MY SUN DAY NEWS
When I read that PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) urged all Americans to be a little more sensitive with our animal metaphors by banning phrases like “bringing home the bacon,” or “your goose is cooked,” I reacted as I think any sensitive American would.
There may be a hotel in Huntley’s future after all. If a proposal now before the village board actually happens, it may bring a new roadway to the village along with it.
Because (as of September 2019) adult obesity rates have reached 31.8% in Illinois alone, I have found it necessary in my past 3 health articles, to assume the topic of popular U.S. weight loss diets. Joining the Fasting, Keto, and Paleo diets in this issue is the Portion Control Diet. Perhaps the easiest to follow of the four dieting lifestyles, the Portion Control Diet, for the most part, can be adapted to your own way of eating, provided you make healthy choices.
The Sun City Theatre Company takes to the stage this fall for the musical, Kiss Me Kate, based on William Shakespeare’s comedy, The Taming of the Shrew, set to music and lyrics by Cole Porter.
Halloween is celebrated most places, and Sun City is no exception. Driving through the streets of Sun City, a few homes are adorned with orange lights glowing brightly. Some Halloween lover’s yards are packed with pumpkins, scarecrows, jack-o-lanterns, ghosts, and cornstalks. But the best symbols of the feast can be found inside homes in Sun City.

Prior to the Dining Duo moving to the friendly confines of Sun City Del Webb Huntley, most of our marital bliss was spent in Hoffman Estates. As a result, we seem to find ourselves returning there for various reasons like doctors, stores, restaurants, etc. While driving down Roselle Road in Schaumburg, a storefront caught Nancy’s eye.
Front Storm Door on a Petoskey. Don’t have a key for it. Do you know how/who can remedy this without installing a new lockset?
Judy Garland died in 1969 when she was only 47 years old, a victim of the pills and alcohol she used constantly during her tumultuous life. And while she is gone, her memory will be with us forever, as generation after generation watch her walk down the yellow brick road, accompanied by her strange assortment of friends and her little dog Toto.
Fall, for many, is the most favorite season. Favorite fall activities include going to pumpkin patches with family members, Christmas shopping at craft fairs, and of course taking a few moments to admire the gorgeous fall colors exhibited by our natural environs.
My elderly mom has been showing some signs of dementia in the last year. She lives alone and prefers to keep to herself. While she lives in a decent neighborhood and knows her immediate next-door neighbors, I worry about her on Halloween. She loves the holiday, always made our costumes as kids, still helps to make her grandchildren’s costumes. She gets such joy from giving candy to the trick-or-treaters and seeing them in costumes.
In the lead-up to the April 2020 Census, McHenry County is hosting a series of public meetings designed to educate citizens and ensure that the county’s population is accurately counted. The Ad Hoc McHenry County Complete Count Committee is co-chaired by Michael Vijuk, a McHenry County board member for District 1, and Brian Sager, the Mayor of Woodstock.

In previous years, if I had spotted a spider on my wall or heard a fly buzz in some corner of my room, I knew it was time for an all-out war. There was no resting until that bug was vanquished, usually with the help of at least one housemate, an old Starbucks cup for trapping, and an elaborate system of commands (“You guard the door, and I’ll go in for the kill”). If I lost the battle, losing track of the bug, there was a non-negotiable consequence: that room was no longer habitable.
I really don’t think I felt all that old when my great-granddaughter, Anastasia, was born last September. Oh, sure, there were all those “great-grandpa” jokes everybody thought were so funny, but among all the other emotions flooding through me — pride, joy, love, wonderment — I think “old” was curiously absent. But things change.

The funniest thing happened in the Sun City election on Sept. 18 – a major board candidate forum was scheduled and a quiet little neighborhood chat broke out. The forum was set up for 4 p.m., and was adjourned by 2 p.m.
Some people dream big dreams far into the future, but don’t combine them with practical planning. Barb Lincoln put the dreams and plans together, and now, it’s all coming true. Her 26-year-old hopes are coming into reality.

Retirement brings a lifestyle change. For some that involves more leisure activities, and for others like Mary Merrell, it means continuing her efforts to serve the community. However, Merrell’s story extends far beyond volunteering for multiple great causes. Although at times having to deal with the occasional rocky path in life, Merrell’s remarkable spirit and passion has led to some equally as outstanding achievements.

