MY SUN DAY NEWS
As the houses in Sun City get older, and lubricant on door hinges dries up, they start to squeak.
In less than 7 days I will hug my daughter, Mary, for the first time in 4 months. She has spent the last semester studying abroad in London. Over the course of those four long months, she has stood in awe among the rocks at Stonehenge, explored the Catacombs in Paris, eaten octopus from the city market in Barcelona, and walked along the shores of Sardinia, Italy.
Before I moved to Del Webb, I attempted to get rid of a lot of “stuff.” Once I somewhat settled in here, I found I still have so much to get rid. I don’t know where to begin or how to put things in order. I feel overwhelmed. How do people do it?
We received a very interesting letter, from a very interesting person, about a very interesting restaurant. The letter was from Pierre Pollin. If his name does not sound familiar, allow us to enlighten you.
There was a palpable excitement during the entire opening day game for the Coyotes as they took on the Monarchs. “Yea Poppa! Yea Poppa!” screamed little Chelsea Kick, cheering on her Grandfather Chuck Martin. Her cheering might have been a catalyst for Martin, as he was 5 for 5 in the nine-inning game; two of those hits were home runs in the 5th and 7th inning.

The headline reads simply – “Huntley: If we’re next, we’re ready.” It sits starkly above an editorial in the March issue of “The Voice,” a student-produced publication at Huntley High School. The editorial is not about an upcoming athletic contest, or next week’s science fair.

I’m not quite sure when or why I become one of those people. You know, the ones you see at summer parties holding a colorful can of water, like a prop, a necessary part of their personal ensemble. Sparkling water isn’t a drink, it’s a lifestyle, they might say.
The license plate holder is back on my car, framing the plate with a message to tell the world everything they need to know about me. Not that it’s necessary. Facebook and the Russians already know.

Around Sun City’s lodges, we see the beautiful art of creating: painting, sculptures of ceramic and clay, and even glass are a part of the wide range of media that artists use – but what about toothpicks? Cesar Vega, a Peruvian-American resident of Sun City, uses the skills of an architect and the vision of an artist, to create intricate toothpick replicas.

You cannot help but shudder when you hear the “C” word. Everyone reacts differently to hearing the news, and friends are sometimes at loss for words. “We are here to raise funds to get rid of this terrible disease,” said Deb Oaks, a Relay For Life coordinator for an event in Huntley Park on June 9. “Our goal is $48,000 this year.”

Greeting cards, it seems, are becoming passé in an era of texts, Facebook birthday posts, and tweets. Lisa Burton Bradford still believes in sending those cards in the mail, but she designs and makes them herself. “I have been stamping since 1990. There are no mistakes when you make your own cards. They are all unique and you can always fix what you don’t like,” she said.

What do Behavior Bear, Do’er Duck, Friendship Frog, Healthy Hippo, Manners Monkey, Respectful Rabbit, Responsible Rabbit, Self-Esteem Elephant, and Warm-Hearted Walrus have in common? They are the embodiment of the nine traits all children should strive for, according to Characters with Character: good behavior, perseverance, friendship, healthy habits, manners, respect, responsibility, self-esteem, and kindness. Through stories, art projects, hands-on activities and even live costumed characters, these traits are introduced and reinforced and talked about in an interactive and meaningful way through this nonprofit organization.
We all enjoy sun-lit rooms, don’t we? We build them in our homes, and in hospitals, therapy centers, and recreational centers. They help us grow plants and flowers indoors, and provide attractive spaces for family and group activities. About 18 years ago, Del Webb built a very nice solarium (literally translated as sun room) in Sun City’s Prairie Lodge. It had a glass ceiling, and large glass windows on three sides. It was designed as a social, eating, and meeting space for community groups and family parties and events. It also was frequently used as a small staging area for entertainment events in Drendel Ballroom.

