Perfection only makes oddity more appealing

I was eating Pringles the other day for the first time in a thousand years, and I wondered: “How do they get them all to look like this, each of them perfectly nestled, each with the gentle swoop of a Panama hat brim without the crown?”

I have no idea why that can of Pringles ended up on my snack tray, because I never eat junk like that. I’m more of a health-food nut — Fritos or Cheetos. Never Pringles.

Theatre Company plans CARavan Food Pantry donation drive

Due to the pandemic and stay at home rules, The Theatre Company of Sun City cancelled our Spring production of Beauty and the Beast. The Theatre Company for years has donated the proceeds from the candy and water sales during our productions to the area Food Pantries. In order to make up for the loss of donations during this trying time, The Theatre Company is planning a CARavan of Donations.

Finding comfort in entertainment nostalgia

So if you are anything like me, this has not been the easiest of times in terms of entertainment. A filmgoer like myself wants that larger than life experience that the theater offers. However, due to the threat that shall not be named, we are in this situation. But to paraphrase Jane Austen, we are always in the pursuit of a new film or show to watch. And the home theatre will have to do.

Quarantine bingo: Being inside, not going out

The doors to apartment units in the hallways are open and only a few feet inside are residents playing bingo. Hallway BINGO has become one of the more popular activities at Heritage Woods and White Oaks at Huntley. The irony of hallway BINGO as an activity at assisted living facilities is BINGO’S popularity usually brings residents together because of its ease of playing and odds of winning.

Ready or knot, here they come

For Linda Campbell and her husband, staying active outdoors was just another part of their daily routine, and they regularly joined others in Neighborhood 18 who also enjoyed going on walks and runs. In light of the recent coronavirus pandemic however, mandatory stay-at-home orders and social distancing seem to pose obstacles in the way of those wanting to maintain their physical health.

Hoping to preserve as much normalcy as possible, Campbell stumbled onto a creative way to continue to stay active with other neighbors while following social distancing protocols.

Sun Day celebrates its 10th anniversary!

This edition marks the Sun Day’s 10th anniversary, and every time I’ve attempted to start writing this piece in my head (which I’ve been doing in one way or another for months but only running into roadblocks these past few weeks), I keep circling back to the phrase “it’s a bitter-sweet celebration.”

Thinking outside the box

In response to the stay-at-home order issued for the state of Illinois until April 30, clubs in Sun City were forced to make the difficult decision to suspend activities for the time being. For some residents, this sudden loss of meaningful social interactions may have the potential to lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation which could affect one’s physical health and mental well-being.

With age, it seems, comes self-awareness. We become aware of our strengths as well as our weaknesses. Our likes become more apparent as well as our dislikes. Our ability to verbalize what we need to feel comfortable, even happy, may also grow with time. Control. I have come to realize for me to feel comfortable, it often boils down to control. A calendar that is filled with professional and personal obligations make me happy.

I am a very concerned daughter who is worried about her mother. My mom, 68 years, has been on self-quarantine since COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic. I unfortunately live states away. My sister lives nearby, but because she continues to work in the hospital setting, she has chosen not to visit our mother during this crisis. My mom is used to spending a lot of time with my sister and her family throughout the week. She feels cut off and isolated.

Huntley’s response to Coronavirus pandemic

As news about the coronavirus becomes widespread, it can be easy to become lost in the sea of information which in turn may lead some to panic. In these times of crisis, Huntley Chief of Police, Robert Porter, ensures that Huntley is taking a “common sense but prepared approach,” in an effort to keep local residents informed and safe.

An important note about our local businesses

While the present threat to our health and well-being is serious and needs to be taken with the utmost care, caution, and regard, our entire economic system is under the greatest strain any of us have seen in our lifetimes, which poses a very serious threat in itself to us all. Just like we need to heed our orders of quarantine and social distancing, we all need to do what we can to keep our economy safe and healthy, too.

Positivity in the time of pandemic

A few days ago, on one of the first days of social distancing, I saw a quote on Instagram that read, “When the Great Plague of London was going around in 1665, Cambridge University shut down and Isaac Newton was forced to stay home. During this time, he invented calculus, parts of optic theory and allegedly, while sitting in his garden, he saw an apple fall from a tree that inspired his understanding of gravity and the laws of motion.”

I liked the positivity and energy of that thought (no pressure intended – we aren’t all going to win Nobel Prizes for what we do in this quarantined time. And that’s okay).

Have you ever seen a cat go after a laser dot? That’s news media across the world right now. Coronavirus is the dot and news media is the cat, and everywhere the dot pops up, they pounce. Don’t laugh too hard because this is us, too. Only when applied to us, the news is the dot and we’re the cats, and in our crazed efforts to “catch the dot,” we’re knocking over tables and chairs and pulling down curtains and breaking our mother’s good China and relieving grocery stores of their inventories.