This diet was developed by Loren Cordain, PhD, a researcher at Colorado State University, who began studies in the 1970s. According to Dr. Cordain, the Paleo diet is the way humans were initially genetically designed to eat.
Business activity, new and old, continues to hum along with authority in Huntley. Gathering data on new and existing businesses reveals more than a dozen changing locations in business parks, industrial sites, and commercial districts.

My mom and I enjoyed watching my daughter participate in cross country meets throughout her middle school and high school years. After the start of the race was announced we would yell ‘Go Sarah’ repeatedly until she was out of site. We would then anxiously pace around, silently willing her on as she battled heat, other runners, uneven running surfaces and hills. After about 20 minutes, we would see her approaching the finish line.
Several Woodchucks have reported hearing a humming noise in their house that was hard to pin point. Some thought it was electrical while others thought it was in the plumbing. With some careful questioning and a little experimenting, we were able to identify the problem. The hum went away in each case when a faucet was turned on in the house. The problem was a faulty flapper valve in the toilet tank. Don’t panic, if you can make toast you can repair this problem in fifteen minutes with no tools.
The review of Ad Asta starts a little further down. First and foremost I need to tell you about the greatest piece of entertainment I have ever seen, hands down, or thumbs up whichever you prefer. I am talking about the PBS TV production of Country Music, an eight part series produced by Ken Burns. I’m not necessarily a country music fan, but this historical look at the beginning and evolution of that genre, absolutely mesmerized me.
Promise Gardens have bloomed all over Chicagoland in vibrant colors of orange, blue, yellow, and purple. However, this is not the type of garden growing in your backyard. The flowers are the symbols of The Walk to End Alzheimer’s. On the morning of October 6, hundreds of people in the northwest suburbs will gather at Lippold Park on Route 176 in Crystal Lake. They’ll walk two miles at 10 a.m. after a very emotional ceremony. What you’ll see should you either participate or watch for the incredible spectacle is a sea of purple. Most if not all of the participants will wear purple T-shirts with this message, “Together We Can End Alzheimer’s.” Some will hold their Promise Garden flowers; others will plant their flowers in the Promise Garden.

Nancy and I were sitting in our screened in porch the other day smoking cigars – yes, Nancy smokes them too. We looked around and noticed the season is now changing to fall. The leaves are turning brown, just like Nancy’s roots, and there was a chill in the air, much like the look I just got from Nancy. Being the Dining Duo, our thoughts immediately turned to Octoberfest and German food. After one last puff on our cigars, and with our stomach’s growling, we headed off to Checkers II in Union.
The 2020 U.S. Census will not contain a question on citizenship, but is this enough to engage the Latino population? This is just one of the questions that face the McHenry County Complete Count Committee in striving for a complete count.
Woodstock Mayor Brian Sager was every bit a coach at the McHenry County Administration Building where he urged his “team” to be the best county in the nation for the percentage of residents filling out the 2020 U.S. Census. Sager spoke to a group of local government leaders, business leaders, not-for-profit agencies and residents.
Letters for the week of October 3.
My teenaged son was over at my parents’ house visiting when he called me in a panic. My mom had mistaken the glass that contained her Efferdent denture cleaning for her glass of Alka-Seltzer and drank it. Both were tablets that fizzed, and she had put them side by side on the kitchen counter. My son didn’t know what to do, so I quickly called poison control.
Nick Koplos was asked to help pick tomatoes, at the age of 5, on his family’s Des Plaines vegetable farm. Now 83 years later, Nick (with a work ethic established early in life) yearly tends to his own double farm plot here in our community.
You’ve seen him with his classic rock band, OLD’S COOL, but you’ve never seen him like this. Friday night, Oct 4, TR Kerth will play a solo acoustic show on guitar and harmonica at Lucky Bernie’s in Huntley, from 7-9 p.m. The performance will feature songs that span many styles and generations, including folk, pop, rock, blues, country, Irish, reggae–and even a few quirky originals spawned from the mind of TR Kerth.

Dick and Cathie Livengood started teaching for Huntley Community School District 158 in 2005, beginning their fourteenth year of classes this autumn. It’s an impressive feat made more impressive considering they’ve been retired the entire time. The Sun City couple serves as substitute teachers, and with the district’s close proximity to their home, they find it easy to teach classes they love.
