MY SUN DAY NEWS
In each day of calendar 2011, an average of 7,000 persons will reach the age of 65. This is the first wave of Baby Boomers – those born in the years 1946 to 1964. According to a survey conducted by AARP in December, 2010, 31% of those Boomers reaching age 65 in 2011 are still working, and 40% of them do not intend to ever retire. This is a bit of a shift from prior generations, where 65 was the magic year for retirement.
Huntley Fall Fest 2011 might just have you spinning … literally.
With summer travel winding down, many of us will have a camera full of digital pictures of sights seen and other family fun events. In order to better enjoy them, we need to get those pictures off the digital camera and into our computer, organize them into albums, fix them up a bit, and—most important—share them with our family and friends.

“A Street Car Named Desire” has a whole different meaning for Sun City resident and history buff Fred Leznek. “When I was a little boy … my mother would always take me on the streetcar to go downtown, and I was always infatuated with streetcars,” Leznek said, referring to the gone-by public transportation service also known as the trolley.
Is it just me or are all-in-one, big-box stores, such the ones found on the Randall Road artery between I90 and Algonquin Road, having trouble knowing who they are or what they sell anymore? They’re like teenagers suffering perpetual identity crises.

“Mary, Mary, how does your garden grow?” This is surely a tough question to answer, especially this summer with its extreme temperatures and rainfall. Perhaps an even tougher question to answer for Sun City’s own “truck farmers” would be, What crop that are you growing will give you and your acquaintances the most nutritional value: cucumbers, peppers, beans, tomatoes? If you guessed tomatoes, you are right on.

Betty Barnett (N. 22) always wanted a dog, but the residences and condos she lived in had a policy of NO PETS. On the very day she retired, she found herself at an animal shelter just to take a look and came home with Princess. That was five years ago, and she has been a volunteer for the Anderson Animal Shelter in South Elgin ever since.
Q: I decided to get a cell phone. My friends tell me to enter my emergency information in the phone and to label it ICE. What exactly is ICE?
Soldier Field’s Old Sod – Does the Chicago Park District have a cushy contract with the Soldier Field sod maintenance workers? I can’t think of any other reason why the park district insists on grass instead of field turf. They spent multi-millions in the 90s refurbishing Soldier Field, but refused to spend $1 million more for artificial turf. That makes no sense. They should stop listening to John Madden (who favors sod just because he likes dirty uniforms). The players want it and need it. Canceling a fan-based event for sod reasons recently was appalling. Come on, Bears, get yourself into the 21st century.
My wife is always good for a “moment” or two. For this column, she was forthcoming with a daily double. Recently, she put the correct attachment onto the vacuum hose, starting pushing it around on the floor, and realized she forgot to turn the vacuum on.
If your air conditioner was not keeping your house cool during the recent heat wave or if your summer electric bills are higher than your neighbors’, your problem might be an overcharged air conditioner—one that has too much refrigerant.

Sun City’s Bocce Club is one of, if not, the biggest Charter Club of all. This week, we took a drive to try out the Chinese cuisine at the Gourmet House in Algonquin. We were joined by our friends and block neighbors, Doug and Dorothy. Mary Lou Dorgan, a very youthful-looking resident of N. 30, celebrated her 70th birthday on July 31 by jumping out of an airplane at 14,000 feet over the Mississippi Valley in western Illinois. It wasn’t a dare or a bet or a “something-to-prove,” daredevil act. This was simply a fun way to celebrate a birthday, like you or I might decide to invite a few friends over for cake and ice cream on birthday number whatever.
