MY SUN DAY NEWS
We went shopping for furniture at Penny Mustard, where we found out that “Penny” has no reference to the price by any stretch of the imagination. We were looking for two movie theater recliners, and they had to pass Nancy’s rigorous inspection. After two hours of being folded up like a taco, laid out like a flatbread, and ejected like an F-16 fighter pilot, she had her workout for the day, and so did my wallet. We were both getting “hangry.”
Quoting from the February 11 edition of the Chicago Tribune, “Hollywood’s 2019 has gotten off to such a bad beginning that the movie’s tagline of ‘Everything is not awesome’ is looking more like accurate industry analysis.” I WONDER WHY?
I have a love/hate relationship with my Fitbit. As an activity tracker, it measures the number of steps I take, my heart rate and even my sleep habits. I love it because it was a Christmas gift from my children. The fact that they all pooled their well-earned money to choose a gift that I wanted means so much to me. It isn’t quite the gift that I had hoped it would be though.
I just saw your answer in the Sun Day to my question. You avoided the question, or possibly you did not understand…The question is: What is the purpose or function of expansion tank? Simple question?
When I visit my parents, I have noticed that we often have nothing to talk about. Conversations center on the weather or food. After each visit, I leave their company feeling empty. I don’t know how to generate a meaningful discussion with them. Is this common and how can I make a change so our visits are meaningful?
Dick Hattan, war veteran, has documented it all. “I think about it every day. Everyone reflects on their war experience. No one forgets the details. I was in the army for only 17 months, but I think about it every day. For 11 months, I felt threatened every day,” he said.

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” So asked Mary Oliver, one of the greatest and most prolific modern poets of the twenty-first century.

Despite all the topics that divide us into warring tribes — border walls, Russian hijinks, gun control — it’s nice to know that two recent studies have settled one long-standing argument once and for all: Dogs are better than cats.

After months of planning and community and board meetings at the Huntley Area Public Library District, it is now official – the Library District is going out to the voters this spring to fund an expansion project.
Calling all Del Webb residents with a passion for reading and children! Several of the District 158 Schools will be hosting Battle of the Books during March, April, and May, and many community volunteers are needed.
In Mary Ann Weissmann’s opinion, many people want to write a story of some kind, but they’re afraid to start, or they aren’t sure where to begin. It’s the exact reason why the writer’s group, Write On, was founded in Sun City back in 2003.

Did you know that some 40% of American citizens over the age of 50 still use aspirins for their primary or secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease? These older seniors began this aspirin regimen in the 1980s with the strong emergence, at that time, of potential heart benefits for the medicine’s use.
If you live within a two to three mile radius of my house, there is a 99.9% chance you know Laurel and Hardy. Outside our borders the percentage drops precipitously. Case in point, the young lady at the refreshment stand asked me what movie I was going to see, I replied Stan and Ollie. She got a slightly glassy look in her eyes and asked “what’s that”?
The path that my son Christopher is traversing while determining which college to attend has been long and arduous. What started as fun Saturday afternoon strolls around picturesque campuses quickly became spending hours sitting in front of a computer writing essays, ordering test scores, and hitting the submit button while silently praying that he had done enough to receive the prized ‘You’ve been accepted’ email.
At the January 23 meeting of Sun City members and the first 2019 quarterly meeting of the Board of Directors, a major harvest of information took place.
We are working 24/7, day and night, through rain, sleet, snow, and arthritis, to find new restaurants for our loyal readers. There is no rest for restaurant critics!
My father’s dementia is progressing, and he has gone from being a mild and loving man to one that is mean and obstinate. I don’t know how to deal with his outbursts. I’ve spoken to his doctor, but I didn’t get much help from him. How do I deal with him lovingly, rather than play into his mean spirit?
I remember reading in your column about replacing the switch that controls the front porch and garage lights that includes the flashing in case of emergency. Can you tell me what to get for a replacement for this switch?
In 2014, when the Sun Day published its initial history of Sun City, an important part of the story was inadvertently left out. This is an unusual Chapter two, going backwards a long time before Del Webb came to Illinois. It’s about the beginning of Del Webb’s first active adult community outside of the Sun Belt. And it’s about a determined, persistent woman from Schaumburg who played a special role in it.
For anyone who’s read my columns since the paper’s inception, you’ll know that I’m not partial to New Year’s resolutions, and I don’t subscribe to them. Resolutions, yes. Just not at the turn of the year, because I think that “fresh start” mentality is shaky ground to build your motivation on. However, that does not mean that folly doesn’t occur any time someone decides to make a change.
My ceiling fan is haunted. I know, you might not believe in ghosts. I didn’t either, until an old Buick I once owned decided to lock and unlock its doors every now and then throughout the night. The garage was right beneath my bedroom, so I could hear it every time it happened.

Dennis O’Leary has served Sun City in so many ways for the last decade, he can’t exactly remember all the details. After he was re-elected President of the Sun City Community Board of Directors for the fourth consecutive year on January 9, he was asked if he is the longest-serving Board president ever. He had to stop and think about it. The short answer is yes, he is.

MCRide, the county’s dial-a-ride service, will ring in the new year with the addition of Sunday rides and an increased service area. Starting January 1, riders will be able to use MCRide from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The service area also will expand to include Fox River Grove, as well as three new destinations.
New businesses are coming into Huntley constantly, and the last few months were no exception. Major news coming out of the village’s economic development department last week revealed that the former Chevrolet auto dealership on south Route 47 next to General RV is being replaced. Coming soon is the More Brewing Company, with a restaurant, brewery, and taproom.

If you have never played bingo here in Sun City, then you will have to wait in line. Linda Bahwell, who works at the registration desk, catches all of the action. “It’s a lot of fun. These ladies get here before we do! Our community donates some great prizes and it’s a great social occasion,” she said.

The holidays are over, and we’re still trying to pay our bills and make amends to all the relatives we offended. It’s freezing cold outside, and there’s not much to do but hunker down and wait for the inevitable spring thaw. Imagine how excited I was when Jim said he wanted to go to Antigua!

I am often asked how we know how to repair so many different things. We have all been fixing things for 40-60 years, so we have a lot of experience, but the internet has added substantially to our competence.

I need to slow down. I am a caregiver to both my parents and I am burning the candle at both ends. I need a little motivation to help me. I do give myself permission to take a break, but I get right back into a frantic pace. Help!
