MY SUN DAY NEWS
In my father’s day and age, this wasn’t even a question. It was 62, then 65, and now?? Well, now depending on when you were born, you have a different “full retirement age” according to the Social Security Administration. Leave it to the Federal government to complicate things. If you look through the Social Security Administration’s website, it is loaded with detailed information to help you determine when the best age for retirement is “just right” for you.
If the screens on your house are stretched or have holes in them, it’s time to replace them. There are two ways you can replace your window screens. You can either bring your damaged screen to the hardware store and have them do it for you, or you can do it yourself and save the labor costs. If I tell you how to take it to the hardware store, this column will be too short, so I’ll tell you how to do it yourself.
We all know that hard drives crash. The issue is not if your hard drive will crash, but when it will crash. For years the solution was to install a second internal hard drive in your computer and back up your data on the alternate drive.
This week, we ventured out and beyond Randall Road for dinner at Yanni’s Greek Restaurant. We were with Nick and Nancy, friends who now live in Michigan but were in town for their family picnic. We all love Greek food, and this turned out to be a great choice.
Q: I’ve fallen for the first time recently, and it really scared me. Since this happened to me, my friends have told me to expect it to happen again. Is this true, or am I just being too worried?

This year’s summer trip to the Koplos’ condo in Vail, Colorado proved to be a very eventful vacation indeed! My husband, Nick, and I were joined by two of our children and their respective mates as we hiked along roaring creeks, traveled to silver mines, and visited a pass at 12,000-feet elevation, where my son and I engaged in a snowball fight!
A husband and wife are shopping at their local Walmart. The husband picks up a case of Budweiser and puts it in their cart.
The winners of the Triple Play Canasta Tournament that was held on July 23 and 24 in the multi-purpose room at the Sun City lodge.
Maybe it’s that he loves to shop and she loves to golf. Or maybe it’s the lifetime spent in theater that first brought them together. Maybe it’s their two adored cats, Boots and Sweetie. Whatever the source, there’s a tangible connection between Jim and Kate Williams that reveals itself in laughs and smiles as they talk about how their lives have changed this year.
I had mixed feelings about power outages when I was a kid. All the rules changed in the dark. Dad said, “Don’t open the fridge,” while Mom lit candles, which were both spooky and mysterious, casting long, flickering shadows on the walls. My home was transformed into an eighteenth-century villa, and I wondered if this was what it was like before there were electric lights. What struck me as most sinister was how dark everything was. Not just dark…black.
Sun City Board of Directors elections have been routine, dull affairs in which about 20% of the residents have participated. This fall’s election probably will change that, dramatically.
The Sunflower Garden Club this year has chosen the Grafton Food Pantry and NICA (Northern Illinois Center for Autism) for their annual donations. The Grafton Food Pantry was incorporated in 2006 and is run by friends with a passion to help out their community. Their mission is to provide food items and household products to people in need of assistance and seek to improve lives through education on nutrition and smart shopping. Their new Huntley location is on Smith Drive, and they serve about 500 residents from the areas of Huntley, Lakewood, and portions of Lake in the Hills, Crystal Lake, and Algonquin.
The summer is in full swing, and that means that bicycles are out in force. Therefore it is imperative for motorists and cyclists alike to be extra aware of each other out on the roadways. Sun City resident John Wronski of N.36 has been president of the Bike Club since January of this year.
Getting a distress call from a relative in trouble is sure to stir emotions, but staying calm and finding out the truth can save thousands of dollars.
This year’s Six County Senior Olympics has concluded with all three Sun City, Huntley, teams being awarded medals in their respective sports. Teams were entered in both the age 60+ and age 70+ divisions of the Softball Tournament and one team in the recreational division of the Volleyball Tournament.
With the long, hot days of summer finally upon us at Sun City, a word of caution is needed for those amongst us who spend many hours daily enjoying the “great outdoors.” If you’re like me, you love the warmth of the sun and the tan that makes you “look so good.” What you probably don’t realize, however, is the fact that the sun’s ultraviolet radiation (UV rays) is even more damaging to aged skin. Phototoxicity, Photoallergy, and Skin-Induced Eczema are just three conditions that can produce this skin damage.
When we moved here ten years ago, there were very few birds. Our previous house was located in the woods, and we were used to hearing birds in the morning when we awoke, and there were many birds to be seen in the air and in the trees all during the day.
The U.S. government is now struggling to devise a plan for managing our debt. Should they raise the debt ceiling or cut spending? As I watch the politicians battle over the issues, I am reminded of a faux pas I made early in life when deciding what to do about my college education loans.
This week’s review is of Chen’s Restaurant, located at 279 N. Randall Rd. in Lake in the Hills, actually just in front of Costco. This restaurant was just recently opened and is one of two under the same management, the other located in Crystal Lake. Visiting with us were fellow N-33 neighbors Kay Winklehake, Steve and Diane Hendrickson, and Mike and Emma Burns. We were seated promptly and greeted by our server, who took our drink orders. We ordered a few appetizers, all of which were very tasty and enjoyable, including Crab Rangoon (exceptional), Spring Rolls, King Egg Rolls, and Bar-B-Que Spare Ribs.
Hidden deep within a report predicting an end to the stalemate were some amazing nuggets of information about what this pact apparently says. There are actually some things in the agreement that come close to some of the things I’ve been wishing for years the NFL would do to make pro football more fan friendly, and (dare I say) good for the sport.
Let’s start this week’s column off with one from the sweet mom of one of my fellow members of the Hunks. She told this one about herself and asked for anonymity. She recently purchased candle stands for her son’s fireplace as a gift. When she took them out of the box, something wasn’t right. They didn’t match.
Q: My friend had a stroke and her communication is affected. I can tell she knows what she wants to say, but she is unable to get it out. Our relationship is challenged right now, not because of the stroke, because I care for her as much as I ever did, but the communication challenges are frustrating for both of us. I feel bad for her. Is there something I can do to help her along in this journey?

It was New Year’s Eve, 2005, and a foursome in Sun City was celebrating by “dealing” in its favorite card game, Canasta. The conversation reportedly went something like this.
I think most of us like to believe we’re clean people. We keep clean homes (for the most part), we take care of our bodies, practicing good hygiene, and we wash our cars regularly to dissuade the neighborhood kids from swiping the words WASH ME on our rear windows. For the most part, to usurp an idea from Stephen King and Peter Straub’s Black House, we try to prevent “slippage.”
For Twin Garden Farms in Harvard, success is all in the genes. Their TGF Mirai (pronounced mee-rye) sweet corn, a special hybrid developed on the farm, has become their trademark in recent years, drawing in crowds eager to try Mirai, which in Japansese translates to “taste of the future.”
