At Judy’s granddaughter’s wedding, the DJ polled the guests to see who had been married the longest. As luck would have it, it turned out to be Judy and her husband, Ray.

Dog is man’s best… therapist

As the old adage says, “Dog is a man’s best friend.” While that may bode true for the Griffith and Engeriser families, their canine companions – Bailey and Samson, respectively – share their friendship with patients, the staff, and visitors of Sherman Hospital.

Wait a minute, did you just hear what I heard?

The preset FM radio stations in my car are as follows:

Golden Diners works to ensure seniors stay fed

Above ground, The Hemmens Cultural Center delivers its main commodity: entertainment. Hundreds of performers take the stage every year to amuse, excite, and awe guests. But deeper down, well below the stage and seats, a much more basic need is being provided.

Bags club lands new home outside of Sun City

The bags charter club has found a new place to play, but it isn’t in Sun City.

Sometimes it’s best to know you can’t get there from here

I don’t know if my parents naturally had more patience than I did, or if they came by their patience through long practice, but they somehow managed to resist the temptation to leave me at a gas station after the hundredth time I asked them, “Are we there yet?” on our annual drive to Lake Nicaboyne in northern Wisconsin.

Please Pass the Cranberries!

At this year’s holiday meals, you might frequently hear the cry for more cranberries to be passed around the family table. Whether in a drink, sauce, relish, jellied mold, bread, cake, or cookie, or in their original state, the health benefits of cranberries can’t be beat! According to the Kane County Farmer Newspaper, cranberries fight cancer, aging, diabetes, bacterial infections, and neurological diseases.

With new president, Sun City Historians have a future

For nearly eight years, the Sun City Historians Club was very busy discussing and learning about the world’s best-known historical events. Earlier this year, they discovered that they needed to give more attention to their own history.

The dictionary project

There was a flurry of activity in the Community Room at a local bank on a recent Tuesday as dozens of Rotary Club members gathered to unpack and prepare nearly 800 paperback dictionaries to be distributed in district schools throughout the city.

The incredible influence of football

Maybe you hate football, maybe you are addicted to it, or maybe you don’t even care about it one way or another. The fact is, all sports played and watched in our country have an enormous impact on our economy and our lives, but none more than football.

Porter’s provides a cure to the Octoberfest itch

With November just a few days ahead of me, I realized that I had not had an Octoberfest beer for the season. With that in mind, I suggested to my husband that we get in on some good brew at Porter’s Pub, 1250 Bowes Creek Boulevard, in Elgin.

An old-fashioned supper club, spiced up Italian-style

Back in my youth, Chicago was known for its great supper clubs. Places like the Edgewater Beach Hotel and the London House were destinations for senior proms. These were restaurants that offered entertainment as a package deal, usually with a cover charge depending upon the quality and cost of the performers.

How to identify and trap Norway rats

One of the Woodchucks noticed a strange, medium-length, furry animal on his bird feeder. After patiently watching, he was able to get some good pictures of the critter. He sent the pictures to the McHenry County Extension Services, who told him he had a Norway rat.

It can never hurt to teach some puppy manners

Being a responsible dog owner is a job that requires a lot of thought and effort. It doesn’t only include making sure that your dog is current on vaccinations, eating the right foods, getting proper socialization and plenty of exercise. A responsible owner should also teach their dogs what I like to call puppy manners and being respectful of others.

As election dust settles, two SC political groups weigh in

The votes have been cast. The political ads have ceased. Barack Obama retained his presidency for another four-year term, with 303 electoral votes and approximately 50 percent of the nation’s vote.

No skeletons. Only gargoyles, chimps, and tacky turtles, Part II

Old and deadly. If you look closely, the bottle is unopened and about a half-finger of pure, concentrated poison sits at the bottom. By now the whiskey is probably nuclear.

Feeding the Firefighters

The time of food and merriment is upon us once again. Soon the sounds of families coming together over turkey dinner will fill the air, along with the smells of roasted turkey and sweet cranberries.

At Sun City, pool takes a softer touch

Mention pool to most folks today, and they probably think of rough, tough, beer-drinking men in smoke-filled bars playing games of 8- or 9-ball and betting money on every game, or sometimes on every shot. In a previous generation or two, the town’s “pool hall” was not always considered a fit place for decent folks.

Heartland Bank acquires Citizens First National Bank operations from FDIC

Heartland Bank and Trust Company has assumed the deposits and assets of Citizens First National Bank, headquartered in Princeton, IL from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Seniors, get moving! Part 2: Let’s Get Started!

Cathy Segarra, Sun City/Huntley’s Wellness Department Nurse, advises seniors to “check with your doctor before starting any exercise. You may have some limitations–arthritic or back issues [for example].”

Huntley fire chief retires after 11 years serving village

If history is any indication, former Huntley Fire Chief Jim Saletta won’t stay retired for long.

A dream come true

It took some 40 years for me to put the pieces together on how to get healthy and stay that way. Sometime around 2005 I was starting to get restless. I had stored much information but started to realize my knowledge wasn’t helping others.

Are extended warranties worth the cost?

I use my exercise bike almost daily. It is an important part of keeping in top physical shape. For those of you who know me, you know I am not in physical shape. However, if I didn’t use the bike, I would be much worse off. I purchased my current bike about four years ago. It was one of the better (not the best) brands at the time. The salesperson convinced me to take the extended warranty because it included at-home repair service.

Some parting words until the next time we garden

A few weeks ago I visited the campus of my alma mater, Texas A&M University. On a Friday afternoon, I sat on a bench reading The Battalion newspaper while being drenched in the warmth of the sun. Everything was right with the world. That experience reminded me of how much I love newspapers.

Paying homage to the first lady of song

In previous columns, I’ve only mentioned some of the great female vocalists while writing about other musicians. It’s time to pay homage to an all-time great vocalist who began as a jazz singer but later became hugely successful in pop. The undisputed First Lady of Song is, of course, Ella Fitzgerald, who used her voice like a musical instrument.
