MY SUN DAY NEWS
“Music and merriment go right together,” according to Ed Richards. This is evident from the very first step into the Richards’ holiday house, known for its extensive holiday happiness.
Several decades ago, my father-in-law came out of a public restroom and said to me with a grim shake of his head: “Whoever put that toilet paper on the roll has no understanding of the laws of physics.”
Huntley, its leaders say, is “The Friendly Village with Country Charm.”
What does that really mean?
“Father Time” for the year 2017 is getting old and wrinkled, just like most of us here in Del Webb, with the exception of Nancy. I better say that because my back can’t take sleeping on the couch anymore at my age. Another 23 restaurants, and several inches added on to our waistline, brings us to our annual “Best Of” article. So sit back, relax, get your reading glasses and antacids ready, ’cause here we go… All restaurants are handicap accessible.
According to our nation’s leaders, opioid abuse has now reached an epidemic level in our country, especially among younger Americans. However, most of us are unaware of the opioid abuse and dependence (often unintentionally) being discovered among older U.S. adults, as well.
I simply do not do well with mice. Some of the scariest moments of my life have involved an animal that is no bigger than 4”, but has the ability to turn me from relatively calm to screaming, swearing and running at a moment’s notice. My kids learned this lesson when they were very young. Sarah, aged 3, was forced to pick up a stick and say “I’ll protect you Mommy” after a mouse nest was discovered on our deck.
My father has Alzheimer’s and doesn’t sleep very well at night as well as wanders now and then. Since the time change, it seems to have gotten worse. Is there anything we can do to help this situation?
Keurig coffee makers will make single cups of coffee easily, quickly and with no cleanup, but they do occasionally need a simple tune up. If your Keurig is brewing slowly, shorting your cup, or won’t work at all, don’t throw it away until you’ve tried these tips first.
This is our last publication of the year, and due to a scheduling issue my next column will not be published until the January 25 edition. During that time, there will be some “highly anticipated” films making their appearance, with of course no assurance they will live up to the hype preceding them, which sadly is often the case.
Joe Nitti knows how to entertain. “I can do the Fox Trot but not show dancing,” he said. He continued to explain his success: “I thank Barbara O’Neil, she is a gift from God,” Nitti praises. “She is patient with me.”

A few weeks ago, back when it was warm enough outside to keep the front door open and let the wind flow through the screen door, I realized I had a true problem. The workday was over, I was making a sweet potato quiche for dinner, I had Sam Smith songs playing from my iPhone, and I had the house to myself.

Sun City Strutters performing The Wooden Soldier March at the combined Strutters Prairie singers Christmas show on November 29.
Every once in awhile, the Sun Day must crack some cases. Following is the result of our most recent research.
Don’t you just hate it when you’re standing in the checkout line, next to be served, and you suddenly realize that you’re naked?
Even though Del Webb Boulevard is Sun City’s most heavily traveled roadway, traffic accidents along it are rare. But shortly before 2 p.m. on November 20, the road’s good record was marred by a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Del Webb and Cold Springs Drive.
Letters for the week of December 7
I apologize for this two part series on drug addiction because of its sobering theme at our holiday season. I do, however, know that it is a subject, increasing in public awareness, that needs to be discussed at any time of the year.
Christmas is truly a unique, universal and global holiday celebration. No other holiday in the world can match its widespread appeal to so many cultures and celebrations. It is the oldest, most popular, and widely observed holiday in human history. Its concepts of faith and hope have been embraced throughout the world in an infinite variety of ways.

The Huntley Police Department and Community School District 158 say they take juvenile electronic threats and misuse of social media very seriously. Last week, they had an opportunity to demonstrate that policy dramatically.

For this column I have interviewed Shane Jordi of Hansen Heating and Plumbing. Since 1946, Hansen Heating and Plumbing has been serving McHenry County and the surrounding area.
A quick heads up before starting. For the first time in ten years Netflix made a mistake and sent me the wrong DVD. Instead of what I ordered, I got Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2016, PG-13. I thought “what the heck,” I’ll take a look. That was the second mistake. I lasted ten minutes and that was it. If you are a Harry Potter fan you might enjoy it, otherwise forget it.
As many Sun City residents pack for warmer climates it is important to spend an hour or so to get your house ready for winter. When you are going to be away for a week or more you should prepare your home so there will be no surprises on your return.
Today’s restaurant was closed for vacation the first time we attempted to review it. Because we received so many letters recommending this restaurant, we decided to give it another try. Nancy, aka “Debbie Downer”, said we should call first to avoid spending half a day scouring the countryside for another restaurant if this one was closed again. Me with my “devil may care” attitude said, “let’s just wing it.” So off we went to Heng Wing Restaurant in Palatine.
Woodchuck Christmas Elves donated beautifully hand-crafted toys to Grafton Food Pantry.
A few times a week, Joe Marmion picks up the phone and talks to his friend Lorraine, an 85-year old resident of Sun City. He checks in with her and they chat; once a week, the two of them get together and go somewhere, or just spend time together.
Who doesn’t long for those lazy, hazy days of their childhood? I was raised in quiet Elmwood Park, just a stone’s throw from Chicago’s Austin neighborhood, and I have always thought of my 1950s childhood as idyllic, calm, and peaceful. And yet…

Eileen Delahanty, Volunteer Coordinator District 158 is working to get some Del Webb residents to make the short trip to Leggee Elementary School. Delahanty is working with Sarah DuBose, Leggee Kindergarten Teacher and a member of the Real-World Application Committee. Dubose said, “We want to tie in with the outside world with us. We want to have ‘Buddies’ within our school.”

With the holidays now upon us, the influenza season will be in full throttle with social get-togethers everywhere helping to spread the germs. One predictor of how bad the season (October through May) will be is the continent of Australia which just suffered through an ugly influenza outbreak. Differing from the U.S., however, is the fact that Aussies only encourage high risk-groups to get their flu shots. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone over 6 months be vaccinated.
Each year in July, the Sun City staff, Finance Advisory Committee, and Board of Directors begin the six-months-long process of creating and approving the budget for the following calendar year. The annual process concludes in December with final approval of all budgets for the next year.
