In 2019, Del Webb Sun City is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and while for many this is an opportunity to reflect on the past, many see it as an important opportunity to look to the future. Looking forward to Sun City’s Club announcements about anniversary shenanigans still to come, the Tall Oaks Tennis Clubs (TOTC) is having some fun in planning their Tennis Kickoff with the big anniversary in mind.

Now that college basketball’s final four is upon us again, let us pause and think about the greatest dynasty in sports history. Let’s remember someone who not only built the first great dynasty but who defined what a dynasty is.

Grant Jahr, President of Sun City CyclePaths Bike Club, takes his passion for bicycles with him everywhere. “I am finishing up my second term as president and have been a member of the Bike Club for 11 years,” he said. During a European river tour with his wife in August, Jahr found some biking opportunities.

Have you ever had a personal encounter with perfection? Card games can (very) occasionally provide you with a “perfect” experience. Take cribbage, for instance. A “perfect” five-card hand in this game is very special, especially since it is literally a once-in-a-lifetime experience, for only a few people. Pat Pogreba, a three-year Sun City resident, had such a happy moment on October 10.

Two Sun City Stingray Swim Club members recently wrapped up their 2018 Senior Games season by participating in the Wisconsin State Senior Swim Olympics. Mark Schark led the charge by winning gold medals for all 6 of his events.

Guests showed up with feathered, elegant, Mardi Gras masks. There was a Mardi Gras King in costume, cape and all. And what Mardi Gras party would be complete without the Jester.

Baseball uniforms are unique for teams in the majors, minors, Little League, t-ball and Sun City. The uniforms here in Sun City reflect the generous sponsorship of the community. But nothing is as unique to baseball as the stirrup sock. Chuck Hund, a team member for the Capitals, is known for the variety of Socks he wears to the games.

Each 16″ [softball] evening team selects two players and each morning team selects one player.”

When the weather gets warm and the umpire says “play ball,” the Sun City Softball Club really gets going. Fresh off a successful Salute to Veterans patriotic exhibition on June 30, the Club will present its annual all-star game this Saturday, July 14, at 4 p.m. at Eakin Field.

Sun City’s newest sport got a major upgrade on June 8. More than 100 residents and community leaders showed up with umbrellas to cut a ribbon (symbolically) at the formerly named Tall Oaks Tennis Center (now renamed Tall Oaks Courts). The occasion was the unveiling of eight new pickleball courts at the center. Because of rain on celebration day, the club held its inaugural event on the new facilities the next day. It was Pickleball 101, demonstrations and practice for Sun City players new to the game of pickleball.

Sun City Softball had its own World Series and the Mustangs waved the “W.”
Glenn Groebli announced that once again “We have brought home the gold.” Groebli, a team member for 16-inch softball and manager of the 70-plus division confirmed that, “We have dominated the race for the gold on the 6 County Senior Olympics in softball for the last 5 out 6 years.”

On Sunday Afternoon, September 24, the Chicago Bears took on the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Alex and Rita Schank brought the full home entertainment experience outside, with a television set situated in their backyard and Stadium Seating for their neighbors. “The admission price of appetizers or dessert is well worth it,” said Kathy Martelli, neighbor.

For the past six years, The Stingrays Swim Club has consistently been walking away with top club honors for medals garnered in the Illinois Six County Senior Swim Meet held more recently at Addison, IL. This year’s July 20 meet, with its usual 7 event format, proved that the Stings continue to be up for the challenge!

You have to find your hobby – your sport” Groebli advised. “And what’s really nice is the camaraderie.” Groebli, president of the Sun City Softball Club decided to honor the many veterans in their softball club and bring the community to Eakin Field.

The fun and friendly competition of Del Webb Sun City’s Spelling Bee concluded with three spellers reigning victorious at the end of the night: Bill Clanton took first place, Linda Rogers took second, and Fred Kimmel came in third.
Helen Hays likes to tell people her birthday is “Christmas in July,” better known as July 25. This year, Hays turns 99; she’ll celebrate with a family gathering, but she knows she’ll have a little celebration with her friends from her Bridge Club, too.
Grant Fritz (19), son of Sun City resident Gary Fritz of Neighborhood 35, competed in a Iron Man 70.3 competition on June 19 in Syracuse New York.
All right, Sun Citians, enough of this “winter ain’t leaving yet” stuff. The Sun City Softball Club opens its 2016 season on May 14. For Sun City, that means the first “official” day of spring. The softballers say so.
U.S. Masters recently wrapped up the 2016 season with the Illinois State Championships. As a tune up to the championships, Stingrays Mark Schark and Len Lencioni swam in the Naperville Redhawks Sweet 16 in March.
