MY SUN DAY NEWS
McHenry County has created a webpage for residents facing challenges in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Sun City residents are earning a grand slam this softball season, even though current games are cancelled.
Chuck Hund, President of Sun City Softball, highlighted their club effort during this Conavid-19 crisis, reaching out to help others in our community.
Coronavirus has caused a myriad of adjustments in our daily lives from federal, state, and local governmental action and from health officials. The biggest adjustments seem to be shelter in place and six feet of separation. Not only are adjustments made but we’re finding heroes in our fight against COVID-19.
What can I use to clean the inside wall of a gas fireplace?
With age, it seems, comes self-awareness. We become aware of our strengths as well as our weaknesses. Our likes become more apparent as well as our dislikes. Our ability to verbalize what we need to feel comfortable, even happy, may also grow with time. Control. I have come to realize for me to feel comfortable, it often boils down to control. A calendar that is filled with professional and personal obligations make me happy.
I am a very concerned daughter who is worried about her mother. My mom, 68 years, has been on self-quarantine since COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic. I unfortunately live states away. My sister lives nearby, but because she continues to work in the hospital setting, she has chosen not to visit our mother during this crisis. My mom is used to spending a lot of time with my sister and her family throughout the week. She feels cut off and isolated.
Letters for the week of April 9.
As news about the coronavirus becomes widespread, it can be easy to become lost in the sea of information which in turn may lead some to panic. In these times of crisis, Huntley Chief of Police, Robert Porter, ensures that Huntley is taking a “common sense but prepared approach,” in an effort to keep local residents informed and safe.
While the present threat to our health and well-being is serious and needs to be taken with the utmost care, caution, and regard, our entire economic system is under the greatest strain any of us have seen in our lifetimes, which poses a very serious threat in itself to us all. Just like we need to heed our orders of quarantine and social distancing, we all need to do what we can to keep our economy safe and healthy, too.
A few days ago, on one of the first days of social distancing, I saw a quote on Instagram that read, “When the Great Plague of London was going around in 1665, Cambridge University shut down and Isaac Newton was forced to stay home. During this time, he invented calculus, parts of optic theory and allegedly, while sitting in his garden, he saw an apple fall from a tree that inspired his understanding of gravity and the laws of motion.” I liked the positivity and energy of that thought (no pressure intended – we aren’t all going to win Nobel Prizes for what we do in this quarantined time. And that’s okay).

Have you ever seen a cat go after a laser dot? That’s news media across the world right now. Coronavirus is the dot and news media is the cat, and everywhere the dot pops up, they pounce. Don’t laugh too hard because this is us, too. Only when applied to us, the news is the dot and we’re the cats, and in our crazed efforts to “catch the dot,” we’re knocking over tables and chairs and pulling down curtains and breaking our mother’s good China and relieving grocery stores of their inventories.
How are Sun City Residents practicing social distancing due to COVID-19? Some Sun City residents answered that they are using the opportunity to spring clean.
When the calendar switched over to 2020, I, like many other college students nationwide, promptly forgot what year it was and started dating all my papers as if it was still 2019. An easy enough mistake to make, when it’s easily correctable with the backspace button and the only documents affected are your English papers. When it comes to papers of more bearing, such as checks, the consequences can be more dire, and this year more than ever.
The Del Webb residential community in Huntley has a history of enduring not only medical crises, but wars and recessions. They are survivors and they lead the way in presenting a tough exterior for whatever comes into focus from the media spotlight. Now the focus is on coronavirus, known as COVID-19 and what is called the protocol of social distancing.
Leave it to a lawyer to turn a party into a “party of the first part.” Call me old-fashioned, but I think it would kill the mood if I was a young guy on a hot date that started getting pretty steamy, but before any garments hit the floor I had to run to my filing cabinet to pull out another “copulation consent form” for my panting partner to sign.

This is a very stressful time for everyone, due to the Corona Virus outbreak. Nancy even stopped drinking Corona beer!!! Our editor, Chris LaPelusa, gave us the option of suspending our column or reviewing take-out/delivery. We feel we have an obligation to our loyal readers, so as the saying goes, “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead,” but don’t spare the hand sanitizer.
A world pandemic health crisis can promote 5 common reactions.
A friend of mine (Janie) and her husband (Bill) live in Seattle. They enjoyed a 3-week vacation in Italy and Greece and agreed to share their adventure. This is Part 2 of that journey with their next stop on their cruise from Greece to Turkey.
With the order from Governor JB Pritzker now in full effect, Illinois residents have been mandated to stay in their homes for all but the most essential of trips, effectively quarantining 12.6 million in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Organizations like the McHenry County chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and the Samaritan Counseling Center of the Northwest Suburbs (SCC), have been at the front lines in destigmatizing mental illnesses, and improving the lives of those afflicted by them, for decades.

My elderly mother, 82 years, has been living independently in her home since my dad, her husband, passed away nearly ten years ago. I’m fortunate that she lives across town from me, but I can’t always pop in as often as I’d like to see her. Although she insists she’s fine, I worry about her.
Sun City resident Kathy Boyce never imagined her once small celebration of a common Polish tradition would grow into a much larger and highly anticipated annual event. For those unfamiliar, paczki are a must-have decadent treat commonly eaten on Fat Tuesday in America, the day before Lent begins. This Polish tradition of indulging in these round, sugar-filled pastries, has been around since the Middle Ages and has only continued to grow in popularity as more and more people get hooked on these delicious fried dough desserts.

Many years ago, I wrote a column as a refresher course on the Sun Day’s content because there was some confusion circulating over its, for lack of a better word, “definition,” and it was perceived that all the material published in the Sun Day was “news.” Which is an understandable mistake because it’s a “newspaper,” after all. What would you expect to find in a newspaper? Baking recipes? Well, yes, baking recipes are commonplace in newspapers, especially around holidays, but you get my point. Newspapers print news. But not all news is news. Makes sense, right? Thought not.

You may have read in the last edition Dwight Esau’s letter to readers about his retirement from the Sun Day. Hopefully, you read it. It was superbly written, genuine, and heartfelt…heartfelt for me, at least, and I wanted to salute Dwight and his career with the Sun Day with a formal, public goodbye addressed to you readers.
Have you decided yet on whether the McHenry County Coroner should remain as an elected position or be appointed as a full-time medical examiner? The good news is that you have a little more than eight months to decide.
I don’t go to Hobby Lobby very often, but I did this week—twice. The first time was a few days ago, when I picked up a few gadgets for my friend’s grandson, who had recently undergone serious spinal surgery in Chicago. Vincent will be spending a lot of time healing flat on his back, so I wanted to give him some things to take his mind off the boredom.

Both infectious respiratory diseases with similar symptoms, the COVID-19 and the flu virus can appear to be similar, but are the result of different viruses. Here are similarities and contrasts between the two high impacting illnesses now spreading throughout parts of the U.S. and the world. The source of this info is Dr. Lisa Maragakis of John Hopkins Medicine.
April 1, also observed as Census Day nationwide, will mark the twenty-fourth time the United States has conducted the practice of counting the population since 1790. A practice that is done every 10 years, the Census has been a key component in determining congressional representation, funds for communities used for a variety of different services, and more.

When Chris, my husband, and I first started dating I had the opportunity to not only get to know him, but also his parents. I received a front row seat to a lifestyle that was completely unfamiliar to me.
Your garbage disposal will grind up and pass down your drain most of the food waste you put into it, but there are a few items that should never go into it. Egg shells can cause a blockage in the disposal and in the drain. Never put them into your disposal. Celery has tough fiber strands that can wrap around the moving parts of the disposal and make it malfunction.
