While pickleball has risen in popularity over the past few years, now there’s something new: Pop tennis. Pop tennis is the rebranding of the 100-year-old paddle tennis that is being played across the USA and around the world.
Keeping your lawn green with your sprinkler system has gotten more expensive this year. Some residents were surprised when they looked closely at their water bill.
Not unlike honey bees returning to the flowers and fauna, the Sun City charter clubs have returned to active life. Joe Quinn, a member of the Woodchucks, commented that “there were at least 90 members at the Woodchucks meeting on June second.” Activities at the Millgrove Workshop are expected to increase.

Americans are increasingly bicycling to commute, for exercise, or just for fun. In Sun City, you can see residents biking as a club, (CyclePaths) or biking to play pickleball. By law, bicycles on the roadway have the same rights and responsibilities as motorized vehicles.
Jim had a lot of recording sessions at the radio station one day, so we decided it would be a good idea to have a big breakfast. While trying to decide where to go, we remembered driving down Algonquin Road and seeing signs for a new brunch restaurant. Great.
Seems as though getting back to “normal” isn’t as easy as one would hope. Travel advertised and events being announced, there is still this general sense of unease. As we make way out of bomb shelter battlements we have created out in our homes, what do we make of this new world?
There is a park just a few miles north of Huntley that my children and I used to go to frequently when they were younger. Its proximity close to the south branch of the Kishwaukee River makes it prone to flooding. We affectionately refer to it simply as Flooded Park. In previous years, more often than not the entire park would be flooded.
My husband and I are in our mid-70s. Other than my husband being in the early-moderate stages of dementia, we are in decent health. However, over the course of the COVID pandemic, it became evident that I need more help.
With the pandemic rounding the corner and the successful vaccine rollout in Sun City, residents are approaching a degree of the long-awaited normalcy and returning to their favorite activities.
I don’t often write about political issues but here we go (and, no, you’re still not going to be able to glean what side of the aisle I sit, if I sit on a side at all!).
Last week I went to the second-best hot dog stand in the world and ordered a couple Chicago dogs with everything, including a pile of greasy French fries that would have kept a Potato Famine family of six going for a week or more. It was my first venture to that hot dog stand in a year, and it was good to find that they still put out the second-best hot dog in the world.
By now, Huntley residents may be fully aware of an Amazon receive center that will be occupying property on 41W368 Freeman Road. As completion for the receive center is anticipated for June 2022, it has begun conversations regarding the potential for other major businesses to take interest in coming to Huntley.
The May 24 Sun City Board meeting was held in the Birch room of the Fountain View Lodge. Fewer than 20 residents were in attendance, and an additional 34 were viewing the YouTube video broadcast at the beginning of the meeting. The YouTube audio experienced some technical difficulties.
I, like so many teenage girls who lived in the 50s through the 60s, welcomed our rich bronze skin tans as a sign of a healthy glow. Indeed, we lathered our skins with a baby oil and iodine mixture aided with the use of a tin foil plate placed under our chins to gather even stronger sun rays reflected onto our faces!
You may already be active in many Facebook groups. Connecting with neighbors and local services through social networks surged during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Wildflower Lake Neighbors Facebook Page was introduced to the Sun City community during the pandemic by one of Sun City residents, Mark Schinler.

For most of 2020, all of our normal routines have been disrupted to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. In Sun City, clubs were on hold and allowed for minimal interaction with their members. Recently, clubs and sports have started to return to Sun City. The parking lot is full of eager tennis and pickleball players.
Recently, Chris’ mom stayed with us for a few weeks. We each did our own thing during the day. She spent time resting while recovering from a medical procedure and Chris and I worked. Our evenings were filled with listening to wonderful stories about her childhood, intense scrabble games and fun rummy card matches. It was truly a joy to have her in our home.
Summer is upon us once again. With it comes the expectation of long sunny days and starry nights. Time will have to be filled with all the fun and frivolity this year has to offer. And there’s only just so much running after the ice cream truck one can do. This means going back to theaters for the blockbuster season.
May is not a good month for Nancy, especially May of 2021. As you may know, she is President of the Bocce Ball Club with over 700 members. Due to COVID, play was suspended last year and as a result, getting back in the groove was chaotic.
As my husband and I get older, we’ve noticed that we can’t seem to spend as much time out in the hot summer weather as we previously enjoyed. We’re approaching our eighties and have tried our best to maintain an active lifestyle. I enjoy gardening, and my husband enjoys playing golf. We both like to swim in our neighborhood pool and have always enjoyed power walking in the mornings. However, last summer, my husband nearly suffered a heat stroke after our usual morning walk.
Letters for the week of June 3.
This month, Cheryl Mauzer posted something unique on the Sun City Wildflower Lake Facebook page: a picture of a beautiful chalk drawing of Lady and the Tramp sharing that classic strand of spaghetti. “I saw this walking this morning; beautiful chalk artwork. N21. Someone sure is talented!”

The ten-question 2021 Sun City Huntley Resident Satisfaction Survey has been published on the Sun City website for all residents to review. This survey was developed by Survey Monkey, an organization that specializes in developing surveys, at the direction of the Sun City Board and the Executive Management team.
For nearly a dozen Sun City residents, piloting a Huntley Community School District 158 school bus means helping students safely reach their destinations. But it also means taking control of their own destinies in a job that puts them in the driver’s seat both literally and figuratively.
At the end of my junior year in high school, my parents moved us from Elmwood Park to Franklin Park. And so, on a Monday afternoon in early May, I suddenly found myself sitting in a classroom in West Leyden High School, having started the day at Elmwood Park High School, clearing out my locker.
In a follow-up to my last column’s story, here is more info on what has led to the catastrophe of Covid-19 numbers and vaccination failures in India and many of the earth’s poorer countries, including China.
Whether they were small, local races or major marathons, Covid cancelled them. But some of the favorite races have gone virtual. Joan Davis recently participated in a virtual run.

As of July 16, there will be only eight banks on Illinois Route 47 in Huntley. The PNC Bank branch at the south end of Huntley is closing then.
With as many streaming services out there, there is no lack of entertaining content. Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max; should we need yet another? Well, the last one we would expect is one from the company who redefined the phone and the watch.
