No trick

Sun City will have a Covid-friendly Halloween

By Christine Such

In the past, Sun City’s Grandma, Grandpa, and Me (GG&ME) Charter club has hosted a very special Halloween event.

The Halloween Party is one of the club’s more popular events. The club would invite members and family to come in costume and enjoy the crafts, games, prizes, refreshments, and entertainment. Trick-or-treating in Sun City would begin right after the party. Grandkids would relish this opportunity since this would occur the week before traditional trick or treating in their own neighborhood; a second Halloween. This year, Covid-19 has impacted this tradition.

Cindy Ptak, president of the club said, “The GG&Me club is not hosting a Halloween party this year. Trick-or-treating will not happen the Sunday before Halloween in Sun City, as in previous years, to coincide with the GG and Me Halloween party.”

Sun City association announced it will be following the Village of Huntley guidelines for Halloween. Trick-or-Treating will occur on October 31, 2020. The hours are from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Following contains guidance for trick or treating from the Village of Huntley:

“Due to the pandemic, we are being asked whether or not the Village is canceling Halloween in Huntley. We are not canceling Halloween Trick-or-Treating. Trick-or-treating can be accomplished safely. Treats are already individually wrapped and sealed. And the outdoors allows for social distancing. For your safety as well as the other trick-or-treaters and visiting homes, please: Wear a mask (not the Halloween kind) if interacting closely with others. Do not leave bowls of candy on your porch that multiple people will touch. If you are uncomfortable with handing out candy, please do not turn on your porch light. If you are uncomfortable with your children trick-or-treating, it is your choice as a parent or guardian to not send them. We encourage everyone to practice social distancing, to the extent possible, as it is possible when you are walking around outdoors.”

A recent Harris Poll survey suggests that more than 70% of millennial moms are planning to make “the most” of Halloween with their families, with 80% of all surveyed said that heading out to trick-or-treat is at the top of their list of things to do on Halloween.

Sun City residents are yearning for life to return to normal and mourning the loss of another event. Some residents are planning to be prepared for a few trick-or-treaters on Halloween. They are stacking up on some treats to give out or possibly enjoy themselves.

Diana Eisenbart said, “It’s the time of year I get to eat all the leftover candy rationalizing that if I eat it all now it won’t be around later to tempt me.”

While Halloween 2020 will look different from previous years, the ghost of Halloweens past won’t be too far away.
