Ask the Woodchucks, Tip 2: Clothes Dryer

In the last issue, we warned about the hazards of the hoses on your washing machine. We told you to replace those old rubber hoses with metal and to be sure you turn off the water after every use. In this issue, we will discuss the other half of the laundry appliances, the dryer.

Q: As assessment notices are being sent at this time of year, how can a resident obtain a copy of their official township assessment card showing the data upon which the assessment is based?

An amazing tale of “Amazing Grace”

You might think that being lashed to a ship’s mast during a raging hurricane wouldn’t be the most productive work environment, but it was just such a moment that provided the inspiration for “Amazing Grace,” one of the most recognizable songs in the English-speaking world.

Tax Planning Tips, Part 2: Deductions for Charitable Contributions

It’s that time of year in our household when we clean out the closets and identify those clothes that don’t fit anymore.

Covered in goodwill

Every person, be it a child or adult, is entitled to certain things in their life. America is the nation where you are promised “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Many of us have what we need to be happy. But others have come upon hard times and have little—little money, food, shelter, or clothing.

A mile in someone else’s shoes

There are numerous reasons why people walk: for exercise, to relax, for transportation (the most basic of reasons, of course), or, at 8 a.m. Saturday, September 25, at St. Catherine of Sienna in West Dundee, people will walk for the poor.

Smooth sailing for Stingrays at swim meet

Eight members of Sun City’s Stingrays’ Swim Club annihilated their competition at this summer’s Park Ridge Six County Senior Olympics held on July 22. A total of 27 medals, 10 gold, 13 silver, and 4 bronze, were earned by the Stingrays present. All competition is judged in five-year age increments.

Rising to the occasion

Lesley Cowles believes in creditability, reliability, and good customer service. With this formula, her home-based business, The Balloon Cottage, has gone “sky high” in sales. It’s a business that she considers an unexpected gift.

School days

It’s that time of year again. Kids everywhere are heading back to school, toting a backpack full of fresh supplies. With McHenry County College’s RAP Program, so are many adults 50 and older. Only with MCC’s RAP Program, it is with the ease of a no-pressure, test-free atmosphere, where adults 55 and older may “Rediscover the joy of learning through active participation with like-minded peers.”

A change from the heart

Phyllis and Dan Witt of N. 22 are extremely proud of their grandson, Erik Franzen. Erik, who is 28 years old, received his Bachelors Degree in both Journalism and Spanish while attended Carthage College in Wisconsin and received a Master’s Degree in Social Work at Aurora University in Il. What makes Erik unique, though, is that his education and passion for helping people have been stepping stones for what he is about to embark on for the next 27 months.

SunCPAC Q&A: August 26, 2010

Q: Why does SunCPAC provide links to the township and county assessor’s website for my property in its online Model Report at www.suncpac.org?

What healthcare reform means for you

On May 25, Associate State Director of Communications for AARP Illinois visited Sun City as a presenter of a healthcare forum, in which audience members came to learn how the new healthcare bill will affect them. To accommodate all the questions in the allotted amount of time, audience members were asked to write down their questions to be answered by AARP at a later date. Below are some of questions and answers that were unable to be answered by Heppner at the time of the forum.

Who is the best guitarist of all time?

If you’re looking to start a fight, go to any gathering of guitar music fans and ask the question, “Who is the best guitar player of all time?”

How to change your kitchen faucet in 44 easy steps

Step 1: Finally make time to change the faucet (a few hours should do it).

Geezer Moments: August 26, 2010

I’ll start off this week’s column with one from our house. We own two vehicles, a minivan and a small, sporty vehicle. When parking them in our garage, the minivan goes only on one side because the other side has a movable storage platform that fits perfectly in the space above the small car.

Laughter by Paul: August 26, 2010

A clergyman was walking down a country lane when he saw a young farmer struggling to load hay back onto a cart after it had fallen off. “You look hot, my son,” said the minister. “Why don’t you rest a minute, and then I’ll give you a hand.”

Tax Planning Tips, Part 1: What to do if you get a notice from a taxing authority

I often hear comments from friends that one of their greatest fears is getting a notice from the IRS or Illinois Department of Revenue. They fear that they will owe penalties, interest, or go to jail. Some of them fear tax notices more than motor vehicle tickets!

Ask the Woodchucks: Washing Machines

Today’s tip is one that could save you tens of thousands of dollars, and many people are not aware of this potential hazard. It involves your washing machine.

162 fish and countless smiles

Seventy-five kids, 145 bluegills, 9 bass, 1 crappie, 2 bullheads, 5 catfish, and a whole bunch of moms, dads, and grandparents add up to the annual cross-club Grandma Grandpa & Me and Anglers Fishing Derby at Wildflower Lake.

Knock on wood, not likely

There’s a growing unrest in me about the poor quality of commercial goods these days, specifically home furnishings. I grew up with a mother who had a bend for antique furniture and a father who is a woodworker, so perhaps I’ve been spoiled by things made of wood. What I consider “real” furniture.

Music and milestones

Harriette Blake has sung, entertained, and shared a stage with some of the world’s biggest names, and now she lives and shares her golden voice right here in Sun City. Sun Citians are glad that when she retired from a professional singing career a few years ago, she chose to come back “home” to the Chicago area and keep on singing.

Manicures, pedicures, house calls, Berger does it all

Let’s say you just received an invitation to a luncheon with the ladies, and with all the rain feeding your outdoor plants for the past week, you’ve spent the last few days weeding, and your nails are a fright? Who do you call?

Put the pedal to the pavement

Did you know that about 70 Sun City residents are bikers? They ride loose on the prairie several days a week. A significant number are women. They don’t ride motorcycles, they ride bikes.

Family’s steady beat supports young musician

Kyle Zerna thought it would be a fun idea to submit his audition tape to the New York Philharmonic. The 23-year-old percussionist knew they did not seriously consider applicants with no experience in professional orchestras.

The forgotten healthcare benefits for Vets

For many years, I believed that the healthcare benefits offered to U.S. veterans were limited to those who made the military a career and completed 20+ years with a branch of military service. In a casual conversation one day, I learned that a friend was getting his medications at a very low cost from the VA Healthcare system.

Geezer Moments: August 12, 2010

Hey, fellow geezers, your emails and notes sent to me for this column get funnier each week. Here’s this week’s first gem, sent by good friends Linda and Steve.
