Instant hot water

Did you ever wish that when you stagger into the bathroom in the morning and turn on the hot water in the bathroom sink there was instant hot water like in quality hotels? There is a device that will fulfill your wish. It is called a recirculating hot water pump.

Library volunteer celebrates 96th birthday

Kay Harlow is an active senior in Sun City, a founding member of a senior breakfast club, and in her spare time volunteers at the Huntley Library. On November 10 the library staff and patrons helped Kay celebrate her 96th birthday.

Geezer Moments: December 1, 2011

Instead of the usual Geezer Moments, this time I have something different, but really the same. You say, what are you talking about, Sammy? Ever heard of “Baby Brain” or “Pregnancy Brain?” Well, I hadn’t until my personal banker told me about her pregnancy experiences, suggesting a strong resemblance to Geezer Moments. Read these and see if you find similarities between the two afflictions.

It was the day after Christmas. The pastor of a church was looking over their Nativity scene when he noticed the baby Jesus was missing from among the figures.

Miss Mayflower

The “Mayflower” I write about today is not about the ship crossing dark waters, facing severe storms, carrying cargo and pilgrims escaping religious persecution. It is not an event of the 1600’s but rather the 1900’s. The guiding force is not the captain of the ship, Master Christopher Jones. It is Miss Annabelle Mayflower, a teacher extraordinaire whose guidance led the way for many children as they tried to fit comfortably in the world around them. I was fortunate to have been one of those children in that magical classroom.

Never letting someone go quilt-Liss

Remember Linus from the Charles Schultz comic “Charlie Brown”? Liss Kundich (N.21) surely does. He was the character who always carried around a blanket for security. Knowing how much a blanket can mean to a child, Project Linus was formed, and today, children in hospitals are the happy recipients of beautiful quilts. Liss was part of the Project Linus chapter in California before she moved to Illinois. She is now active in the Northbrook chapter. From the year 2002 until present day, they have made 6,500 quilts. Project Linus is a not-for-profit group.

Um, excuse me, may I interject?

When I think about things that I’m thankful for, I’m reminded of manners. Without please and thank you, we’d get nowhere (at least, nowhere with relationships intact). My oldest (and, of course, “wisest” wink, wink) sister-in-law taught me one of my first lessons in developing good manners: how to gracefully and properly interrupt people talking, which comes in handy being a reporter.

The awareness of personal crime, like burglary, is always something in the back of a homeowner’s mind. A quality substitute to a larger police presence is the formation of a Neighborhood Watch. This allows the community to, in effect, police itself. To have a Neighborhood Watch officially sanctioned, resulting in a Neighborhood Watch sign being posted and supported by the police, there are certain guidelines that must be met.

OOPS – before anyone could notice the self-appointed judges of Sun Views, which endorsed 3 candidates in the last Board of Directors election, stacked the ballet box so your vote did not matter.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

The answer: to get to Checkers II, of course, because that’s where the other good chickens end up! Seriously, we recently were joined by our Grainery Lane neighbors, Bob and Roberta, for a delicious meal at this country restaurant just a short distance from Huntley in the little town of Union.

Huntley Library has Free eBooks, Kindle Downloads

With eReader popularity soaring, the Huntley library is meeting demand by expanding the selection and quantity of titles available through their free download service. Amazon’s Kindle eReader, the most popular device, became compatible with the eBooks offered for free at the Huntley Library in October. Kindle owners have joined Nook, iPad, Sony, and other eReader owners in flocking to check out the free library downloads.

Mysterious noise solved

Recently two Woodchucks reported that a hissing or low whistling noise started in their homes. One thought it was an electrical sound, but after checking each electrical appliance found nothing. He then noticed that when he turned on the water in the bathroom sink or the shower, the sound stopped. He then turned off the main water valve to the house. This also stopped the noise. Since turning off the water to the house was not an acceptable solution, he kept looking.

Perhaps you have read my “Dining Out with the Geezers” column, which covers one of my passions in life. You’ve probably heard the old saying that some people “Eat to live, while others live to eat.” Well, the latter describes me pretty well, except it’s not complete without the cooking component.
