“Mary, Mary, how does your garden grow?” This is surely a tough question to answer, especially this summer with its extreme temperatures and rainfall. Perhaps an even tougher question to answer for Sun City’s own “truck farmers” would be, What crop that are you growing will give you and your acquaintances the most nutritional value: cucumbers, peppers, beans, tomatoes? If you guessed tomatoes, you are right on.
SUN CITY – How would you like to be the President of your own wholesale business and work out of your home Monday through Friday? Meet Neighborhood 2 resident Diane Bell (Gustafson), an Independent Sales Representative carrying ten different lines of wholesale materials.
Betty Barnett (N. 22) always wanted a dog, but the residences and condos she lived in had a policy of NO PETS. On the very day she retired, she found herself at an animal shelter just to take a look and came home with Princess. That was five years ago, and she has been a volunteer for the Anderson Animal Shelter in South Elgin ever since.
Q: I decided to get a cell phone. My friends tell me to enter my emergency information in the phone and to label it ICE. What exactly is ICE?
Soldier Field’s Old Sod – Does the Chicago Park District have a cushy contract with the Soldier Field sod maintenance workers? I can’t think of any other reason why the park district insists on grass instead of field turf. They spent multi-millions in the 90s refurbishing Soldier Field, but refused to spend $1 million more for artificial turf. That makes no sense. They should stop listening to John Madden (who favors sod just because he likes dirty uniforms). The players want it and need it. Canceling a fan-based event for sod reasons recently was appalling. Come on, Bears, get yourself into the 21st century.
My wife is always good for a “moment” or two. For this column, she was forthcoming with a daily double. Recently, she put the correct attachment onto the vacuum hose, starting pushing it around on the floor, and realized she forgot to turn the vacuum on.
If your air conditioner was not keeping your house cool during the recent heat wave or if your summer electric bills are higher than your neighbors’, your problem might be an overcharged air conditioner—one that has too much refrigerant.

The Social Security Administration maintains a Death Master File, which contains the Social Security numbers, names, birth dates, death dates, zip codes and last-known residences of more than 87 million deceased Americans. A recent headline in CNN Money reported that “Social Security wrongly declares 14,000 people dead each year.” Approximately one in every 200 deaths are incorrectly recorded in the Death Master Files of the Social Security Administration.
Highly successful swim performances were given by the eight Stingray tankers who attended this year’s Six County Senior Olympics Swim Meet.
Sun City’s Bocce Club is one of, if not, the biggest Charter Club of all. The 700-member Bocce Ball group is planning its post-league tournament on August 30, and it should be one of the biggest competitive events of the year. Get there early if you want a good parking space. If it rains, the event will be held on August 31.
This week, we took a drive to try out the Chinese cuisine at the Gourmet House in Algonquin. We were joined by our friends and block neighbors, Doug and Dorothy. The restaurant is open, well lit, lightly decorated with modern touches, and the tables set and covered with white paper to maintain easy clean up.

Q: What is a Model Report, and where can I find it?
A well-worn one dollar bill and a similarly distressed twenty dollar bill arrived at a Federal Reserve Bank to be retired. As they moved along the conveyor belt to be burned, they struck up a conversation. The twenty dollar bill reminisced about its travels all over the country.
As Hampshire Township has released its property assessments, Sun City Property Assessment Council will hold an Assessment Information Expo for Hampshire Township residents in the Game Room at Prairie Lodge on August 27, from 8 a.m. to noon.
Mary Lou Dorgan, a very youthful-looking resident of N. 30, celebrated her 70th birthday on July 31 by jumping out of an airplane at 14,000 feet over the Mississippi Valley in western Illinois. It wasn’t a dare or a bet or a “something-to-prove,” daredevil act. This was simply a fun way to celebrate a birthday, like you or I might decide to invite a few friends over for cake and ice cream on birthday number whatever.
My wife and I were huge fans of NBC’s hit show Friends. It brought us a lot of laughs the ten years it was on. And chief among those came from arguably the funniest scene in the show’s entire history, in which Ross enlisted friends Rachel and Chandler to help him move a new sofa up his New York apartment building’s stairwell. A quick synopsis: the couch was too long for the tight curves of the stairwell, which resulted in numerous failed strategies, and Ross repeatedly commanded his friends to “Pivot, pi-vot, PIV-OT!”

PH-check! Total Alkalinity-check! Chlorine Level-check! Filter pressure-check! Temperature-well, almost check! Looks like Sun City’s computer- and manually-assisted swimming pools are doing just fine on these hot days of summer. When “water relief” is an oft discussed subject, a sultry, warm Sunday might bring as many as 160 people to cool off in Meadowview’s pool alone. That, of course, does not include Prairie Lodge’s indoor and outdoor pools or Sun City’s two spas.
Has the heat got you feeling the blues? Well, prepare to turn that frown upside down, and mark your calendars. At 7 p.m. on September 8 in Drendel Ballroom, prepare to have your funny bone strummed and your ears tickled by the Doug Gabriel & Family show. Doug Gabriel has won Male Vocalist of the Year seven times, and his show was awarded Branson Missouri’s best morning show six years in a row.
