I went in today for my bi-annual dental cleaning. (Or semi-annual? Bi-sex-monthial? I don’t know. I go in every six months — you do the Latin.) Anyway, the deal went down the way it always does — Sue, the dental hygienist, asks me to open my yap, and after taking a gander she says: “Wow, wisdom teeth!”

Besides setting your biological clocks for the same time each night for sleep and the same time each morning to awaken, what else establishes a comfortable slumber environment in your house? For sure, dimmed lighting in a cooled temperature bedroom with a comfortable mattress and multiple pillows is critical for good sleep habits, the kind that establish deep-sleep rhythms.
The third annual veterans softball game is an event planned to honor all Sun City Veterans. Glenn Groebli began the tradition in 2016.
“I want all Sun City Veterans this year to come out to the game on June 29. We want not only to recognize our softball veterans but all of the Sun City Veterans. I am asking that they just come. Show up at the 3rd base dugout at 2:30,” he said.
Over 70 Tall Oaks Tennis Club (TOTC) members, past and present, met at the courts on Sunday, May 26. Members were checked in and given their court rotation for the afternoon. Esther Skeggs, president of the TOTC, welcomed the participants for the afternoon. Cathleen and Richard Chay warmed everyone up on the stadium court with some yoga. Prince (aka Lou Gagliano) helped open the 1999 party.

The Drendel Ballroom filled with residents and guests to enjoy the music of their youth. The tribute was advertised as: “No stranger to the tribute world, Jay Gates impersonation of Barry Manilow has ‘Fanilows’ agreeing that this act is rapidly becoming ‘the’ show to see! Be it the classic ‘Copacabana’ or the sing-along ‘Can’t Smile Without You’ or the show-stopping ‘Even Now,’ Jay’s Faithful representation of Barry’s voice, combined with a jaw-dropping visual portrayal and multi-media presentation, always leaves audiences wanting more!”

Several years ago Annamarie and I left the confines of our home and headed for a warmer climate so we could thaw out for a few weeks. All well and good. We left Illinois on February 19th, at which time it was still Central Standard Time. Along the way we crossed into the Eastern Standard Time zone, which means we lose an hour, so when the clock now says it’s 4 P.M., my body still thinks it’s 3 P.M., which I guess isn’t that big of a deal.

How does one fully encapsulate a life in two hours? I am completely baffled as to how to work that out properly. All the many nuances that make up one’s experience, what do you leave in and how do you remove the rest? Then you have to add music onto that, to boot. Some musical biopics hit the mark while others just fall into the same clichés that would you would find in a Behind the Music television special. “Rocketman” splits the difference.
Spring is in the air, tra-la, tra-la. Nancy’s mind turns to thoughts of . . . landscaping. She gave me a reprieve for the last two years due to my bionic knee and hip replacements. As a result, all of our perennials somehow turned into annuals. It was now time for me to pay the piper. We took a ride to our local nursery and began looking in the “no watering required and impossible to kill” plant section. After hundreds, and hundreds, and hundreds of dollars spent on “supposed” perennials, and a must have concrete smiley face sculpture for another couple hundred dollars, the two of us and our wallets were both running on empty. In keeping with the garden theme, we decided to have lunch at Lily Garden Restaurant in Lake in the Hills.

Higgins explains, “In the fall of 2014, my wife got me a Father’s Day gift for a four-day cycling wine trip in California. I had a conflict with a real estate closing that was scheduled for the same time. I approached the client, Steve Lattimer, to extend the closing to October and explained the situation. Steve focused on the word, ‘cycling.’ He asked me if I did much cycling. When I responded that I did, he agreed to extend the closing only if I agreed to ride in the Tri-State Trek. And that was the start of it.”

The Anglers have an interesting history. “Bob Ward our past president, and current Board member has been researching our club history,” said Randy Johnson. “He has a committee that has done considerable work in discovering our roots. Bob is a long-time resident of Dell Webb, and been involved with the Anglers for over a decade.” While their history might have been unclear at the start, it’s anything but fishy.

We know that dementia causes irreversible, progressive and ultimately fatal cognitive decline. It doesn’t just affect memory but also impairs the executive (decision-making) function, learning, language, and basic movements such as swallowing and walking. Keeping this in mind, it is no wonder that caregivers are in great demand today.

The Sun City Strutters are back for their annual performance, dancing their way through music of the 30s, 40s, and 50s with lively tap, ballet, and jazz dance routines. The group is comprised of Sun City residents ranging in age from 50 to 80+ who share the mutual love of dance. Performances will feature special guest vocalists Sara Tustin and Ray Thomas. The Strutters’ 16th anniversary performance, “Life is a Cabaret,” comes to Drendel Ballroom on Wednesday, June 12, then to the Huntley High School Performing Arts Center on Saturday, June 15.

The Del Web Fitness Center is now offering a new class called PSE Stretch. It is being offered at both Fountain View and Meadow View Lodges. PSE stands for Positive Serene Experience created by its instructor, Jeanne Silvis.
The Stingrays’ Swim Club held their 7th Annual Charity Auction on Saturday, April 27. This year’s party was hosted at the home of Terry and Linda Hora with Roseann Losasso and Joanie Koplos serving as auctioneers. The afternoon’s festivities raised a total of $1717, which was divided amongst the club and their two chosen charities: Huntley’s Animal House Shelter and the National Down Syndrome Society.

The late great Jack Lemmon is noted for popularizing the phrase “Dying is easy, comedy is hard.” Although the epithet is older than him, the reasoning behind it still rings true. Humor is truly subjective to the viewer with no control by the person performing. And much like Seth Rogen, humor has taken a beating.
Two of our friends who were recently married asked us to join them for dinner one Friday night. They were a very interesting couple. She is from the good ole U. S. of A, and he is from the U.K., but we won’t hold that against him. They met while he was a tour guide in London, and she was vacationing there. It was a match made in heaven, he is British and she is a dentist. Since they live in Talamore, and we live in Del Webb, we met them for dinner at the Montarra Grill in Algonquin.
