MY SUN DAY NEWS
My wife and I were huge fans of NBC’s hit show Friends. It brought us a lot of laughs the ten years it was on. And chief among those came from arguably the funniest scene in the show’s entire history, in which Ross enlisted friends Rachel and Chandler to help him move a new sofa up his New York apartment building’s stairwell. A quick synopsis: the couch was too long for the tight curves of the stairwell, which resulted in numerous failed strategies, and Ross repeatedly commanded his friends to “Pivot, pi-vot, PIV-OT!”
Residents who constructed a new fixture on a Sun City building are hoping it brings perpetual sunshine to the community.

PH-check! Total Alkalinity-check! Chlorine Level-check! Filter pressure-check! Temperature-well, almost check! Looks like Sun City’s computer- and manually-assisted swimming pools are doing just fine on these hot days of summer. When “water relief” is an oft discussed subject, a sultry, warm Sunday might bring as many as 160 people to cool off in Meadowview’s pool alone. That, of course, does not include Prairie Lodge’s indoor and outdoor pools or Sun City’s two spas.
Has the heat got you feeling the blues? Well, prepare to turn that frown upside down, and mark your calendars. At 7 p.m. on September 8 in Drendel Ballroom, prepare to have your funny bone strummed and your ears tickled by the Doug Gabriel & Family show. Doug Gabriel has won Male Vocalist of the Year seven times, and his show was awarded Branson Missouri’s best morning show six years in a row.

In my father’s day and age, this wasn’t even a question. It was 62, then 65, and now?? Well, now depending on when you were born, you have a different “full retirement age” according to the Social Security Administration. Leave it to the Federal government to complicate things. If you look through the Social Security Administration’s website, it is loaded with detailed information to help you determine when the best age for retirement is “just right” for you.
If the screens on your house are stretched or have holes in them, it’s time to replace them. There are two ways you can replace your window screens. You can either bring your damaged screen to the hardware store and have them do it for you, or you can do it yourself and save the labor costs. If I tell you how to take it to the hardware store, this column will be too short, so I’ll tell you how to do it yourself.
We all know that hard drives crash. The issue is not if your hard drive will crash, but when it will crash. For years the solution was to install a second internal hard drive in your computer and back up your data on the alternate drive.
This week, we ventured out and beyond Randall Road for dinner at Yanni’s Greek Restaurant. We were with Nick and Nancy, friends who now live in Michigan but were in town for their family picnic. We all love Greek food, and this turned out to be a great choice.
Q: I’ve fallen for the first time recently, and it really scared me. Since this happened to me, my friends have told me to expect it to happen again. Is this true, or am I just being too worried?

This year’s summer trip to the Koplos’ condo in Vail, Colorado proved to be a very eventful vacation indeed! My husband, Nick, and I were joined by two of our children and their respective mates as we hiked along roaring creeks, traveled to silver mines, and visited a pass at 12,000-feet elevation, where my son and I engaged in a snowball fight!
A husband and wife are shopping at their local Walmart. The husband picks up a case of Budweiser and puts it in their cart.

Maybe it’s that he loves to shop and she loves to golf. Or maybe it’s the lifetime spent in theater that first brought them together. Maybe it’s their two adored cats, Boots and Sweetie. Whatever the source, there’s a tangible connection between Jim and Kate Williams that reveals itself in laughs and smiles as they talk about how their lives have changed this year.
I had mixed feelings about power outages when I was a kid. All the rules changed in the dark. Dad said, “Don’t open the fridge,” while Mom lit candles, which were both spooky and mysterious, casting long, flickering shadows on the walls. My home was transformed into an eighteenth-century villa, and I wondered if this was what it was like before there were electric lights. What struck me as most sinister was how dark everything was. Not just dark…black.
Sun City Board of Directors elections have been routine, dull affairs in which about 20% of the residents have participated. This fall’s election probably will change that, dramatically.

With the long, hot days of summer finally upon us at Sun City, a word of caution is needed for those amongst us who spend many hours daily enjoying the “great outdoors.” If you’re like me, you love the warmth of the sun and the tan that makes you “look so good.” What you probably don’t realize, however, is the fact that the sun’s ultraviolet radiation (UV rays) is even more damaging to aged skin. Phototoxicity, Photoallergy, and Skin-Induced Eczema are just three conditions that can produce this skin damage.
When we moved here ten years ago, there were very few birds. Our previous house was located in the woods, and we were used to hearing birds in the morning when we awoke, and there were many birds to be seen in the air and in the trees all during the day.
The U.S. government is now struggling to devise a plan for managing our debt. Should they raise the debt ceiling or cut spending? As I watch the politicians battle over the issues, I am reminded of a faux pas I made early in life when deciding what to do about my college education loans.
This week’s review is of Chen’s Restaurant, located at 279 N. Randall Rd. in Lake in the Hills, actually just in front of Costco. This restaurant was just recently opened and is one of two under the same management, the other located in Crystal Lake. Visiting with us were fellow N-33 neighbors Kay Winklehake, Steve and Diane Hendrickson, and Mike and Emma Burns. We were seated promptly and greeted by our server, who took our drink orders. We ordered a few appetizers, all of which were very tasty and enjoyable, including Crab Rangoon (exceptional), Spring Rolls, King Egg Rolls, and Bar-B-Que Spare Ribs.
