“I never took an art class,” said Maryanne Olson, Sun City resident, who is also a jewelry maker and quilter.

Despite formal training, Olson persists.

“I’ve always liked glass work. When I was in Naples, I taught classes. I have worked with glass for over 40 years,” she said.

In addition, Olson works with textiles, and her quilts do not fall into the traditional realm. She loves vivid colors.

Olson said, “I don’t do old-fashion quilting. I am an art quilter. It’s different. I love bright colors. I do use the old patterns and add colors to turn them into something contemporary.”

Olson’s house has many of her artistic creations hanging on the wall. One quilt is canine-themed.

Olson said, “Those are my dogs. There are twelve here and each one has glasses on. It is my favorite quilt. I am working on one with cats. Each cat is depicted in a different occupation: a bird watcher, policeman and even Carmen Miranda.”

Olson quilts for her family as well.

“When the kids turned 40, they got a quilt. And now I am making a quilt to celebrate their 60th birthday. I have 20 quilts put aside for all of them. I am letting them all pick one quilt or a wall hanging.”

Olson also loves to share her artistic experience with Sun City residents as well.

“I enjoy teaching other residents here,” she said. “They come and join me at my home and we work on jewelry making.”

Olson has been working with jewelry art for many years, and her experience is clear.

“I have been doing glass jewelry for 20 years,” she said. “I had a studio and I sold my pieces. Some of the bead jewelry is very expensive. One bead could cost $75.”

Olson has also offered to volunteer to teach classes at the Pioneer Center.

“I have special glass to use to work with the children. I am hoping we can make some beautiful pendants. I want to teach them designs and to create using their imagination. I want to help them make bead necklaces. I am excited about this,” she said.
