Santa Claus may love cookies and milk, but he also enjoys a hearty breakfast, it seems! The festive feast with Santa in Drendel Ballroom, catered by Jamesons, included scrambled eggs, French toast, waffles, sausage and bacon, breakfast potatoes, mini muffins, mini danish, fresh fruit, and an array of drinks.
With the continuation of the holiday season and its multiple ensuing social interaction occurrences, here is some health info for now and into our new year. Two food science and food microbiologists have exploded myths about what is and isn’t safe in the controlling of harmful bacteria, especially in our use of food items.
Paul Dawson and Brian Sheldon, in their Wall Street Journal article, explain, “It turns out that many of the things we do to keep ourselves safe from harmful bacteria just make the problem worse.”
Another year and 23 restaurants bite the dust. This was a tough year to review restaurants since we had a run of mediocre venues. Jim and I sat down, locked ourselves in our office, and tried to pick the best 10 restaurants by pondering over the reviews we did last year. “Pondering” is such an understatement; it was more like yelling, screaming, biting, and kicking.
The holidays come and go, and always make me feel a little blue and often I find it hard to get out of the slump. I’m sure I’m not alone with these emotions. What do people do to get through the season, which is supposed to be festive?
Last year there was a plethora of good or great films hitting the theaters around this time of year. Some of the best included The Man Who Invented Christmas, The Post, The Darkest Hour, and The Greatest Showman. Included in that time frame was The Shape of Water, undoubtedly one of the five worst films in history, and of course it won the Oscar for best movie.
Sun City Woodchucks Ray Harris, John Sterling, Jim Moran, Ed Cutler, Al LaPelusa and Ken Szymura delivered beautifully hand crafted toys for Christmas presents for the children of Food Pantry families.

The Sew n Sews seem far from just “so and sos,” and Darlene Hagner is no exception. She shares her talents with others not only by the quilts she makes and donates, but also by teaching classes and assisting members one on one. She is a familiar face at the club’s workroom. Karen Semancik said, “I joined Sew n Sews and started signing up for classes. Members freely volunteer their time to teach other members various skills. My first class instructor was Darlene Hagner. I was so impressed with her willingness to spend however long it would take to have you learn a new technique. She is very generous with her time, encouraging, and patient. I’ve already learned a lot from her, and I’m looking forward to my next class. I feel that she practically lives at the club. She is always there.”

This day includes a champagne brunch, holiday shopping, and performances by the Heartbreakers and Heartzingers (residents of Misericordia). Attendance has gradually risen, according to Kenny.

For the last several years, Sun City has operated on a “steady as you go” basis, with balanced budgets between revenue and expenses, and similar numbers on both sides of the ledger each year. The major news for 2019 is that the community’s budget will require a $2 adjustment increase in monthly assessments per household, from $125 to $127. This comes after a $9 drop per household in 2018 that reflected some cost-cutting.

Sun City’s Prairie Singers will present their 19th annual Christmas concert December 15 at Huntley High School’s performing arts center. The curtain rises at 2 p.m.
Dining out, especially for the winter holidays, has become a growing part of Western culture. From troublesome ingredients to portion size, downsides do exist in regularly dining at restaurants. Mayo Clinic’s October, 2018 Health Letter advises us that “Making a few sensible adjustments in how you eat out can help you maintain a healthy diet even outside of your home.”

I arrived at the theater, settled into my seat with a box of Sno-Caps (a movie is not a movie without them), looked around, and there were five people in attendance. Why so few? Well maybe it was the time, 7:20; maybe it was the venue, AMC Lake in the Hills; maybe it was the weather, cold and miserable; maybe it was the day, a Thursday, or maybe it was the genre, Comedy/ Drama. Or maybe it was the subject matter, a realistic look at the Foster Care system.

My siblings and I all live out of town. Mom lives on her own and is doing fine, but she keeps to herself and sometimes says she feels lonely. She doesn’t like to socialize too much, so we are a little concerned that she is isolating herself. How can we help her have socializing in her life?
We have lived in Sun City since 2006 and each year the sewer clean-out pipe in front of the house has risen a little out of the ground. It is now 14 inches above ground level. Is there any way to get it back down to where it belongs?
Jim officially retired on October 1, and boy is he enjoying his free time. He has spent most of his days touring doctors’ offices staffed by the medical team of Moe, Larry, and Curly, with Shemp being on call. He also visited the hospital, the emergency room, and physical therapists trying to get his new knee and hip play nice together. These truly are the “Golden Years.” We wanted to celebrate the doctors’ decision to let him graduate from a walker to a cane, so we decided to try Good Tequila’s Mexican Grill in Elk Grove Village. Is there such a thing as bad tequila???

After a lifetime of baking for her friends, family, and just because she wanted to, Jeanne baked a Morello cherry pie and submitted it to the Huntley Farmers Market pie bake off earlier this fall. On her first try at pie-baking competition, Jeanne won first prize in the fruit pie category.

There’s a Thanksgiving tradition that my family has never practiced but I’ve always liked and that is the sitting around the Thanksgiving table, and each person takes a turn saying one thing they’re thankful for. I’m sure for the families out there who practice this tradition, you hear things like “I’m thankful for my parents or spouse or friends or children or health.” (Or, in the case of my son, he’d probably say he’s thankful for milk. He loves milk. He drinks a gallon every two days, which may account for why he, at only two, is countertop height.)

Several weeks ago in this space, I suggested that we should all say “Thank you for your service” to teachers, just as we thank military men and women for their service. That column “ignited” a “flood” of reader emails as contradictory as the mixed fire/water metaphor earlier in this sentence. Some agreed with me and dashed out to thank the nearest teacher they could find. Some thought I hadn’t gone far enough, suggesting that we might also shower firefighters and police officers with thanks for their service. And some thought I went too far, arguing that saying “Thank you for your service” to anybody but military personnel would diminish its impact.

Grant Jahr, President of Sun City CyclePaths Bike Club, takes his passion for bicycles with him everywhere. “I am finishing up my second term as president and have been a member of the Bike Club for 11 years,” he said.
