Soldier Field’s Old Sod – Does the Chicago Park District have a cushy contract with the Soldier Field sod maintenance workers? I can’t think of any other reason why the park district insists on grass instead of field turf. They spent multi-millions in the 90s refurbishing Soldier Field, but refused to spend $1 million more for artificial turf. That makes no sense. They should stop listening to John Madden (who favors sod just because he likes dirty uniforms). The players want it and need it. Canceling a fan-based event for sod reasons recently was appalling. Come on, Bears, get yourself into the 21st century.
My wife is always good for a “moment” or two. For this column, she was forthcoming with a daily double. Recently, she put the correct attachment onto the vacuum hose, starting pushing it around on the floor, and realized she forgot to turn the vacuum on.

A recent headline in CNN Money reported that “Social Security wrongly declares 14,000 people dead each year.” Approximately one in every 200 deaths are incorrectly recorded in the Death Master Files of the Social Security Administration.

Sun City’s Bocce Club is one of, if not, the biggest Charter Club of all. The 700-member Bocce Ball group is planning its post-league tournament on August 30, and it should be one of the biggest competitive events of the year. Get there early if you want a good parking space. If it rains, the event will be held on August 31.
This week, we took a drive to try out the Chinese cuisine at the Gourmet House in Algonquin. We were joined by our friends and block neighbors, Doug and Dorothy. The restaurant is open, well lit, lightly decorated with modern touches, and the tables set and covered with white paper to maintain easy clean up.
On Saturday, July 23, Neighborhood 24 hosted their Third Annual Games Day. Despite heavy rains the previous night, over forty active, fun-loving neighbors attended and participated in a two-hour game fest playing Baggo, Frisbee Tennis, Ladder Golf, Ring Toss, Croquet, Left-Right-Center, and Water Balloon Toss.

Mary Lou Dorgan, a very youthful-looking resident of N. 30, celebrated her 70th birthday on July 31 by jumping out of an airplane at 14,000 feet over the Mississippi Valley in western Illinois. It wasn’t a dare or a bet or a “something-to-prove,” daredevil act. This was simply a fun way to celebrate a birthday, like you or I might decide to invite a few friends over for cake and ice cream on birthday number whatever.
My wife and I were huge fans of NBC’s hit show Friends. It brought us a lot of laughs the ten years it was on. And chief among those came from arguably the funniest scene in the show’s entire history, in which Ross enlisted friends Rachel and Chandler to help him move a new sofa up his New York apartment building’s stairwell. A quick synopsis: the couch was too long for the tight curves of the stairwell, which resulted in numerous failed strategies, and Ross repeatedly commanded his friends to “Pivot, pi-vot, PIV-OT!”

In my father’s day and age, this wasn’t even a question. It was 62, then 65, and now?? If you look through the Social Security Administration’s website, it is loaded with detailed information to help you determine when the best age for retirement is “just right” for you.
