Sun City’s best step up to the plate

SUN CITY – Gloves can get broken in, jerseys made and rosters chosen, but little preparation can be made for the sensation sure to be found at this year’s Sun City Senior Softball All Star Game at Eakin Field on August 6 at 6 p.m. The All Star game is played between the National and …

Familiarity with senior services groups save time, stress

Most people know that calling 9-1-1 is one of the very first things that should be done during an emergency. The steps to take afterward, however, can be a bit more complicated.

Community Christian Fellowship moves out of Sun City

A final appeal by the Community Christian Fellowship, formerly the Community Christian Church, to continue meeting in Sun City’s Meadow View Lodge was turned down by the Sun City Association’s Board of Directors last week.

Flags on Stone Hill Drive

This photo is taken in front of one of the houses on Stone Hill Drive. For the past six years, residents had three volunteer homeowners from the block decorate all ten of their mailboxes with American flags for all-American patriotic holidays. “We are proud of our country and want to honor it is this special …

Tip 20: More Air Conditioner Information

In the last issue we talked about normal maintenance that all residents should be doing, such as changing filters and washing the condenser fins. In this issue, we will discuss some of the things you can do when using your air conditioner to get the most out of it.

Financing your retirement

Given all the challenges we are facing with our current economy, the topic of retirement financing is frequently discussed among Sun City neighbors. In times past, we relied on financial planners to provide the expertise, prudence, and guidance in managing our investments to provide for retirement.

Sun City residents form property tax action group

Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

A real blast

Usually on July 4th, we park on Jim Dahmer drive, and while the mosquitoes feast on us, we watch the fireworks. Now I’ve heard that this year no one was allowed this “Delight on Dahmer,” but that’s another story for someone else. No, this year, in a sudden fit of impulsivity (my spécialité), we booked a room in Lake Geneva at the Geneva Inn for two nights. The Inclusive Package included a lake view deluxe room, dinner at the inn’s restaurant, continental breakfast, turndown service with chocolates (teeny-tiny), and a single rose each night. Our room had a huge soaking tub in one corner.

Tip 1: What to consider when buying a computer

As the first column in a planned series of articles brought to you by the Sun City Huntley (SCH) Computer Club, this is aimed at readers who may be novices or have never had a computer. Numerous topics as well as information for more seasoned users will follow in future articles, and will include listings of free training classes and other services available to all club members.

Dining out with Geezers: Maciano’s

This week’s review is of Maciano’s Restaurant, located at 3091 US Rt. 20 in Elgin. It is just west of Randall Rd., on the south side of the road. This restaurant is one of 5 suburban Chicago family restaurants under this name.

Laughter by Paul: July 14, 2011

A man placed some flowers on the grave of his dearly departed mother and started back toward his car when his attention was diverted to another man kneeling at a grave. The man seemed to be praying with profound intensity and kept repeating, “Why did you have to die? Why did you have to die?”

Hang your hat: July 14, 2011

Letters for the week of July 14.

There are pool sharks and then there are pool Sharkettes

There are ladies in the pool hall!! Back in the day, this shout would often spark protests and pandemonium in pool halls (ahem, billiard parlors). Proper ladies wouldn’t want to be seen in one. Even if they did, the guys probably wouldn’t let them in.

Home renovations. Are you tough enough? Hooyah!

Like many folks out there, my wife and I are so upside down on our mortgage, it’s like living through a polar shift. Today, our condo is worth only about one-third of the price we bought it for in 2001, not to mention how far we are away from what it was valued at five years ago (in Mafioso, all I can say is fuggedaboutit). And since we’re trying to move this year, we’re in a tough position. Well, as tough as any anchor around your neck puts you in.

Apportionment presented as solution at tax presentation

Residents seeking answers to their heightened tax bills and discrepancies in the tax burden between Rutland and Grafton Townships packed Drendel Ballroom on June 18.

Board declines church rental renewal

After months of intense and wide-ranging debate, the request for the church room rental agreement extension came down to improper use of Sun City logos and pictures on church materials.

Take the A out of Aches and pAins and put it back in Activity

Warmer weather has Sun City residents heading outside to enjoy their favorite summer activities. Gardeners are planting vegetables and pruning colorful flowerbeds while golfers are hitting the links to enjoy a leisurely round. Seniors suffering from arthritis oftentimes had to give up these activities, believing it would only make matters worse.

Weekend of Valor

If you are a veteran or know of a local combat veteran of any war and would like to remember and honor them in some way, you will have a wonderful opportunity to do so at the Northern Illinois Quilt Fest being held at several locations throughout northern Illinois this summer.

Like ducks out of water

What do ducks do when they’re out of the water? They play and eat, of course. What do Stingray Swim Club members do when they’re out of the water? They play and eat, of course.

Q&As delve into property tax increase

Below are questions submitted to McHenry County Chief County Assessment Office Robert H. Ross, ASA by Sun City residents following the Saturday, June 18 meeting held in Drendel Ballroom that addressed the recent increase in property taxes.

Driving Nails

Yeah, that’s me. Standing on the Eiffel Tower and loving it.

Laughter by Paul: June 30, 2011

A young couple was delighted when their long wait to adopt a baby came to an end. The adoption agency called to tell them that there was a wonderful Russian baby boy available.

College of Knowledge

Almost every morning if you are walking through N. 28 you will see Louie Theodore sitting in his garage with a group of close friends “chitchattin over a cup of coffee.” This group was branded the “College of Knowledge” by Ralph Whenes, who was one of the original members alongside Theodore, Bob Passaglia, and Blackie.

Geezer Moments: June 30, 2011

I have had some very funny and often strange “moments” sent to me by readers since I started this column last year. This one, however, probably most typifies life as an active senior here in our Sun City community. It comes from Joan and Jim Rice, and originally was too lengthy to use in the space allotted for my column, so I’ve had to do some serious editing to make it fit. Here’s their story:

Tip 19: Air Conditioner Maintenance

The unit on the outside of your house with the large fan pointing upward is called the condenser unit. It contains the compressor and the condenser heat exchanger. The condenser is like the radiator in your car. It has tubes that wrap around all four sides of the box. These tubes have thin aluminum fins to dissipate the heat. Its function is to get rid of the heat that is collected from inside your house. The fan draws air across the fins and tubes of the condenser and exhausts this air upward.

Health savings accounts setup

This article is targeted to our Sun City Residents who are between the ages of 55 and 65. The rising costs of health insurance have forced many of us to change our health care coverage to higher deductible plans to reduce the insurance premiums.

“It’s a buyer’s market” in Sun City

If it looks like there are a lot of “for sale” signs dotting the lawns of Sun City homes, it’s no illusion – the number of homes for sale is up from previous years.

Dining Out With the Geezers: Moretti’s

This week’s review is on Moretti’s, located on Randall Road, just in front of Costco. Moretti’s is the current breed of family restaurant/sports bar with a diversified menu.
