MY SUN DAY NEWS
A recent dog treat scare in areas surrounding Sun City has raised concerns for residents and their canine companions in Del Webb.
With the first polar vortex arriving this December, and temperatures already plunging into the single digits and below, winter has arrived without much warning. With winter’s grand entrance, what can Huntley residents do to cope with sudden snow and cold? Whether it’s what to pack in your car or how to stock your home, both the Huntley Fire Department and the Neighborhood watch have some answers.
I was more than a bit surprised when my wife pointed to the car just after breakfast on Black Friday and flashed me that “Buckle up, Bucko” look. After all, she knew my policy about hitting the mall on the worst shopping day of the year.
The Winter Holidays can be an extremely stressful time of the year for the 50 million Americans (one in every 5 adults and children, often otherwise healthy) who suffer from runny noses, breathing problems, itchy eyes, and headaches – all or any of which may be symptoms of allergic reactions during Christmas/Hanukah festivities.
Christmas festivities are well under way for most of us. I thought I would summarize a list of “Holiday” films that, no doubt you have seen already. But if perchance you missed one or two of them, they are all worth viewing, AND they are all four star films, at least by my criteria.
How time flies when you’re old and having fun! Another year and another 23 restaurant reviews bite the dust. Time once again for the Dining Duo’s “Top Ten” list of this year’s restaurants.
To begin with, there were two movies I was interested in seeing, but only one column to write. The first was Miss Sloan starring Jessica Chastain, the other Nocturnal Animals starring Amy Adams. Both are favorite actresses of mine, so I flipped a coin and it came up tails. I have since thrown the coin away; it made the wrong decision.
This will be my first holiday spent alone. My husband died six months ago and we never had children. I don’t know how to get through the long winter by myself as well.
A well-received contribution to any potluck or picnic, in my experience, is deviled eggs. I still use a basic recipe from my 50-year-old Better Homes & Gardens cookbook. So, when I saw this book, I had to have it.
Did you ever want to give temporary access to your house to a visitor or a service person? If you have a keyless entry keypad on the outside of your garage, chances are it can be programmed to activate a four-digit PIN for a programmed number of hours or number of accesses after which it will expire and the PIN will no longer open the door.
In the last 17 years, Sun City Huntley has provided unparalleled and popular resort-style senior lifestyle activities and facilities to thousands of residents in the first Del Webb active adult community outside the nation’s Sun Belt. But now it has come at a price. It’s in the form of a theft of residents’ funds by a former staff employee.

Huntley residents will be invited to “Take a Book, Return a Book,” when three new Little Free Libraries are installed in spring of 2017.
If you’re an astute reader (I’m guessing most of you are), perhaps you noticed something strange about the cover of this edition of the Son Day. Oh, there it is again. Did you catch it?
Three of the four vacancies on the Sun City board of directors for the 2017 term have been filled, but one remains.
Major changes are coming soon in Sun City’s financial operations. Accounting services, which were moved to the First Service Residential (FSR) management company in 2015, will move back to the local offices as of January 1. The newly integrated software solution to realize efficiencies in the local financial operations went “online” on December 1.
I don’t know how old I was when my curiosity kicked in, but I finally asked Mom: “Who is that, anyway?” She had given me a chore to do that I attacked with my customary zeal — which is to say that I dragged my feet and mourned my tragic station in life.

Pub 47 is teaming up with The Grafton Food Pantry to create a Holiday Giving Extravaganza on December 22, and we need your help!
Found often on hostess tables throughout November and December, cranberries may appear in a variety of sauces, jells, and drinks, as well as in fresh or dried cranberry form added to yogurt, salads, casseroles, stuffing, or dessert. Because Native Americans used cranberries not only for food, but also for medicine and clothing dyes, the fruit’s connection with the holidays seems to be a natural derivation.
This looks like a fun book for tweens, published by Dorling Kindersley, a well-known name in the school library reference world. Huge print, many pictures, and colorful sidebars will be attractive even to reluctant readers.
As many Sun City residents pack for warmer climates, it is important to spend an hour or so to get your house ready for winter. When you are going to be away for a week or more you should prepare your home so there will be no surprises on your return.
The current events of our time are making me feel overwhelmed and depressed. How can I fight the down feelings I have?
I thought I would give you some recommendations on movies a few years old; they are all great and worth your time to rent or stream.
Purchasing tickets for Bingo in Del Webb is akin to planning a secret military operation in a Third World Country. You have to get up at the butt crack of dawn, have all the troops for your table assembled and ready, and all paperwork must be filled out with your I.D. card and money in hand.
Sun City Neighborhood 28 raised over $4000 and donated 22 boxes of food items to the Grafton Food Pantry. The Neighborhood has been conducting food drives since 2006 and an Octoberfest event since 2010.
Santa’s Helpers (also known as the Sun City Woodchucks) delivered over 100 hand- crafted toys for food pantry clients’ children.
Burton the Yorkshire Terrier has been in a casino, crowded elevators, stores and fitting rooms, bathrooms, and airports. But this week, Burton will survive a tornado, travel to Oz, and help Dorothy Gale get back to Kansas when he takes center stage as “Toto,” Dorothy’s beloved dog in the Sun City Theatre Company’s production of “The Wizard of Oz.”
I’ll start by saying I don’t have a fondness for sports. This might seem blasphemous with the Cubs’ World Series victory still lingering in everyone’s headlines and hearts. But wait, it gets better.

America’s most contentious and personal presidential election campaign climaxed with a surprising result on November 8, and it isn’t over yet.
Maintenance and repair activities, both interior and exterior, continue to keep Sun City’s officials very busy.
What a past week this has been (November 2 through November 8)! With two exciting news media results, I would like to discuss the one dearest to sports fans here in the Chicago area: our Cubbies’ World Series Victory!
