Geezer Moments: December 2, 2010

Softball buddy Jimmy Hayes starts this week’s column with this “moment”: My wife and I are watching the Late Show last week, and I find a piece of paper with several names on it. I don’t recognize any of them. I ask her who these people are. She says, “They are people that I voted for.” I said, “Oh, you mean obscure judges on the ballot?” She says, “Oh, no, they are people on “Dancing with the Stars.”

No strings attached

Huntley High School students and Sun City residents have been creating exquisite music together for the past 3 years. Residents such as Sam Geati of N.33, who is a member of a men’s tap-dance group called “The Hunks,” the Tall Oaks Tennis Club, the “Travelers” softball team, the 51-piece Concert Band, the 18-piece Jazz Ensemble titled “Lets Dance,” and his own trio, “Blue Skies,” has been working with the students at Huntley High School for the past year.

One hundred voices talking all at once makes cacophony. But 100 voices all singing in harmony makes the 2010 Prairie Singers Christmas concert.

Moving ‘fjord-ward’

This past August, Nick and Joanie Koplos of Neighborhood 32B enjoyed a wonderful 16-day trip to France, England, and the Norwegian Fjords, located on the SW coast of Norway. While their experiences in France and England were strong in historic encounters, Norway provided the Sun City couple with daring physical challenges.

Affairs of the Art

If you are looking to add some pizzazz into your day or even your home, the biannual Affair of the Arts art show offers entertainment, beauty, and fellowship in a wooded setting at The Shores of Turtle Creek in Spring Grove on Sunday, November 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Back home again

John Denver once wrote, with help from Placido Domingo, in his song, “Perhaps Love,” “Perhaps love is like a resting place, A shelter from the storm, It exists to give you comfort, It is there to keep you warm, And in those times of trouble, When you are most alone, The memory of love will bring you home.” This sentiment will spread across Sun City on Saturday, November 20 during the John Denver Tribute Performance at 7 p.m. in Drendel Ballroom.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month

Nearly 24 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes, and 57 million more Americans have prediabetes and are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. November is National Diabetes Awareness month, a time when the American Diabetes Association spreads awareness about the disease and the seriousness of its complications.

Pulte to vacate Prairie Lodge

Pulte Group’s slow-moving build-out efforts are becoming a very big deal to a lot of people at Sun City, and a lot of it has nothing to do with selling home sites.

Sun City veterans take Honor Flight to DC

Joe (Julius) Biro (88) and John Kligis (90). Along with their “guardians,” they were taken by a beautiful McHenry County Veterans Assistance Group to Milwaukee to fly out on Southwest Airlines to Baltimore on Friday, Oct. 1. They were met in Baltimore and transported to the Hilton Hotel and treated to a wonderful dinner Friday night and given Honor Flight t-shirts.

Call to arms

For almost 200 years, Huntley has never failed to live up to the words of John F. Kennedy: “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” Since the War of 1812, dozens upon dozens of Huntley residents responded to this nation’s call to arms, defending our freedom and the freedom of others in every conflict since almost 50 years before Huntley’s official founding in 1851.

Many of our friends who are not Sun City residents continue to send their “moments” to me. Here’s one from former neighbors now living in Las Vegas, so this one gets the award for coming the farthest.
