We all know him; he’s a household name and perhaps the greatest entertainer of the 20th century. I’m referring to Frank Sinatra, and on June 29, at 10 a.m. in the Fountain View Center, Hyman Speck will be presenting a PowerPoint show narrating the biography and showcasing the career of “Frank Sinatra, The Life and Loves of America’s Greatest Entertainer.”
When you live in Sun City and can’t always get back to your high school reunion, among the numerous activities that are already offered in the community, you can attend a “Blast from the Past Reunion.”
Have you been thinking about how you are going to set up and adorn your Easter Holiday table? Linda Cogdill’s (N.10A) business, Design One Interiors, Ltd., has been in the Sun City community for the last seven years, and can help you with all kinds of festive ideas. In 1999 Linda received her Associate Degree in Interior Design, and since then she enjoys exercising her creative side, utilizing different accessories to beautify the home, including what she calls “Over the Top Table Tops.”
Yeehaw! If you are the grandchild of a member of the Grandma, Grandpa and Me Club, mark March 25 on your calendar. This will be the second year of the Round up Rodeo that will take place at the Meadow View Lodge from 1-3 p.m.
Are you looking for some unconditional love? Have you thought of adopting a cat? An older cat? The Animal Outreach Society of McHenry County is a foster based, no-kill shelter who has several older cats available for you to select from. They make sure the animals are spayed or neutered and micro-chipped, and for seniors (over 55) the adoption fee is waived.

When they said “Deck the Halls,” Dave Mathis and his wife took the saying very seriously. Dave and his wife live in Neighborhood 11, and it’s unlikely you’d have a problem finding their home. It’s “decked out” in some 7000 LED lights with numerous holiday characters set up all over the lawns and framing the home.
Remember the quilt that was in the Sew ‘N Sews room? It needed some repair, so one of the ladies in the group, Ellie Sudduth, took it home, cleaned and fixed it up, but with their newly expanded space where the computer club used to be, she felt a new quilt could be in order. The previous one was then donated elsewhere.
On the day after Thanksgiving, you are probably either getting your house back in order, pulling out your Christmas decorations, or getting in on those early-bird specials in the stores. Not Linda and Frank Fenneman (N. 28).
Remember Linus from the Charles Schultz comic “Charlie Brown”? Liss Kundich (N.21) surely does. He was the character who always carried around a blanket for security. Knowing how much a blanket can mean to a child, Project Linus was formed, and today, children in hospitals are the happy recipients of beautiful quilts. Liss was part of the Project Linus chapter in California before she moved to Illinois. She is now active in the Northbrook chapter. From the year 2002 until present day, they have made 6,500 quilts. Project Linus is a not-for-profit group.
Janice Strain, N.20, finds decorating and enhancing birdhouses very relaxing. Janice is retired and has been a resident of Sun City for five years now, after having lived in Algonquin for a short time. “I love my home in Sun City,” she proudly states.
Have you ever seen beautiful art painted on toilet paper? On October 16, at the Prairie Lodge, you’ll be able to see and purchase this fine piece of art along with 91 other exhibitors at this year’s art fair. It’s free and open to the public and begins at 10 a.m. and continues through 4 p.m.
About nine years ago, Sandy Oldham (N. 12) started a dance group that today has grown to 77-80 Sun City residents. They are known as the Hoofers and Hunks and will present their 9th Annual Show at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday, October 2 and 7 p.m. Monday, October 3 in Drendel Ballroom.
“You’re not alone” is a familiar phrase, but to the Breast Cancer Support Group in the Del Webb community, it means a whole lot to several people, both women and men.

Betty Barnett (N. 22) always wanted a dog, but the residences and condos she lived in had a policy of NO PETS. On the very day she retired, she found herself at an animal shelter just to take a look and came home with Princess. That was five years ago, and she has been a volunteer for the Anderson Animal Shelter in South Elgin ever since.
The Sunflower Garden Club this year has chosen the Grafton Food Pantry and NICA (Northern Illinois Center for Autism) for their annual donations. The Grafton Food Pantry was incorporated in 2006 and is run by friends with a passion to help out their community. Their mission is to provide food items and household products to people in need of assistance and seek to improve lives through education on nutrition and smart shopping. Their new Huntley location is on Smith Drive, and they serve about 500 residents from the areas of Huntley, Lakewood, and portions of Lake in the Hills, Crystal Lake, and Algonquin.
If you are a veteran or know of a local combat veteran of any war and would like to remember and honor them in some way, you will have a wonderful opportunity to do so at the Northern Illinois Quilt Fest being held at several locations throughout northern Illinois this summer.

The year 2006 held two milestones for Joyce Zemba, N.3. One, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and two, her first grandchild was born. Many women in her age group had grandchildren in high school or even college and with her diagnosis, Joyce wanted to record her life story for her grandchildren so they would know their grandmother had been a nun.

Meet Joan Souchek, N.3. She’s the one gracefully swimming in the Olympic-sized pool in the lodge here at Sun City. Or you might see her teaching a swim class to her fellow aqua friends practicing for the next meet. Joan and her husband, Paul, have been residents for the past eleven years and, with Joan having always been a swimmer, quickly became involved, starting the “Sting Rays,” the name of the Del Webb community swim team, in 2000.
