In the Board Candidate Package, under responsibilities, it states “Be alert to community concerns that can be addressed by Association objectives and programs.” A petition with over 500 signatures was submitted, asking the board to address a concern.
“The undersigned members hereby petition the board of directors to add to the next board meeting the following agenda item: ‘The appointment of a committee of experienced residents in design, architecture, and the law to review and update the DESIGN GUIDELINES SUN CITY HUNTLEY as amended and restated October – 2022 that this notice be sent to the membership in accordance with Sun City rules and bylaws.’”
The Sun City Concert Band will be rocking the oldies, bringing back memories of music from the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s, at their concert ‘Rock the Ages’ on August 29, at 7 p.m. in Drendel Hall.
Richard Chay, Sun City Concert Band President said, “If you liked Rock the Ages last year, you’ll love it this year because we’ve added popular songs with vocals, like ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ and ‘Proud Mary.’”

Sharing recipes is a connection people have had throughout time across the world. Recipes from family, friends, and community can leave behind some history. There is a sense of warmth in looking at a cookbook filled with recipes in the handwriting of your mother, friend, or neighbor. In Sun City, one neighborhood published their residents’ favorite recipes in the ‘Sun City Huntley Neighborhood 3 Cookbook.’ Sandy Smith coordinated the effort.

The headline came to my phone while I was at work: “Pee-Wee Herman Actor Paul Reubens Dead at Age 70.” My heart sank. I waited for the world around me to take a collective moment to remember Paul Reubens. But in the office, phones kept ringing and computer keyboards kept clacking. My younger coworkers may not even know who Paul Reubens is. Was. But I knew.
The Sun City Board meeting took place on July 26 with several key highlights.
Every Friday after a taxing, strenuous round of bocce ball, a few of us seasoned athletes get together and go out for lunch. After playing three challenging games and being physically and emotionally drained from either the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat, we really needed to load up with a lot of food. One of our friends suggested we try a new restaurant that offers huge portions to match our huge appetites. We all jumped in our cars and made our way over to Randall Road to check out Sweet Basil Café in Algonquin.

Living far away from my parents has made it challenging for me to be actively involved in their day-to-day lives. I struggle with guilt knowing they are all alone. Bob Taylor, a Sun City resident, has been doing vocal performances for over 25 years and has an impressive repertoire that spans music from to 30s to the 80s. His love of music began in his childhood. Taylor said, “I was born into music. My father had a record collection. My mother played the organ. As a toddler, I would watch her work her magic playing the keyboard and pedals. And my grandfather had a huge stereo system and I would sit on his lap and listen to his favorites like Perry Como.”

I am a 72-year-old woman who is becoming increasingly concerned about my memory. I have a family history of dementia and I can’t help but worry about some of the changes I’ve been experiencing lately.
Every once in a while, the food gods smile down on the Dining Duo. Such was the case at our last neighborhood Christmas party where we won a $65 gift card to a local restaurant. We checked the menu prices online, and after seven short months, we finally saved up enough additional money to use our gift card. We put on our Sunday best, and headed off to Montarra Grill in Algonquin.
Two months down for the summer and we are finally getting some real blockbusters. As I write this, the actors guild SAG-AFTRA is on strike. Halting any future film plans, next year may not fare better than this one. A lot of crashing and burning has been going on. Low returns and attendance have CEOs scrambling. A warning was already on its way before the pandemic that a sea change was coming. Streaming can host more content than multiplexes can ever match. If the theatrical experience has any hope of thriving, it needs to bend to the will of the public and make some drastic changes. Let’s look at two such examples recently.

A few notes. Janie and I grew up on the same street and graduated in the same high school class so you could say we’ve been lifelong friends. She had fallen on ice recently and I mentioned that I had purchased a product, YakTrax, for my wife who had also fallen. On June 19, family and friends gathered at Shepherd of the Prairie Church in Huntley to honor the veterans who served our country by presenting them with a custom quilt. Each stitch on the quilts is a labor of love completed by the women in The Quilts of Valor to show appreciation and gratitude to veterans serving the United States of America.

Young at Heart is a rescue and safe haven for senior dogs and cats in Woodstock, Illinois. “I’ve been there 8 months,” Smith said. “I’ve worked at animal shelters since I was 20.” According to Smith, volunteering is a true passion.

D., has found a way to incorporate self-help into the entertainment of fictional characters. Johns, a Sun City resident, is the founder and director of The Monarch Center for Women’s Leadership Development. She is a retired university professor and has authored textbooks in health care and leadership. What gave her the idea to start writing fiction?

For close to a quarter-century, the McHenry County Antique Farm Equipment Association of Illinois (MCAFQI)has been a gathering place for all who cherish generations-old tractors. Some of the tractors were on display at a recent Huntley Farmers Market. Membership chairman Jim Jones of Union described the purpose of the 100-member club. “We go to area fairs, as we were just at Harvard Milk Days, have tractor treks to places like Lake Geneva, Wis. and work with FFA Alumni and McHenry County Farm Bureau.”
