MY SUN DAY NEWS
Each year the Oxford Dictionary comes out with a list of words that they have added to their publication. Words such as pneumatologically, studerite, and waterly were added the dictionary in 2015. Way back in 2001, the word “app” was added.
It was one of those falling-asleep moments in bed long ago, when my drowsy wife mumbled to me, “Is Easter two Sundays from now or three?” We had plans for a family gathering on Easter Sunday that would take some preparation, but that was at least two weeks away. Maybe three.
When Marie and Mike Hasanov first moved into their Sun City home roughly ten years ago, one of their first memories upon arriving at the new place was of their granddaughter Abby. She had started doing flips and summersaults in her grandparents’ freshly painted, furniture-free room.
Every time Academy Awards season rolls around, I know the conversation is inevitable. I will casually mention to someone that I would enjoy watching the Oscars, and this is usually all it takes to trigger it. The discussion always goes a little something like this.
It happened exactly one year ago. My active, seemingly healthy husband was in the hospital recovering from totally unexpected triple bypass surgery. We were just beginning to get used to the fact that he’d had a heart attack as he was recovering smoothly ready to go home on February 14 when his heart stopped. (I later learned that is not totally unexpected after open-heart surgery: the heart apparently decided it had enough).
It was the spring of 1932, in Leipzig, Germany. Seven-year-old Oskar Knoblauch and his brother, Siegmund, 10, ran enthusiastically to the sports club in their community, where they ran races and played games with their friends. They were always met cordially by Horst Werner, one of the coaches.
These scientific FACTS will probably read as part of a “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not” column. Compiled in The Beacon (a Burnt Store Marina, Florida newspaper), columnist Bob Bottel writes about “The Wonders of the Human Body.” Here then are fascinating excerpts from his January/February/2016 column:
Hey Cub fans, “next year” is almost here. After last year, is this the “next year” to end all the previous “next years?” Or is this NEXT YEAR, meaning…THE YEAR? Well, forget all this “high expectations” stuff. I’d like to go back about 140 years, to a time when the most dominant and influential player in baseball was a Cub.
Things are still revving up in the controversial student parking issue between two of Huntley’s closest neighbors – Sun City and Huntley High School.
When I was a kid and I was baffled by how something worked, Mom or Dad could explain it to me in a couple short sentences, and then I was up to speed.
For several hours a week, I work at the Huntley Library re-shelving items. During this process, opportunity presents itself for me to peruse materials I’d not see while looking on my own. Very often I say to myself, oh, that looks interesting … and then I keep it or jot down the info. I’ll share some with you that pique my interest.
Should I install Windows 10 or not? Microsoft has been very persistent that you download and install Windows 10 on your Windows 7 or Windows 8 computer. Should you do this?
This is the worst time of the year to find a good movie to see, much less write about. All of the films with Oscar potential were released at the end of last year, and its months until the summer “blockbuster” season.
The fan on my water heater is making a very loud noise. I shut the water heater off. Have other Sun City residents had this problem? Can you suggest a repairman to fix the problem?
I had a number of complaints about the Academy Awards show last Sunday. First and foremost, they chose to show their panorama of self-adoration opposite the swan song episode of the world’s most popular TV show, Downton Abbey.
Letters for the week of March 10
We all remember the great song by Don McLean called American Pie, which was about the plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson). As the lyrics go “I can’t remember if I cried, when I read about his widowed bride, but something touched me deep inside, the day the music died.”
My kids have this unspoken competition between themselves. Periodically, they will take a picture of themselves (yes, I have just dated myself by refusing to call it a selfie) and then use that picture as the screen saver on my phone. The result is that whenever I look at my phone I see their bright, smiling face.
I’d like to share my finding over my Architectural career regarding color perception and safety, especially for the seniors and the elderly.
St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. It’s that “magical” fun-filled holiday that fills the void between Valentine’s Day and April Fool’s Day. This year we celebrated at Peggy Kinnane’s Irish Restaurant and Pub in Arlington Heights.
The Sun City Lions and Diane Ahrens from VFW Post 298 Auxiliary proudly display some of the items donated by Fox Valley residents to help homeless vets transition into structured housing.
While the Sun City Strutters might be known for their grand annual performances, the dancers delight audiences in humbler arenas as well. The Sun City Strutters, composed of about 70 members who normally perform two large winter and spring dance events, also take their show on the road.
When I was a kid, health food was something parents gave their children when they hated them.
Imagine a class where there is no homework and no test; it is learning for the joy of learning. Sounds too good to be true, right?
When the original plans were being crafted about creating a radio station in Huntley, most of the benefits to the community were obvious. One was not. The profound impact we would have on college students to help shape their educational experience, and probably ultimately their careers, was not on the list.
In addition to cancer and heart disease (discussed in Part 1 of this topic), two other major illnesses pose a huge threat to our healthy aging. They are diabetes and obesity.
Thursday, April 14, Sun City Huntley will host its annual Spring Consumer Showcase at Prairie Lodge, located at 12880 Del Webb Blvd. in Huntley. Showcase hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The northern area of California offers a variety of vacation destinations. The wine country of Napa, Sonoma, and Russian River, and the coastal areas along Hwy 1 mirror those of central California south of San Francisco.
Nestled in the heart of downtown Geneva is a little piece of Mexico, and we do mean little. We received an email recommending this restaurant from a Mr. Pon, first name Grou. It was a Groupon, get it? We crack ourselves up! The name of this place is Sergio’s Cantina.
You might not be able to see the forest for the trees, but you can see the downtown Huntley square. Last month, the Village of Huntley removed seven of the eight trees decorating the downtown area, according to Barbara Read, Village of Huntley Management Assistant.
