First Service Residential, Sun City’s management company, didn’t have to go far to find a new executive director for our community.

A summer in the Smokies, part 2

Exiting the Smoky Mountain National Park from Gatlinburg, TN, we began navigating the downhill, mountainous, switchback roads leading to Asheville, NC.

Election candidate forum reveals responses to critical issues

What do Sun City’s current and future leaders think are the biggest issues facing the community? What do they think about a current controversial issue – the out-sourcing of accounting and financial functions to First Service Residential?

Lifestyle delivery changed, gatehouse fate still hanging

This is a special memo to the 200 Lifestyles Magazine delivery volunteers in Sun City. Starting in December, for four months, you’re all getting a winter vacation.

My decision, reasoning and action

As I take my 6-month break from the Sun Day Newspaper, I want to share my health story that has taken place over the past year.

Fall shows and getting to know you

Did you come to the Huntley Fall Fest the weekend of September 25 through the 27? It was absolutely terrific – the weather was perfect, the entertainment great; all-in-all a huge success.

Warding off animal damage

Lucky, our English Springer Spaniel has taught us many life lessons. Her perseverance regarding chasing squirrels is unmatched. The sliding glass door in our kitchen looks out onto our back yard. Each time she sees a squirrel, we let her out, and she runs full force towards the agile rodent and almost catches it.

Fritzl’s Scores “Hit”Zls With Schnitzels

The autumn leaves are starting to peek through, da Bears are losing football games, and Oktoberfest is in full swing. Because of this, Jim and I decided to travel to Lake Zurich to feast at Fritzl’s European Restaurant.

Ask the Woodchucks: October 8, 2015

I have a rabbit in my window well that can’t get out. I don’t have a cover and would like to get one after the rabbit is out.

Debating the lowdown on the latest shower-door craze

My buddies Mike and Bill swung by last week to pick me up for a round of golf—a happy surprise, because lately Mike’s life has been held hostage by home remodeling.

Hang Your Hat: October 8, 2015

Letters for the week of October 8

The Martian, rescuing movie theaters everywhere

“Life is unsustainable in outer space.” Chilling words for those brave enough to enter the new frontier knowing that one mistake could be fatal for all.

Ask an Angel: October 8, 2015

I am a recent widow. My husband took care of all our finances and paperwork. I am overwhelmed to tackle this because I have been out of touch. How can I begin to understand all he used to take care of?

First-class service on a bulk budget

For the past two decades, the Huntley post office has remained quiet while the community has transformed itself from a small farming town to a robust, fast-growing urban suburb whose population has soared from about 3,000 to more than 25,000.

To die like a dog, Part II

I’m going to be blunt. Under very strict parameters, I believe in assisted suicide and human euthanasia. More in human euthanasia than in assisted suicide, in fact, but unless you’re a death-row inmate, human euthanasia isn’t a remote possibility in this country, so assisted suicide is the next best option…I guess.

The fate of Sun City gatehouse remains in question

Sun City’s gatehouse is like an old, worn out antique – “what do we do with it?”

The ongoing challenge of skin cancer

September is Healthy Aging Month. One subject that seems to affect all of us, especially as we age, is skin cancer.

Faire & Square

Sun City’s Art and Crafts Faire is not only for Sun City residents, but by them as well.

Letting the eclipse tell his side of the story

A lady walked up to me recently, shook my hand, and stared deeply—searchingly—into my eyes. “I just wanted to see the other half of your face,” she said.

Live from Huntley High School

Here’s the latest, most exciting news from Huntley Radio.

The Barber of Seville Crystal Lake

Kudos to the Giangrande family for coming up with one of the most creative names for an Italian restaurant. We are referring to the da Baffone Cucina Italiana in Crystal Lake. This translates to “The Big Mustache” Italian Kitchen. After some serious schmoozing of our waiter, we discovered that in 1956 this location was a barber shop, hence the name.

Health Benefits Of Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is one of the most effective ways of getting rid of sugar cravings, shedding visible fat and eliminating unseen fat from the arteries over the entire body.

Leaves of change

Mary, my daughter, and I have discovered common ground. As a very capable 17-year-old, there is not a lot her mom can help her with. Help with homework? Haven’t been able to do that since elementary school. Help with cleaning her room? She would prefer not. Advice regarding friends? Very dangerous territory. College applications? BINGO! This is something I can help her with. She has completed 9 applications and has 3 more to do. For years, she has been editing my newspaper columns, now I am able to edit her college essays. I am so grateful for the time spent on this project together.

A summer in the Smokies, part 1

On top of Old Smokey, all covered in snow… Well, not in the middle of July with temperatures hovering between 90 and 100, but you are at 5,000+ feet so it does cool off fast.

Grandma: A profane trip

Now, twenty-four hours past my deadline, I picked the earliest movie I could get to, which was a morning matinee of Grandma. I should have called in sick.

Update on FloodSafe Washing Machine Hoses

Unless you turn off the water to the washing machine whenever it is not in use, the full water line pressure is on the hoses.

Ask an Angel: September 24, 2015

I lost my husband six months ago, and I feel lost and detached from life. My friends invite me to do things, but I don’t have any interest in participating in anything. I am busy with my children, but am so empty inside. How can I move on without bringing those around me down?
