During the stay-at-home order, most people cleaned their closets, caught up on their reading, did puzzles, and learned about Zoom. Cathleen Chay wrote a book.
While we may see an influx of pandemic-inspired novels after this worldwide crisis, Chay brings a unique perspective to living life and gives her readers a way to reach calmness in her collections of poems in her new book published this month, Life with Intention.
In a time when attending in-person classes is only a memory from the past, Colleen Koziara has changed the game. She offers a relaxing afternoon of painting virtually on Wednesday afternoons. Koziara has been teaching art classes here in Sun City for four years. But this year has brought challenges.
Roni Schmidt said, “I have been painting with Colleen for four years now. When I saw she was starting the online classes I was thrilled. I love them. Because of COVID and a recent surgery, I am stuck inside and painting keeps me calm. Time just flies when I am painting. The best thing about the online class is I can finish my painting and perfect it at my leisure. I even turned our den into my studio.”
Sun City resident Janette Dennis resurrected “The Golden Age of Radio” with the show Vintage Voices on Huntley Community Radio, but her time as director is coming to a close.
“Vintage Voices was established under the leadership of then-President Myron Shellist and assisted by Bob Gienko, a board member. Allen Pollack was executive director of the station and first recording engineer for Vintage Voices shows. Jim Eggers has succeeded him.”
The Sun City Theatre Company takes to the stage this fall for the musical, Kiss Me Kate, based on William Shakespeare’s comedy, The Taming of the Shrew, set to music and lyrics by Cole Porter.

I write the songs, Manilow might have said. But the residents at Sun City sing them. Sun City Dell Webb presented a Barry Manilow tribute show on Thursday, May 23. The Drendel Ballroom filled with residents and guests to enjoy the music of their youth. The tribute was advertised as: “No stranger to the tribute world, Jay Gates impersonation of Barry Manilow has ‘Fanilows’ agreeing that this act is rapidly becoming ‘the’ show to see! Be it the classic ‘Copacabana’ or the sing-along ‘Can’t Smile Without You’ or the show-stopping ‘Even Now,’ Jay’s Faithful representation of Barry’s voice, combined with a jaw-dropping visual portrayal and multi-media presentation, always leaves audiences wanting more!”

The musical premiered on Broadway in 1949, and has remained a beloved musical ever since, followed by a Hollywood release film in 1958 and many of the songs, such as “Some Enchanted Evening,” “There is Nothing Like a Dame,” and “I’m Gonna Wash that Man Right Outa My Hair” earning their place as popular standards still played today.
John and Arlene Angerame are a tour de force, at least when it comes to Chicago. “We have been doing tours for 7 or 8 years,” said John. The Sun City couple leads historical and literature-based excursions around Chicago. Most recently, they held a “Devil in the White City” tour based on the book by Erik Larsson. The book tells the tale of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 and the exploits of serial murderer Dr. Henry H. Holmes.

If you were one of the hundreds of people who enjoyed dancing to Sun City’s favorite party band Old’s Cool at either Fountainview or at Drendel Hall in August, you won’t want to miss their show at Trio Grille in Marengo on Sunday, September 30, because this will be your last chance to see them this summer and fall season.
When your choir director retires, a typical scenario might be – what do we do now? Do you know anyone who might help in a search, or, who might be a candidate for a replacement? You had a unique and special relationship with your recent director, how do you find someone else who is equally desirable? In Sun City’s Prairie Singers choir, however, none of the above was necessary.
