MY SUN DAY NEWS
Ask the average Sun Citian what the most important challenge the community’s board of directors faces, and they will probably say – communication. Late this past spring, the board embarked on a project to improve and expand its communication with those same residents.

Maintenance of common areas has been a big priority of the Sun City board of directors for the last several years, and the beat goes on in 2018.
At Prairie Lodge, a new solarium will be unveiled this month, and flooring in several activity spaces is being upgraded. Over at Meadow View and the Arcadia Condo building, the parking lots are being resurfaced.
For past decades, dermatologists have cautioned individuals to avoid exposure of their skin to the sun. Nevertheless, many of us who swarmed to “the art of sunbathing” in our youths with the desire to look healthier, now find it difficult to break old habits. I, myself, know that outdoor swimming daily can be a most pleasurable experience, in spite of my three scary experiences with skin cancer. For the huge population of Sun City/Huntley, “outdoor water babies,” softball team members, golfers, tennis players, pickleball enthusiasts, hikers, and joggers, I write this article educating all of us as to the researched correct amount and correct strength of sunscreen to one’s body.
On Sunday, July 8, Sun City resident TR Kerth held a memorial for his wife, Gail, who passed away from a massive stroke on Valentine’s Day this February. The “Gathering in Gail’s Garden” was for friends, neighbors, and family to visit the beautiful garden she loved so much and to take home with them a plant, bulb, cutting, seeds, etc… to plant in their own garden to remember her by.
When the weather gets warm and the umpire says “play ball,” the Sun City Softball Club really gets going. Fresh off a successful Salute to Veterans patriotic exhibition on June 30, the Club will present its annual all-star game this Saturday, July 14, at 4 p.m. at Eakin Field.

Every home in Sun City should be equipped with fire extinguishers. The most likely location to have a small fire that you could fight with a fire extinguisher is in the kitchen. However, a grease fire in a pan on the stove should not be blasted with a fire extinguisher. If you do that, you will blow the grease and the fire onto the wall behind the stove and possibly set the whole kitchen on fire.
I had to quit my job so that I could care for my husband, who has early onset dementia. He is doing well but showing signs of irritation and frustration over little things. I know it is the disease, but I find I don’t want to take him with me when I go out because his behavior is unpredictable.
When writing columns, I usually have a purpose in mind. Being a former horticulture teacher, the purpose is usually educational in nature. Sometimes I try to be informative or inspirational, and occasionally I go out on a limb and try to be funny. Today, the column is purely a series of reflections.
The World Cup is in full swing, and the entire planet is excited about “Futbol”, except for the U.S. We call it soccer and consider whatever “da Bears” do to be football. So what better way is there to join in the celebration since Mexico is in the World Cup, but with a dinner at Sammy’s Mexican Grill in Elgin.
The Chain-O-Lakes Eagles RC Club of McHenry Illinois sponsored a special day for the Chicago based Wounded Warriors Project on Saturday June 16. Members of the Eagles pooled their resources and time to create a day of fun and enjoyment for the Wounded Warriors and their families.

“Arsenic and Old Lacehas something for everyone,” said Janette Dennis, the Director of The Theatre Company’s Summer Presentation. “It’s a mystery, comedy, tragedy, historical fiction, romance, drama and farce with a brilliant script.”
Now that I’m a father, I’ve come to realize I have two “No”s. I have a “hard” no and a “soft” no. My son’s now only a year-and-a-half, so I find myself saying “no” to him a lot, but most of the “no”s throughout any given day are “soft” nos: “No, you can’t have a cookie” or “No, we can’t go outside right now” or “No, you can’t type on the keyboard.” The “hard” nos are reserved for those moments of imminent harm, like when you lose sight of your kid and find him at the top of the stairs (when only one second ago they were right by your side.)
Sun City’s newest sport got a major upgrade on June 8. More than 100 residents and community leaders showed up with umbrellas to cut a ribbon (symbolically) at the formerly named Tall Oaks Tennis Center (now renamed Tall Oaks Courts). The occasion was the unveiling of eight new pickleball courts at the center. Because of rain on celebration day, the club held its inaugural event on the new facilities the next day. It was Pickleball 101, demonstrations and practice for Sun City players new to the game of pickleball.

