wrote, with help from Placido Domingo, in his song, “Perhaps Love,” “Perhaps love is like a resting place, A shelter from the storm, It exists to give you comfort, It is there to keep you warm, And in those times of trouble, When you are most alone, The memory of love will bring you home.” This sentiment will spread across Sun City on Saturday, November 20 during the John Denver Tribute Performance at 7 p.m. in Drendel Ballroom.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month

Nearly 24 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes, and 57 million more Americans have prediabetes and are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. November is National Diabetes Awareness month, a time when the American Diabetes Association spreads awareness about the disease and the seriousness of its complications.

Pulte to vacate Prairie Lodge

Pulte Group’s slow-moving build-out efforts are becoming a very big deal to a lot of people at Sun City, and a lot of it has nothing to do with selling home sites.

Sun City veterans take Honor Flight to DC

Joe (Julius) Biro (88) and John Kligis (90). Along with their “guardians,” they were taken by a beautiful McHenry County Veterans Assistance Group to Milwaukee to fly out on Southwest Airlines to Baltimore on Friday, Oct. 1. They were met in Baltimore and transported to the Hilton Hotel and treated to a wonderful dinner Friday night and given Honor Flight t-shirts.

Call to arms

For almost 200 years, Huntley has never failed to live up to the words of John F. Kennedy: “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” Since the War of 1812, dozens upon dozens of Huntley residents responded to this nation’s call to arms, defending our freedom and the freedom of others in every conflict since almost 50 years before Huntley’s official founding in 1851.

Geezer Moments: November 4, 2010

Many of our friends who are not Sun City residents continue to send their “moments” to me. Here’s one from former neighbors now living in Las Vegas, so this one gets the award for coming the farthest.
