MY SUN DAY NEWS
Blame it on the Christmas season — and then the long, dark winter nights in the weeks that follow — but I always get a bit nostalgic about those great days of my childhood.
A “hotline” phone number has been created for dissemination of important information such as Attached Product Neighborhood (APN) snow removal services and cancellation of outdoor events due to unfavorable weather conditions.
One of the Woodchucks had a problem with the light bulb in his garage door opener. He was able to diagnose the problem and repair it. Here is his solution.
If any of you have seen Jim walking around Del Webb lately, he looks like Chester from the old Gunsmoke TV show. He’s been limping along for the past year, but his time is running out. Today is his last visit when the doctor can use his knee like a Voo Doo doll and sticks needles in it with various drugs to stop the pain.
My aunt lives in an assisted living community, but we learned she cannot continue living there because she will be running out of money. What options does she have?
As I commented in my last column, we are in the “death valley” days of new movie releases. Last weekend there were two new films out, one was Black Panther, the newest super-hero on the scene. Despite plenty of accolades from the highly paid professional movie critics, this was not my cup of tea, and (I could be wrong) probably not for most of the Sun Day News readers either. The other was Samson, a remake of the biblical story. After seeing the trailers on TV, I’m not sure anyone would pay to see it, certainly not me.
It was a familiar storefront for over 14 years. The Hallmark store sat next to Jewel on Route 47 in Huntley. Later, the storeowners abandoned the Hallmark brand and brought in “A New Dawn Boutique” last July. But on January 31, the boutique closed its doors.

Clare Schellerer knows United States National Champion Pairs Figure Skater Alexa Scimeca better than one might think. That’s because Scimeca, who will represent the United States at the 2018 Winter Olympics, is Schellerer’s granddaughter.
I’ve come to realization that living with a one year old is like living with The Three Stooges. Just the other day, my son knocked over my coffee (sending the coffee onto my keyboard and under my monitor), slammed my fingers in a desk drawer, and poked me in the eye. He did this literally consecutively, one hit after the other.
After 2018, maintenance and repair spending by the Sun City Community Association will wind down. This year will be the last one that involves major spending.
Wall Street Journal’s January 6-7, 2018 publication of “We Can Encourage Our Better Angels” is full of moral reminders that can aid in our very own promotion of helping others and doing the right thing morally to make this a better world.
“I can’t tell you how much we appreciate you being here,” said Scott Iddings, Leggee School Principal. Iddings explained just how much help is needed in the school. The tasks start at the beginning of the year, getting kindergarten students off the bus and into the classroom.” Sara Dubose, a kindergarten teacher, said of the volunteers, “You are true angels in the building.”

OK, I’ve made my New Year’s resolution. Oh, I know, New Year’s resolutions are supposed to start in the early hours of January when the year is still new. I can hear you smirking at me for taking this long to get around to it.

One summer day, a couple of years ago, Sun Citian Fred Dryden received a call from the Huntley Police Department. He was asked to assist police officers in a search for a missing elderly lady in the community. He also was asked to recruit some friends to assist him in the activity. He rounded up three friends and reported for “duty.”

Here we go another time. Two years ago and then again last year I complained about the lack of decent new releases hitting the theaters this time of year. Perhaps a columnist from the Los Angeles Times described it best, “For decades, spring was largely considered a kind of dead zone in Hollywood’s release calendar, an island of cinematic misfit toys lacking a coherent identity or much inherent appeal for film distributors. In everyone’s minds there’s the holiday season, there’s awards seasons, there’s the summer movie season – and then there’s spring.”
Jim’s arms were getting too short for him to read anything, and the adhesive tape wasn’t holding his broken glasses anymore, so off we went to Spring Hill Mall to remedy the situation. His vision was impaired with his old prescription eyeglasses, but isn’t it funny how he could spot a restaurant from a mile away??? The name piqued our interest, so we decided to try the Chubby Bullfrog Bar & Grill (next to Sears) in West Dundee.

In ancient Babylon, the citizens used to view January first as a day to make promises to their gods, agreeing to pay off their debts and return what they had borrowed throughout the year. In Rome, around the time of 46 B.C., the Romans recognized January as a time to provide scarifies to their gods and vow to behave better in the upcoming year. In 1740 England, clergyman John Wesley led Christians to welcome the new year with focus and prayer.
Almost a year since the car-house accident, the Donald Helfer case was finally resolved on January 11.
A group of Sun City residents and the community’s board of directors got a good reminder on January 10 why there are always an odd number of members on a governing board.
Without trying to be too redundant, I would like to follow-up on Christine Such’s January 11 column on New Year’s Resolutions.
Another Christmas has come and gone, with not a single lump of coal at the bottom of my Christmas stocking! To be honest, that may or may not be a testament to my good-boy status over the past year, because I don’t know where Santa would find a lump of coal these days, even if he felt my behavior warranted it. Does Amazon deliver coal to the North Pole?