On June 7, the Huntley Police Department conducted 21 underage liquor compliance checks at all of the licensed liquor establishments in the village. Eighteen of the establishments passed the checks by refusing to sell liquor to the underage participant. One of these establishments is Jameson’s Restaurant and Pub, located in Prairie Lodge.

Beverly Kenny has lived in Sun City for almost 11 years. “I love it. I live in the best neighborhood,” she said. A creative person is easy to spot, not only because they have great ideas, but because they work hard. Kenny finds possibilities in every piece of fabric she sees and she is constantly evaluating. And then, she creates.

How do you get from supervising the construction of industrial sewing machines to owning a micro-brewery and tap room in the space of one career? Simple, says Lance Lamb, a Huntley businessman. You think globally, travel extensively, and really like a high-quality beer.

So many languages, so little time, right? Sure, you have those moments when you get upset with yourself for not following through with your plans to learn at least one other language, or maybe even three or four. By this point in your life, you thought, you would be able to take an around-the-world trip and chat with anybody you met.

Did you know that the human brain is quite a modern machine? The living brain stores more info than the Library of Congress. In fact, the brain’s memory holds the storage capacity of 4.7 billion books or 230,000 DVDs. The brain also processes information faster than a computer.
Welcome! ¡Bienvenidos! Willkommen. No matter how you say it, the idea conveyed is the same: ‘Come in and enjoy your time with us.’ What a wonderful thought and feeling.

It’s that time of year again to make improvements and updates on the Village’s infrastructure. Here is a list of just some of the projects taking place in Huntley this summer.
The Winter Games are over in South Korea but will restart in China in 2022. With the past Summer Games of 2008 and now the Winter coming up, there has been a resurgence of visitors to the area. Most expect this to increase over the next few years, so if you want to get ahead of the crowd, now is the time to plan your trip. Herb and Jackie of Del Webb took what they described as “an awesome trip to China in October for 15 days.” They gave such an excellent analysis of their trip, and most of the story is in their own words.

Michael Chrichton was a prolific author; his books have sold over 200 million copies. Arguably one of his best was Jurassic Park, published in 1990, an instant best seller, a book I could not put down, and if you read it you probably couldn’t either.
When I returned from Arizona there was a large pile of crushed rock beside my front porch. I could not think of why someone would pour crushed rock there or what it was for. On closer examination there was a hole under the stoop. It was becoming clear that an animal was carving out a den under the front porch. In removing the gravel I found that 6 five gallon buckets full had been removed from under the front porch. Occasionally over the years, chipmunks had made their homes under the porch but they only removed about two cups of gravel.
When I started caring for my elderly mother, I felt confident that I could be the caregiver she needed me to be. However, I quickly learned that I can’t do it all. I am considering day care or homecare. What is the best way to go?
It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The sun was shining, the birdies were chirping, and the Del Webbers were out walking their fluffy white doggies. What does the Dining Duo do on such a lovely afternoon? I’m glad you asked. We hop into the Mini-Mobile and venture out in search of food. We do have to keep up our strength, you know. It was such a gorgeous day for a drive in the country, and we wanted to go to Ream’s Meat Market in Elburn for some sausages to put on the barbie that evening.
“Do I hear $25? How about $30?” And so it went as Nick Koplos, Master Auctioneer, proceeded over the 6th Annual Stingrays Swim Club Charity Auction, aided by his wife, Joanie Koplos.

It is with deep sadness that I must announce the passing of Jo Bestmann on June 3, 2018. She was a good neighbor, friend and neighborhood NB22 Representative. We will miss her but now she is out of pain.
More than 50 of the players in the Sun City Softball Club are military veterans. At every game in in Sun City’s three softball leagues, they are introduced by name, as athletes. Most of them played in prominent slow-pitch softball leagues in their younger days, especially in Chicago, and some won championships. Some of them are in the sport’s Hall of Fame.

Some things seem to be natural pairs: peanut butter and jelly, Bonnie and Clyde, stars and stripes, “thank you” and “you’re welcome.” No problem here … or is there?
