MY SUN DAY NEWS
During the midday hours of November 1, a robber struck a home in Sun City Neighborhood 31. Police were called to the 13700 block of White Oak Road shortly after 2 p.m. that afternoon in response to the robbery, which occurred at some point between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The Train Club will open its traditional Holiday Train Display on Friday, November 22, 2019, the Friday before Thanksgiving.
Reader’s Digest’s (May, 2019) “Get the Sleep You Need” Article by Samantha Rideout and Corey Whelan gives us strategies for developing consistently good sleep habits. Are you aware that, besides the terrible feeling of sleep tiredness, continued sleep deprivation can lead to depression, diabetes, stroke, obesity, Alzheimer’s disease, heart attack, and cancer?
I left the theatre, adrenalin flowing after watching some of the most scintillating car racing scenes ever on screen, jumped into my four cylinder Subaru and raced home at five miles an hour over the speed limit. Its’ been seven hours since I left the cinema and my heart is still pumping as I think about what I saw.
Restaurants come and go, and that is why we have been writing this column for seven years, and have never repeated a restaurant. There is a relatively new restaurant on Randall Road, which took the place of a barbecue restaurant which was obviously not as “famous” as they would have hoped to have been.
For the past fifty-five years, my elderly parents have always hosted a large Thanksgiving family dinner. Including everyone, there are over four nuclear families represented and nearly forty people in total. Everyone looks forward to this event and everyone chips in something, regardless of my mom’s insistence to take care of it all.

Do you know that socks are the most requested item by homeless shelters? And they are also the least donated item. For most, clean socks are not given a second thought. But for the homeless, having a clean pair of socks provides warmth and comfort, protecting skin from infections.

Although everyone knows that the current season is called autumn or fall (or “spooky season,” if you’re really in the know), it seems like it really should be called Pumpkin Spice Season. People love autumn for a plethora of reasons, but lately, the only one that seems to matter is the fact that pumpkin spice can be found anywhere. In fact, Starbucks launched a campaign this year declaring the first day of fall to be August 27, which was the day they brought back the beloved Pumpkin Spice Latte (or PSL).
By now, most Sun Citians are aware that Steve Bytnar, Russ Howard, and Bob Wainscott were re-elected to the Sun City board of directors starting in 2020.
As frightening as it is to imagine a madman with an assault weapon targeting indiscriminate victims, it is even more harrowing to imagine a weapon like that in the hands of a madman who views himself as a patriot. Someone, for example, like major league umpire Rob Drake, who on October 22 tweeted this threat: “I will be buying an AR-15 tomorrow, because if you impeach MY PRESIDENT this way, YOU WILL HAVE ANOTHER CIVAL WAR!!! #MAGA2020.”

Winning an NFL title does not look promising for the Chicago Bears this season. Yet in the eyes of local military veterans, the Bears are already the champs though the season is a long way from over. What has led to such optimism in the Bears fortunes is the enthusiasm over a tremendous display of charity. The Chicago Bears Foundation has chosen Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans (MSHV) to receive a $100,000 grant as part of the Bears celebration of their 100th season.

The first skirmish in the village-landowners legal fight over the future of the Huntley Outlet mall site was held October 17. After more than an hour of animated conversation among lawyers representing the Village of Huntley and the Huntley Investment Group landowners, the result was expected: McHenry County Judge Kevin Costello denied the village’s request to quash the landowners lawsuit against the village.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to participate in a medical study examining the effectiveness and safety of a test or treatment being considered to help a certain group of people? I recently interviewed a local senior who joined a study whose underlying purpose is to determine the effects of diet upon cognitive ability. He will remain anonymous, as will the study’s name, due to the confidentiality of the project and the length of the ongoing clinical trial with results still to be determined.
The criminal justice system continues to take its time and very deliberately determine the future of Jennifer Lupo, former member of the Sun City finance department.
HUNTLEY – Six inches of snow fell in Huntley on Thursday and Friday, and the school’s groundskeepers had to shovel a lot of white stuff off the field and onto the running track surrounding the field. Temperatures fell to freezing and lower by Saturday. Game-time temperature was 40 degrees with a strong wind blowing on Saturday.
A long-running series of voting snafus led McHenry County board chairman Jack Franks and state representative David McSweeney to ask Joe Tirio, the county clerk and recorder, to request election monitoring for the 2020 primary and general elections.
In every sense a hero, Bob “Doc” Adams of Winfield, Illinois will finally receive hero status from the U.S. Military.
You may or may not find this hard to believe, but every so often the Dining Duo needs a “mental health day.” If there ever were two people in need of a mental health adjustment, it’s us two idiots. Our favorite diversion is to drive up north to the land of cheese, and contribute to the Ho-Chunk Indian tribe at the casino in Wisconsin Dells. This trip is punctuated by various scenic stops along the way. Our first stop is fueling up our bodies at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant in Rockford.
A combination of a publication break and some personal travel plans conspired to keep me away from the movie theater in time for this edition of the Sun Day. So, I thought I would take an early look at the year in movies so far.
The butterfly population in Northern Illinois is growing! It was recently reported on the radio that volunteers who spend time monitoring butterflies on public lands had seen an increase in butterflies this summer compared to previous years. While of course, I am thrilled that the efforts to support the butterfly population are working, I am more interested in the volunteers and their efforts.
Mary pulled a kitchen knife on her father. She couldn’t think of any other way to stop him from choking her mother. Mary doesn’t remember how she rationalized her action almost 30 years ago but she recalled going to school the next day. She aced her math test and put on the perfect smile. “No one else outside the walls of my home suspected anything. After all, how could the girl with straight A’s and awards for citizenship, leadership, and perfect attendance raise suspicion of a problem at home,” Mary said.

With Veteran’s Day approaching, I struggle each year on how to teach the significance of the day to my teenaged children. My dad, their grandfather, served in the military. He lives locally, so we usually take him out to dinner or stop by his home for a visit on Veteran’s Day. While I think he appreciates my intentions, I feel like I’m not doing enough to educate my children and to show our sincere appreciation for his service.
We have an original Del Webb, 2-lamp, kitchen ceiling fluorescent fixture that is flickering and hesitant to light up. The bulbs have been replaced with no effect. I believe it is the ballast that is dying. We also have several older 4-lamp fixtures in basement that are acting up too. Can you recommend a local electrical handyman that can repair fluorescent fixtures?

A Frank Sinatra band, a magic show, and an ice cream sundae bar are just a few of the commodities that residents were treated to in this open floor celebration to commemorate Sun City’s 20 years of commitment to offering a lifestyle of dreams.
My wife and I are big returners. If we don’t like it (whatever it is) or if it’s broken, we return it, putting 100% satisfaction guarantees to the test wherever products are sold. After years of making returns, I’ve discovered that some stores are much more receptive to returns than others. Some stores take back their item with the same smile as when they sold it while other stores make you second guess your motives and feel like a criminal.
On September 25, the Sun City Board of Directors voted tentatively to assess community residents with a larger bill for 2020, but only a very small one.
October 1 marked a momentous occasion for Huntley school district 158 (Huntley 158). After many months of deliberation, the much-anticipated solar panel installation project was approved for construction on three Huntley 158 campuses, celebrated through a small ceremony involving school and public officials.