Saturday, May 12, marks the 26th anniversary of one of America’s great days of giving — the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food drive.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasing in large numbers throughout the world, especially in Western higher developed countries. Affecting an estimated 30 to 40 percent of the U.S. population, it is the most common form of chronic liver disease in our country.
When my children were young, I spent a lot of time in our guest bathroom. Whether it was potty training, helping to wash hands, or helping to make sure everything was tucked in and buttoned up, I spent an inordinate amount of time in that little room. In an effort to maintain my sanity while caring for not only my own children, but also nieces, nephews and neighbor’s kids, I promised myself that when the days of caring for little ones had passed, I was going to scrub grout between the bright pink tiles that covered the floor.
When my husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, I clearly noticed how differently his friends stopped engaging with him. It was very sad to watch. Can you address how it is important to maintain friendships even when it may seem challenging?
Their trip began in Barcelona (part 1 of their story), after which they traveled to Madrid then on to Granada. After spending time in Granada, Grant and Linda (N-24)left for the southern coast of Spain. One benefit of taking a touring vacation rather than do it “on-your-on” are the side benefits that can take place.
I never read anyone else’s reviews about the movie I am going to see, lest I be tempted to plagiarize or form opinions ahead of time. I do, however, see the headlines and brief outtakes from others who have seen the film, many on twitter etc. “I have never left a film this awestruck,” was one comment, “legendary” was another, and “jaw dropping” another.
Two ladies (Diane and Carol) in our neighborhood came up with an ingenious idea to bring the neighborhood closer together. Their idea was to form a supper club. Every few months, Neighborhood 35 would pick a new target and descend upon the restaurant. The inaugural event was held at Port Edward Restaurant in Algonquin.
We are busy with our spring cleaning lists at this time of the year. Winter windows turn into sparkling majesties as they are cleaned to let in bright rays of sunshine. Don’t forget to include your grand and mighty task of organizing on your spring cleaning to do list.
Letters for the week of May 3.
This article contains a partial record of discussions at the Current Events Club on April 17. Its objective is to encourage attendance at meetings, which occur every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in Drendel Ballroom.
The sights and sounds of the Wild West come to Huntley when the Sun City Theater troupe performs Annie Get Your Gun, the light-hearted musical with music and lyrics by Irving Berlin. The story is a fictionalized account of the life of Annie Oakley, a sharpshooter who starred in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, and her on-again off-again romance with sharpshooter Frank Butler.

A couple weeks ago, Sun Day Advertising Representative Kurt Kuehnert and I sat on a panel of local media members at an event for non-profit organizations to ask questions on how to better communicate with media outlets in hopes of gaining more exposure. Given the event’s success, I thought it might be beneficial to address some of the topics with our readers in hopes to provide you with a better understanding of how we choose our editorial content, therefore allowing you increase your chances of having your material published in the Sun Day.

In early February, my wife sat in her wheelchair with a pile of gardening catalogs spread out on the coffee table in front of her. It was time to start planning her springtime plantings — which meant I would spend the better part of this day filling out order forms or calling 1-800 phone numbers to places like Breck’s, Heronswood Gardens, Burpee, Jung Seeds, Bluestone, Jackson & Perkins, SpringHill Nurseries. I could feel the Master Card heat up from anticipation.

Rutland Township government continues to function on controversy and divisive behavior, instead of teamwork and unity. The years 2016 and 2017 brought controversies about the handling of nominating petitions and an attempt to knock a long-time incumbent leader off the ballot in last year’s election. Last week, another dustup erupted, involving an alleged failure to process property tax assessments in a timely fashion and/or according to state law.

There is nothing more rewarding than seeing students’ faces light up when they see their grandparents come to their classroom. “One of our first Grandparents’ Days was with our granddaughter, Amanda, in 2004. We came right from O’Hare from a trip. We went straight to the classroom,” Donna Newbanks, Sun City Resident remembers.

What kind of community is Huntley on a Saturday night? What do suburban cops actually do? What kind of shifts do they work? What do they think of cop shows on TV? Do they mind if people call them cops? The Sun Day got some answers to these questions on March 17 when this writer spent four hours riding along with a Huntley officer.

Most people are unaware of the range of critical functions performed by the all-important body’s organ, the liver. Unfortunately, liver disease today is increasing due to alcohol use, obesity, viruses, and a range of other factors. In fact, approximately 5.5 million Americans now have chronic liver disease known as severe liver scarring or cirrhosis (alcoholic and non-alcoholic/fatty livers).
