Senior service organization Faith in Action of McHenry County (FIAMC) is pleased to host its annual benefit dinner An Evening in Italy on Saturday, April 2. This year’s event has been moved from its traditional January time and also is being held at a new, larger venue D’Andrea Banquets, 4419 US Hwy 14, Crystal Lake.

Who doesn’t like a little “nunsense” in their life now and then? So long as it’s fun, bold, and makes you laugh until you cry, there’s no harm. And in some special cases, it may even be better to make a habit of it.

Have you ever driven in a car when someone suddenly cuts in front of you, and then you or another passenger shouts out to the errant driver, “What’s the matter? Are you blind?” Well, you may want to think again before saying that in the future. It is doubtful that a good blind driver would cut in front of you like that, but there could be a blind driver driving a car.

Judy and I were lucky to be able to escape the Blizzard of ’11 by spending January and February in the place we call Disneyland for Geezers, The Villages, Florida. If you’ve never been there, you don’t know what you are missing. I don’t want to turn this into a commercial, but suffice it to say there are over 70,000 full- and part-time residents of this senior community. Here’s a few of the Geezer Moments that occurred there this year.

Sun City resident SCOREs big as mentor

Sun City resident Philip Grisolia has worked 25 years in the publishing industry. He started out “many years ago” for the Chicago Daily News and then spent a career moving from various publications, all the while collecting experience, which molded him into the mentor he is today with the Fox Valley Chapter of SCORE, where he has the opportunity to help entrepreneurs grow their own successful experiences in today’s business world.

Foxy little devils!

Photos taken in my yard on January 25, 2011. It was late morning when I spotted the fox. Further examination of the picture shows that there were two foxes in the yards between Stonewater Crossing and Big Horn Dr (Sun City’s Neighborhood 15).

You’re Invited: February 24, 2011

February is Library Lovers Month and The Friends Foundation will be celebrating with an artistic new fundraiser – Sprinkling the Love of Reading. Through February 28 twenty-two beautifully decorated watering cans are on exhibit at the library.

Mind matters

Over the past 40 years, Rose Hamann has filled many roles in the Recovery International Discovery Meetings for Mental Health. She began attending the group meetings in Chicago in 1971 as a member, by referral from her doctor, and in the intervening years has been an assistant group leader, volunteer, and for approximately the last 20 years, a group leader, both in Chicago and, for the last five years, in Huntley.

It all started out on February 1, the night of the big blizzard. We have a small group of men that play cards on the first and second day of the month. Well, February 1st was the day, and we responded.

Surf to a new turf

Sometime in late March, Jameson’s Tavern and Grill will open in Sun City’s Prairie Lodge. This will end an “eating out” hiatus that has frustrated Sun Citians since the Walleye Grill closed last fall.

Route 47 Update

Watermain and sanitary work continues on Route 47, as weather permits. The Village has been informed that the contractor will begin installation of the new sanitary lift station on the Southeast corner of Main Street and Route 47 within the next week or two.
